Default Anyone put a silencer or small muffler on their EWG dump?

Just curious if anyone has seen anyone do this.

I dont want to, I love the sound of my EWG. But I was thinking.. (bad things happen when I do this)

If you have someone, who wants an EWG, and doesnt want quite as much of the noise, what would doing say a motorcycle muffler, or a short glass packed type muffler be like. I also know that bends knock sound down, so I also wonder if extending the dump down and venting it out behind the pass side front wheel would knock it down a bit.

For the purpose of this discussion, lets pretend that for whatever reason, routing it back into the turboback is NOT an option.

I've heard of someone doing this (or at least planning on doing this) with a motorcycle muffler, but I don't remember seeing any results/videos.

confused so...

basically, you're trying to decrease in cabin noise as opposed to the noise it makes in general?

He's brainstorming how to make the EWG quieter, period.

I thought that as well, but then he said,

"I also wonder if extending the dump down and venting it out behind the pass side front wheel would knock it down a bit."

doesn't really make it quieter...

Just another way to make it quieter without having to buy a muffler, though I don't know how effective it would be

the effect of the bends in pipe to the volume of the sound has to do with the speed the air leaves the pipe,

more bends, more resistance on air, lower exit velocity

Don't have the video, it's a Tial 44, dump tube points almost straight down and is about 1' long.

I extended the dump tube so that it ends about 10 inches back from the bend in the down pipe. Putting the sound behind you instead of in front of you makes a big difference in the cabin. Outside of the car it will still wake the dead and I have a lot of fun scaring people with it. I also feel it vibrate a little now that it's longer. I tried putting a cheap baffle in it but it didn't quiet it much and it didn't run the same so I took it out.

most bike mufflers are 1.5" - 1.75". i dont know what you guys run, but my dump tube is 2" thats why i got the magnaflow muffler. after searching for a couple weeks, it was the smallest one i could find.

I was just thinking of extending it all the way to the back, then use a twin 3" in (would have to neck the EWG pipe up a bit) 4" out muffler. Obviously it would be a custom axleback to do this. That way you route it through the muffler like you had recirc'd it, but with none of the downsides of plumbing it back in.

But that would knock the sound down the same as plumbing it back in like normal.

Yeah I am not looking to do this on mine. I am just brainstorming out of my own curiosity.

Has anyone seen if flames come out the EWG dump? How badass would it be venting out behind the pass front wheel spewing flames at night Then you can melt your sideskirts AND rear bumper, instead of just the rear bumper.

I was trying to find a picture of an RX-7 that did something along those lines minus the dual in muffler. Maybe someone more skilled at Google will find it. Basically they routed the EWG all the way back and in the rear they had one big exhaust and the smaller EWG one next to it. The bends and length of pipe gave it plenty of time to shed some noise - not sure if they added a resonator or muffler in there as well.

I'm pretty sure the older Porsche 930's used to run muffler's on the EWG right from the factory. May want to hit up some Porsche forum's and see if you can get your hands on one.

u guys r making it way more complicated than it is.

here, just get this valve, weld one side onto the EWG dumptube, cut an opening on the side of ur downpipe and weld the other side of the valve onto the down pipe. now valve will only open when u have boost, and stays shut when out of boost.

The EWG already opens when under boost and stays shut when out of boost. What would this thing accomplish, and how does it have anything to do with the OP?

Found this interesting thread on a Saab forum. The guy never posted the final result but it gives an idea of what others have tried.

This is the link to the thread http://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=11887

Another go at the External Wastegate Muffler...

I had put a muffler inside the dump tube for my EWG setup, but ended up having problems with my wastegate duty cycles. Apparently the muffler was too restrictive. The muffler was meant to slip in a 1.5" tube and you ended up with about a 1" diameter exit.

So I ordered up a new muffler that would fit in to a 2" tube and you end up with about a 1.5" diameter exit. I'll find out soon how much it cuts down on the noise. I had a shop that we send a lot of jobs from work do the welding (for free). I was pretty impressed with welds, but the guy put WAY too much heat in to the flange and ended up warping it. They had to mill it flat because it was so bad.

If this works out pretty well it might be a good alternative for those who don't want to run a straight dump because it's so loud.
Quote:

The first picture doesn't accurately show the clearance, there is probably 3-4 inches. Also, since there is only exhaust exiting through that pipe when the wastegate is open, it doesn't retain much heat. I'll coat the new one with ceramic paint though, just like the old one for good measure

What you are suggesting wouldnt even remotely close to work, as the EWG doesnt come off the downpipe, and has nothing to do with the downpipe. .
