2009 Outback Sport (pics)...
This is the 1st thread I've posted here and 1st Subaru I've personally owned.
My g/f nabbed a new 2007 Forester about a year ago, and I got hooked driving it in the 3rd snowiest Winter Wisconsin has ever seen. Subaru AWD FTW! Had my eye on an OBS, researched the car for almost a year, and held my breath till the 09's came out. I picked it up last Wednesday, it's got just over 200 miles on it. Went w/ an Auto, since I didn't feel like teaching my g/f how to drive stick and I like to drink (it's a Milwaukee thing). I can't stand sleepy-eyed freeway stop-n-go commutes every morning w/ a manual either. Haters can bite me. I surfed the net 5x over looking for info and pics on the 09' OBS's (or even 08' for that matter), but it's sparse. Especially the Silver version. Seems almost everyone copped a Black or Blue one... So here's some pics I took yesterday, showing some of changes for 2009. The cars101.com pics are the only ones I've seen and they're thumbnail size =/ I got the all weather floor mats, AutoArmor interior/exterior protection, iPod interface, rear bumper cover, wheel locks, and splash guards. My SPT exhaust is being delivered tomorrow, I'm still debating which grill to get, and I need to get these windows tinted ASAP. Also ordered personalized plates... OUTLAWD (Outback + AWD) lol Here's a shot of the new rear wheel-well liners, for reduced road noise and weather penetration. Chrome door handles, which ties the rear chrome unibrow w/ the rest of the car much better. 3M Fender kit visible too. New interior console area. Looks more refined IMO than the 08' style. LOL red hazard now too. In the end, the All-Weather Package on the OBS won over the power moonroof of the 2.5i. It is WI afterall. The silver combo is still my favorite color of the OBS's. The bumper underguards, chrome lights/details, and silver interior parts just blend better w/ the two-tone silver paint job IMO. I'd love to see some more 09' OBS pics if anyone else gets one. I'll post more pics myself after the exhaust and tint are done. Thanks for taking a look, and thanks to everyone who posts to this forum, for all the help and discussion that fueled many sleepless nights of research and decision!

I am also looking at getting an OBS and your right about the silver, there are very few pics to be found. Please post more pics as this is probably the only good ones I have seen of the silver.
Do you like the two tone? I have not seen any OBS in person and am not sure if I like it. Also do you like the chrome door handles or would prefer the body color door handles? Thanks! |

The two-tone gives it a more agressive look than a solid body color IMO. I think the Black version makes the car look smaller. That may or may not be your preference... Black and Silver are the only ones w/ dark interiors too. All have Black carpet for 09' tho. I like the chrome door handles vs body colored for the Silver. Probably for the Black too but I have not seen one in person. There is plenty chrome stock that will cost $$$ to mask or replace, so adding the new handles seems to preserve the continuity of the overall look to the front & back. In that respect, I think it's an improvement. If you're thinking of buying an 08' for the body colored door handles, I'd take an 09' for the other refinements instead. I drove test drove an 08' and did notice less road noise in the 09' from the wheel-well treatment. The new center console adds some zing to the average Subaru interior too. I suggest hawking your local dealers for a new OBS and dropping into see it in person. It definately doesn't look any worse than a solid colored Impreza. I'm not the only one that thinks it looks better |

I was also wondering if you ever considered the 09 forester when buying the 09 OBS. I havent seen either in person and dont know how they compare side by side in person.

Mind you, I had a few brews this aft, but I will ramble anyway. For me it started w/ the Saab 92-X. I wanted an AWD hatch/wagon. I've been driving the my g/f's 07' Forester and my 00' Integra. The 08' Impreza 5dr's came out and the OBS was obviously the nicest version of it. After being in love w/ the Black, i ended up seeing the Silver in person and had an even bigger crush. Then I started to feel like the OBS was too small, started moving towards the 09' Foresters that came out. Eventually I convinced myself of getting the new Forester. Moonroof was key. I'm still mad they didn't offer the option on the 09' OBS but did on the 2.5i Long story short, I turned my research and eye towards a Spark Silver Fozzy. It was all in the bag after seeing them on the lot and doing multiple walk-arounds. Then came the test drive... meh I really liked it... or so I thought. Found a Silver OBS was hiding in back of the dealer... When I saw it, i got my crush back... said f^ck, I need to test drive that thing. First mile into the OBS, i felt so much more at home. The cars I usually drive FEEL like cars. This did too... The 09' Forester really is like a CRV or RAV4 now, lost the agile feel of a car. Disconnected is the best way to put it. So as a matter of fact, I did check out both... side by side too. Forester has +2 inches clearance, HUGE moonroof thats total pimp. Can have leather, roomier backseat... The OBS and Fozzy look very close in size aside from some height and rear leg room. The cargo is smaller on OBS. The feel is gone from it tho, the OBS felt sportier and more connected to me w/o question. Ask yourself what your priorities are... I already have a Forester... If you don't need the added utility, the OBS "feels" better. Forester is definately more versatile tho... If you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer. Go Packers! |

it's ok but, i'd like more power in my 08.
make sure you put some rockblocker on it right away, the paint chips easily. after its "beat in" try the "sport mode" (no manual shifting, just slap it over) for a little better shifting. it could also use the wrx rear swaybar |

I've got an 08 OBS. Love it. I prefer the body colored door handles vs. chrome, but to everyone has their own preference. I've got the Pinks and it handles much better then stock. Although, I am jealous of the red Hazard button.
Since you got an auto, I'd highly recommend picking up the OEM remote start for those cold winters. I got mine and it's a great addition. I'm wondering if I can get those rear inner fenders put in on my 08? |

J/K. Great looking car in those pics-- basically my dream Impreza if money was no object. Unfortunately, it was a pretty big object 2 weeks after we bought our first house. |

Looks like I have to find that center console pocket piece for my 08 and the HVAC unit. I looked in an 09 forester today and it has different knobs...has a metallic finish. wondering where I can get one to swap in my 08.

I have an 08 OBS in black. I like the body colored door handles and I am picking up the sport grill. I put my old Rotas on with 225 tires and now it handles better. I think I may add springs at some point as well. Anyway...I love the car. Congrats on your purchase.

I doubt I will ever throw springs on mine... not after the 6"+ deep snow ruts that froze solid and formed all over downtown Milwaukee last year. I need as much clearance as possible or I'll be scrapin bad! I bought this car mostly for it's Winter abilities afterall... the springs sound nice though!
Thnx for the comments everyone. My SPT exhaust was delivered today according to my tracking #. Hopefully I get that on this week. I'll post pics. I'm still deciding if I want the 09' WRX grill or the regular sport version... is the WRX logo removable? |

I'm honestly looking at the pics of the interior and trying to figure out what, besides the lovely red hazzard button, they changed when compared to the '08.

The pocket and gear surround below the HVAC unit is new. It's from the new GT-S (formally the 08 WRX) with automatic trasmission. Looks a lot like the STI silver trim.

Stupid question: Does anyone know if you bought an 09 OBS and wanted the body color handles how much it would cost in the end with the parts and labor? I have a feeling I would prefer the body colored door handles. Also, would there be much of a difference in price between the body colored door handles and the regular black handles that come with the non premium package 2.5i?
Unfortuantely I probably wont be ready to buy until after the 08's are gone. Thanks............... Last edited by jtom12; 10-14-2008 at 08:40 PM. |

I think for a car they are trying to now market to an older buyer, with families, pets, etc, and who likes to go outdoors as well, such a light interior was kinda dumb. The only change I miss on the 09 is the rear disc and VDC being standard. That would have been nice. |

Speaking of changes, I noticed something different about the 09' yesterday...
The surround around the guages is already outlined in Silver. I know I saw a tutorial on here about modding this yourself w/ a paint pen, but I only test drove an 08' OBS once. This is something new for the 09's right? I was also curious if the 08's had the illuminated ignition ring. My 09' does and I didn't realize it until I was driving it off the lot. Was a nice surprise! |

Nice OBS, Brew. The silver really goes well with the rear tail lights. I think I will need to see it in person, but does anyone have a picture of a black 2008/2009 OBS. Debating between a regular Impreza 2.5i PP or OBS since their about the same price and silver or black.
Decisions, decisions. Oh, post some new pics of the tint job and exhaust already. |
