pull clutches... do they all feel like garbage?
so i've just moved from my old 5 speed push clutch to a 6 speed, which obviously has a pull clutch.
and it's TERRIBLE. the whole thing just feels like crap. there's no modulation/linearity to it either. there's a dead zone after it's disengaged, absolutely nothing, small bit of grab and then huuuge grab. the pedal pressure changes dramatically. seeing as the springs are still pulling back against the fork i don't see why this is happening. it even feels slightly "sticky" at the bottom of the stroke - you have to decrease your foot pressure a LOT to get it to move, and then it kind of "pops" out and nek minnut you're lurching forward as it goes from 0-full engaged in about 1 inch of pedal stroke. feathering it is EXTREMELY difficult. and fast engages that aren't just sidestepping it? forget about it. and it's a STOCK pressure plate. only "upgrade" it has is a sprung 6 puck disc. but that shouldn't change the feel of the pedal or give it a deadzone etc etc. i can even walk around the car and rattle the clutch fork around - the old push type was tight up against the slave at all times. the deadzone at the top of the stroke is also huge on the pull, and was tiny on the push. my old push type had FAR more modulation and maintained very similiar pedal pressure throughout the whole stroke. the bite point was also about 4x the size of this pull type i've got but THAT can be explained by the disc. but as far as everything else goes... what gives? are they all like this? smaller stroke so you can "shift faster" but this gives you a clutch with far less modulation for the same clamp pressure?

This isnt just on the pull ones....I have a 6-puck clutch on my 5 speed (for a 5 speed) that does the same thing. Not much modulation room, and all in the middle of the stroke rather than at the outer edge. Kinda like a Honda. Ive gotten used to it now though...you just have to teach that foot to be more delicate. Also, I have found that knobby shoes make it very difficult, and much prefer my work shoes in order to achieve the more precise movements.

I am battling the same issue, except I have the OEM disc as well. I do have a lightweight flywheel though.
There aren't many things I miss from my WRX, but the clutch pedal feel is definitely one of them. It was near perfect in feel after deleting the delay valve and adding an SS line. I deleted the delay valves and added an SS line on the STi and it is still numb. I little heavier, but numb. I was able to bleed the system just right to take out the slack, however the release point is near the top of travel now. So now it is perfectly annoying. Quick numb heavy engagement at the top of travel. |
