Just went out after the snow and the Impreza did well. I did a hill start without TC and it just went, the VDC did kick in, I assume that was the AWD system working. The stability control straightened the car out well too.

Only thing I found weird was that the abs/vdc sounded like something rubbing intermittantly on plastic, that a real sounding abs system that I am use to.

OK. Were you happy with the DWS?

I was enjoying my Blizzak WS60s up in the Adirondacks, as you might have seen in the video I posted.

I posted my review a page back. They were great!!! Never more satisfied with a tire. I say that because they did a whole lot better than expected. Not as good a the dedicated snow tires but I live right under the snow belt so they will handle what I get down here. Easily conquered 5 inches but 6-7 inches of snow and the car still plows through. But plowing came at a price of one fog light cover. After those pics, I drove to help pick up my sister's car. When I came home the fog light cover was gone. And the car made some sad noises as the snow banged against the bottom of the car.

Finally got around to getting pics of my winter tires setup. I have to say I love the black on black look. These are stock WRX wheels I bought from a member on here and they already had the winter tires on. I sanded them down the best I could and sprayed them all black. The tires are General Altimax Arctic:

Nice, and similar to mine, although my WRX wheels have a matt black finish rather than glossy, and came with Blizzak WS60s:

You guys with the 2011+ imprezzas, what size snow tires are you running? Tire rack suggests either a 195-60-16 or 205-55-16 for snow tires. I'm currently considering getting Bridgestone Blizzaks, Continental ExtremeContact, General Altimax Arctic or Nokian Hakkapelitta. Any other suggestions? I see alot of memebers using WRX wheels, what years are compatible with our cars?

This video of mine (just in case you haven't already seen it) was using Blizzak WS60s in the 195-60-16 size:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...5&postcount=71

So you can imagine that I have no traction complaints with that tire.

My only complaint with the WS60 is that road noise is pretty pronounced, especially when the roads are wet.

On my previous car, I ran General Altimax Arctics (minus the studs), and really liked them. They are a quieter tire, and that's probably what I'll buy next when the WS60s wear out.

Even though I bought my WS60s used on an older set of WRX wheels, I can't tell you what model years of WRX are compatible. I think the guy I bought these from had a 2008, but I'm not certain of that.

I'm running with 205-55-16 Nitto SN2's and have found them to be excellent so far. I haven't tried anything else on this car so I can't tell you which of your options are better or worse, but if you're willing to pay for Nokians you can't really go wrong with them. My winter set up is what the dealership through in when I bought my car and when it's time to replace them I plan on getting Nokians.

Thanks for the quick replies! Looks like either of those tire sizes will work just fine. I'll keep an eye on craigslist for used sets from other WRX owners.

That's how I scored my WS60s on WRX wheels. Got a fantastic deal. The tires only had 5k miles on them. Bought the set for $280.

No TPMS sensors, so my dashboard light is on all winter, but that's no biggie. I check my tire pressure every other fill-up.

Where are you located? It should help inform you on your choice.

For example, i drive on dunlop wintersport 3d on both the sti and the Impreza. Here in Pittsburgh there is not constantly snow all over the roads, but there are times of bad weather that you need to be prepared for. I was looking for a reasonable price, with good performance when it was slippery, but also weren't total marshmallows when the road is dry (since the roads are pretty clear most of the time). The wintersports fit this bill nicely.

On the other hand, if you live where it is constantly snowing, or the area you live in does not do a particularly good job of clearing the roads, you may want a more hardcore snow tire such as Blizzaks or the Nokians. However, these tires are expensive, really mushy if it is dry or if the temps warm up, and can wear out very fast.

I'm in Seattle where its obviously rainy and only gets snow maybe once or twice a year in the city. The stock all season yoko's are fine for the rain so far but I was thinking about getting a more dedicated winter tire for snow since I like to go up to the mountains a few times a season to snowboard. It would also be nice to have for the occasional snow in the city. I probably don't need an expensive or hardcore snow tire but something that's best bang for the buck without sacrificing MPG, Noise, and dry weather handling. The tires will only be on the car for a few months a year. So far, the General Altimax Arctic's are pretty reasonably priced and get good reviews. I guess for myself and my situation, any of the tires I listed below would be more than enough.

Oh another thing, Tire Rack lists 195-65-15 as another alternative size for snow tires. Any issues with running a 15" instead of a 16"?

In that case, i like the dunlop wintersports. As for size, it will probably be easier for you to find someone's used 16 inch wheels at a good price than 15s since they are more abundant. Check your local craigs list for Subaru 16s with 5x100 bolt patterns and find a set that are in good shape. lots of people ditch them to go to after market wheels. They came on a number of Subaru models in different styles.

No. I just like the appearance of a 16" wheel more. But the 15" tires would be cheaper to buy, and would give you more pothole protection. They would probably feel squishier in the handling department, too; I would expect more sidewall flex.

I went for 15" Michelin xi3 from Tire Rack, replacing the 17s on my Ltd. No probs, and they look fine on the car, IMO. (I'll upload a pic if someone will tell me how!) Only have 100 miles on them so far, but a short test up an inclined road with packed snow and ice was pretty impressive. Handling on dry road they're quite responsive, but you do have the less defined center and the delayed bite of a snow tire. I was going to go for the Wintersports, but the Tire Rack guy talked me out of them, on the basis that, if you're going to spring for snows, you might as well get snows, and prioritize cornering the other 9 months of the year. The sense of that, + the fact that the xi3s are supposed to have the best handling in the category, are the ONLY tire in the category with a (40,000 mi!) tread wear warranty - and that the 15s were only $102 - clinched it.

I would have made the same choice of a more hardcore tire if i lived where you do.
