well just tested out the continental DWS tires and subaru awd on pure ice. I must say it was not good. made it up a incline just enough. but not fantastic. in the snow they did great, sorry no video but the ice was...well i already said it. the white car in the video is a friend of mine, we didnt want to run into other cars and we did test it before we put his car there. all i had was my phone so i had to get close to the camera as possible. my friend had to take a call and i just wanted to make a quick video anyways.

Unless you have studded tires, you can expect no more in the situation your video depicts.

Ice is ice. On the positive side, I was damn impressed with traction control. Had a similarly icy incline, and for the fun of it, I attempted 5 times to drive uphill with TC off - which basically reduced AWD to 2 open differentials and the viscous centre one (same as on older imprezas). Niet, zilch, nada. No matter how I played with the throttle, wheelspin occured and every damn time I ended up sliding sideways or backward downhill.

TC on - 5 tsuccesful attempts. Slow as hell, engine nearly bogged, brakes were rattling, but it did crawl uphill each time. Maybe I was just lucky to hit a situation for which TC was calibrated at its best, but it bloody worked.

I've been impressed with the traction control too. I've driven the car up some long, steep hills with several inches of fresh snow without issues. Compare this to our other car that can't even get up the snowy ramp to our parking garage unless you floor it at from the road and make it up by pure momentum. I can stop the Impreza halfway up and then continue up like it's nothing.

Well, I now find myself looking forward to upcoming snow. I'll be picking up a set of wheels for winter tires this weekend and have already ordered a set of the Blizzak's that so many are pleased with. Lake Erie is still open and lake effect is expected most of next week, along with the coldest air in two years, (or so says the local weather.) Hopefully, I'll have the snows on the car early this coming week.

I have to admit, I never look forward to the snow. This is my fifth Subie and living in the "Snow Belt" south of Buffalo, I love my Subaru's! I have never gottten stuck and always make it home at the end of the day.
With snow tires on her, she's like a tank! I just wish Subaru still made the Baja because it was my favorite model.

I have a friend that works for Cattaragus(sp) County. He mentions lots of snow there.

I got the rims off a member today. We had a cup of coffee. It was a pleasure meeting him! Got the tires to the store yesterday, so I went there upon returning home and I am now ready to go:

Well, here it comes. Don't like it but glad I'm prepared.

NWS Cleveland Ohio:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CLEVELAND HAS ISSUED A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.

* ACCUMULATIONS... 12 TO 24 INCHES... MAINLY FROM THE EAST SUBURBS OF CLEVELAND TO NORTHWEST PA. LOCALLY HIGHER ACCUMULATIONS ARE POSSIBLE.

* TIMING... LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.
* WINDS... WEST 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH.
* IMPACTS... ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL MAKE ROADS SLIPPERY REQUIRING LOWER SPEEDS AND GREATER DISTANCES DRIVING DISTANCES BETWEEN VEHICLES. DRIVING CONDITIONS CAN ALSO CHANGE QUICKLY IN A SHORT DISTANCE WITH LAKE EFFECT SNOW.
* TEMPERATURES... 4 TO 20 ABOVE.
* VISIBILITIES... LESS THAN 2 MILES.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WATCH MEANS THAT SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER IS POSSIBLE IN LOCALIZED AREAS WITHIN THE NEXT 36 HOURS

Since 5:30AM, the temp has fallen from 40F to 27F and still dropping. It has been very, very windy for the last two days with winds from the Southwest. Now they're out of the west and changing to the Northwest which will likely produce the Lake Effect since the lake is unfrozen and much warmer than normal for this time of year. Here we go........... The next few days look to be interesting.

Hey Guzzi1, Nice tires! At the moment all I have here is a dusting.....which I'm quite happy with....no shoveling! I live in Catt. Co. too, so I'm used to the snow.
I bought a set of four steel rims off of my local mechanic and had my 16" snows mounted on them(from my last Subie)! This spring the factory 17"s will go back on her.....I can't wait! LOL!

I drove through 5-6" of unplowed snow the other day getting off my hill and my car was perfect. It just ate that stuff up! When I got out to the "main" street it hadn't been plowed either but the snow was all beat up and there were piles from people plowing their driveways into the street and a few 12-15" high drifts. My XV didn't even flinch and we passed all sorts of cars stuck in the middle of the street, BMW X drives, Benz 4Matics and a bunch of Hondas and Camrys. I turned the tunes up, opened the window and waved to them as I went by

My buddy lives in Little Valley. If I get over that way, I'll check in and maybe get a cup of coffee somewhere or something. Usually, I pass through there a couple of times a year, but generally it is on the way someplace and I hit Salamanka for gas.

Default 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport Premium 5 door. What snow tire should I get?

Just purchased a 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport Premium 5 door. I have been looking at Tire Rack, and local tire dealers in New Hampshire. I have also been looking at revoews on this site, and other sites as to what is the best snow tire for this area.
Blizzak WS70 reviews on dry pavement on not very good.
Michelin Ice x3 reviews are better on dry pavement, but the snow traction is a little less.

I drive around 60 miles per day on back roads and highway and am not quite sure which to buy.

How about the performance winter tires. Are they still a lot better than all seasons, or am I better off with a studless snow tire?

This is my first Subaru

Thanks,

Greg

General altimax arctic you can get them unstudded or with studs if you really need them performance winter tires are not worth it you won't have enough traction when you really need better safe than sorry and stick to real snow tires Altimax perform on same level as blizzak but are cheaper no issues on dry pavement just drove home through 8" today lol

Gman, you may have already found this, but if you hit you tube and search "winter tires" or "winter tires vs. all season tires", you will find tons of info regarding winter tires and their compound. You can take that info and apply it to your situation. If you are willing to keep your eyes on the private for sale section, you may come up with a set of rims for winter tires within driving distance. (A tank of fuel is cheaper than shipping and much less hassle for the seller.) Maybe more up front, but the ability to simply swap tires and wheels makes winter tires much more attractive and eventually you will save the expense of swapping tires on your rims. It all works out in the end.

As for the actual need, I have not purchased winter tires for many years until now. My previous Subaru, as well as this one, does a fine job in the snow, but it will not stop any better than anything else. It is pretty obvious after doing research, that all season tires don't come close to winter tire performance when it gets cold out. When the temps drop, winter tires begin to out perform their all season or summer counterparts, regardless of dry, wet, snow or ice. All tires are a compromise based on intended use. I can't speak to the Blizzak WS70, but the WS60's get very high marks from the tests and actual users [for their intended use]. Based on the rave reviews on this board, those are what I went with. Ask yourself, are you really going to push your car to its limits when the weather is bad? Do you really NEED that final degree of super handling, which btw is diminished in cold temps anyway? If you want to maximize your ability to make an evasive move, stop in a shorter distance, and accelerate faster, (also possibly avoiding a fender bender from behind), then consider the best tire for the application and don't get too hung up on some high performance all season FWIW.

edit: I recently had this conversation with a friend who bought a new Outback recently. He said he wasn't going to bother with winter tires because he was on an even playing field right now with other cars on the road. His logic was that it is safer to be on an even playing field. My reply was this: "So having 10 cars on the highway that can't stop of perform evasive moves is better than 9? Of course if you think about it, that is ridiculous. It could be the difference of getting out of a jam or not.

John

I can speak for the blizzak ws 60 as I had them for 4 seasons they are extremely good in winter weather and back roads of Vermont I switched to the altimax because they offered the same performance and were cheaper by a few bucks. The lm version if you check it on tire rack says performance tires which is mainly for the kind of winters you get in Europe which isn't New Hampshire with mountains back roads and etc when it snows in Europe everywhere shuts down heck some countries don't even have snow plows
From tire rack Performance Winter / Snow
You want enhanced dry road handling from your winter / snow tires and are willing to trade some snow and ice traction to get it.

So what is your preference sliding around roads in nh and spinning out ending up in the ditch or being able to have better traction and stopping ability choice is yours. As an FYI if you have a European car I would never recommend a performance winter as German cars in particular are terrible in the snow merc beamers the ever overconfident Quattro driver and turbo Porsche cayannes crashed on the side of the road
