This was my dream car and I was lucky enough to get one at age 16.

There's a lot of users here who will have something cynical to say to you about your age and the car you own. I suppose, to a degree, I'm one of these people. More than anything, what I want to say is that there's a serious trend of people your age doing dumb **** in these cars. Please dont be part of that statistic.

There's been a photo circulating social media the last few days of a destroyed WRX (or perhaps an STI?), that an 18 year old male crashed, killing his 17 year old passenger. Don't be this guy. Don't go out street racing. Don't be a part of the statistic that makes insuring a WRX more expensive than it has to be.

Utilize this forum, research any mods you may decide to do and read the forum rules. Good luck out there.

Here you go:

I can relate, as my son has wanted a bugeye since he was 13. Last year we surprised him with a blue '02 WRX(almost all stock as well). He actually saved his grass cutting money when he was 13 and got a job at a local park when he turned 14. He paid four payments when he worked during the summer as well as the tax and title transfer fees and many of the maintenance items so far. He turned 15 last month and has begun his summer job already on the weekends while still in school. Next month he is getting all the parts for a timing belt job which we'll do.

My point is, you will come across haters with having a car like that at your age. If it was a goal and you worked for it and your parents taught you responsibility and to be yourself and not listen to idiots, you'll be OK.

I'm not naive enough to think a 16 year old that loves the WRX will only ever drive like an old lady. But when it's something you have busted your butt for and cherish it and are a responsible person, you are ahead of the game. Unfortunately there have been young people that acted foolishly in far less powerful(and far less safe) cars out there and paid dearly for it.

You don't need a WRX to text while you are driving and kill someone. Be smart and be safe and enjoy that car. It looks like a beauty!

Thanks! I saved birthday money as a kid waiting to buy a car and fell in love with WRXs around 2 years ago. It's really cool your kid is working for his I feel like working for mine helped me understand the value of it. I don't let anyone other than my father drive it and really do anything to it. Although this may sound odd coming from someone as young as I, its really nice to know there are still other kids out there who know how to work hard and grind for what they want. Cheers to you and your son.

I understand your sentiment but I don't think your situation is anything to brag about.

I don't see how I was bragging but this is Exactly what I mean by hate I guarantee you're in your mid mid 30s and you're taking the time out of your day to reply to my post that I'm bragging. Im sorry that you feel this way about this situation. I'm am not ashamed to be living at home at 18 years old I don't plan on moving out for a few years and by then the car will be paid off. I just don't understand how you guys just like to be negative towards young men who buy new cars, it seems to be a trend on these forums. I believe it is the jealousy of the older guys that they couldn't afford to have their "dream car" at a young age.

Yeah I don't understand how he is bragging. I don't understand the issue with young men getting into these cars, that is who they are tailored for. I'm only 22 and have had 5 cars and my 2017 sti is paid off. I have worked 2 jobs the whole way through high school and college and am proud of what I have earned. Don't let anyone give you trouble man, enjoy the cars, congrats to both of you guys.

If you are young and you are thinking more about getting your car paid off and lowering your debt than you are making "sick" horsepower to a car you aren't even close to having paid off, you are doing it right.

Keep at it guys and don't be tempted by chasing the 700whp builds you see here and elsewhere too soon. Get/stay out of debt, have patience and learn to save and then buy with cash.

You'll be glad you did. Otherwise, 20 years from now, your cars will be long gone and you'll be no better(or worse) financially then you are right now. It happens all the time.
