Default How bad is it to drop a bolt in the engine?!

Well, I was attaching the last wire of my grounding mod - the one that goes to the passenger side engine manifod... and sure enough I dropped the dam bolt in the engine!! Its LOST! nowhere to be found, and I looked for a long time.. It made 2 clinks against metal and then stopped somwhere. I'm not about to start unbolting all sorts of stuff to find it.. I used another bolt to secure the wire, but how bad is it now to have this bolt floating around??? From where I dropped it, I don't think its really in harms way of the belts/fans, but I'm not sure!

And please, no replies that just say 'your screwed'

Ts

(I started the car and drove it w/ no problems.. I also made some hard stops from forward and reverse trying to make it drop, but no luck)

Thumbs up

You just dropped it in the engine compartment, and not inside the engine, right? If it's just in the engine compartment, it shouldn't be a problem; heck, it probably fell out on your drive home. I've done the same thing on several of my cars, and it's never been a problem, unless I didn't have a replacement for the bolt I dropped. Now, if you somehow dropped it inside of the block or heads, that's bad, but sounds like you didn't have the engine taken apart or anything, so don't sweat it.

Take off your intercooler and look. Will take ten minutes and you just may find it.

I swear the wrx has more bolt/screw/nut/socket-catching nooks and crannies than anything else I've ever worked on! I don't think I have evr just dropped something and have it clink and clank its way all the way to the ground. Sorta eerie the way it sucks up small parts.

the car ran fine and he lived happily ever after

I lost the small nut that holds the clamp to join the two parts of the turbo together. Two weeks later I pulled off the IC to install a knock link and found the nut sitting on a ledge under the cruise control unit. Poor little guy didn't want to let go of my car.

I had a spark plug fall and get wedged under a shock absorber near the crossmember. It made my entire car virbrate at idle. It took me an hour to knock the little bastard out of there. That's probably the worst that could happen unless of course you like a free massage.

i thought if you drop a screw in the cylinder it would just shoot out the tailpipe!

When I first saw the title of this thread I was a little worried. I thought you actually dropped a bolt into the ENGINE itself. That would be very bad. Engine compartment is no big deal, I've lost all kinds of crap under the hood of my rex. Some pliers, a socket, a bolt... No big deal, you'll find it eventually.

Yeah, this is what it looks like when that (in this case, a bunch of BBs) happens:

I count how many times I have heard freinds talking about working on their old muscle cars. Putting the air filter nut on the carb for some reason. Then deciding to test fire the car without the air filter on. The secondaries would open and then "kthunk". So weird I have heard this story from multiple people.

My wagon came from the factory that way...
I had to remove the grille when I installed my Supertones and found an extra clip just sitting there. The little bugger was in there for over 700 miles...

I had a Jeep Cherokee I "lost" a screw in. (no, not inside the intake). Everythong was fine so I forgot about it. Ona trip I heard a very loud screeching noise. The little bugger had worked its way down between the crank pully and the block.

Freaky, but still did no damage (except to the bolt). My nerves were sure shot after that.
