5Zigen Blog entry 2/16/2011 (Impreza for Drifting)

Well well well where do I start with this? So basically I've had this dream/idea of having a SR20 powered subaru. Since my 1st love was a gc8 and my 2nd was my SR/S13 I only thought it would be necessary. I always wanted to do it but was low on funds. I got together with some newly acquainted people that are pretty damn good at what they do when it comes to fabrication and wiring. The guys down at Duncan Motors here in Vallejo, CA have been more than helpful to me. The guys down there most definitely know what they're doing especially when it comes to fab work and electrical. We are going through the process of making EVERYTHING perfect for this setup from motor placement to the actual geometry of the car. This car has a lot of man hours and patience put into it, and when you see the finished project you will understand why. This car already had a SR in it and was running but was strictly a mock up, but the engine blew so now I'm basically starting over. I yanked the old motor and got another one. Basically what we have here is a 95 Impreza L that has been converted from AWD to RWD. The car was originally supposed to be a track car, but I'm working on putting interior back together and using it on a daily basis. I know there is less than a handful of people already trying this swap, but i plan to be the first on actually having it running and driving with ZERO problems. For the mock fit, the crossmember was lowered 1 1/2inch and notched. We used solid polyurethane S13 engine mounts with a S13 Nismo transmission mount. The welded R160 differential and 1-piece driveshaft is already made and ready to go as well. Please feel free to ask any questions. These are pictures of where the car stood almost 2 years ago. (02 WRX dash, FMIC and some other things haha). The nicer/cleaner looking Impreza is just a parts car i bought. More pictures will be posted after every step is complete!

After everything was mocked up at my house I transported it to my buddy's shop (Duncan Motors) where the tear-down and build up was started. All the interior was ripped back out, wiring was started and exterior parts were spread out. The wheels i went with were 17x9.5 +22 5Zigen GN+ that im exceptionally pleased with.

We then began mocking up the fitment for the 40mm B-Magic widebody with the wheels and this is how it turned out.

Formula D-Spec 6pt cage was built and welded in, made a custom fuse box/computer panel mounted behind the switch panel, and started the body work process. body work was pretty intense not knowing i was working with a pretty meticulous group of guys who wanted everything perfect.

^^^Finished product. Went with a metallic forest green color. What we had was several different shades of green then mixed them all in one can and it came out with this. The pictures dont do the paint justice. Once this is buffed out and i get a better photographer (other than myself) then you will see the true color.

Since paint I managed to put the turbo setup on, order 06 STI hubs/brakes so i could eliminate the hub adapters, and also pick up a some 500 Series Fortune-Auto Coilovers. Be patient you guys. She is making steady progress. Now on for the pictures...

This past week has been non-stop. This week was dedicated strictly to finishing the crossmember for proper engine placement. We moved the motor 2inch back and 1inch down from the original fitment. We ended up managing to make the stock steering rack work with the new crossmember aswell, however we had to make completely custom mounts and mounting brackets which came out even better then I believed they could. Tomorrow we will start on the transmission mount then on to the exhaust and intercooler piping. The cage will also be re-done to 1 3/4inch tubing and built to SCCA Spec (It will still be a drift car just different spec cage). Stay tuned. I can see the first start-up happening soon. And also contact me if you're interested in the BEST quality roll-cage you can get in Northern California.

Crossmember is in with the new mounts and mounting brackets:

This crossmember is one hell of a piece. We actually kind of tested it with a porta-power to see if it would hold and the porta-power actually started leaking fluid and couldn't pump out any more pressure to it. I couldn't be happier with the way it came out. I hope to keep you guys intrigued as the build goes on.

Today (11/27/11) I went back over to my friends garage where my car currently is to do my part in finishing up on the transmission mount and getting the crossmember/mounts painted for their final installation. I also decided to take advantage of the time while the pieces were out of the car to feed you some more detailed pictures so you can see exactly what kind of skill/fabrication had to go into this project. Enjoy

Tomorrow the crossmember/mounts will go back in the car and we will begin the making of the downpipe, mounting radiator, forming the intercooler piping. I apologize for all the posts but it limited me to 10 images per post. From here on out i'll be dating my updates so you know the current progress of the car. These are all my posts from other forums.

HAHA yeah once I got my first S13 and put a SR in it I pretty much grew attached to that motor and learned most fundamentals on engine building on that motor, so I thought it would be necessary to put my favorite motor in my favorite exterior styled car...GM6

I'm using the SR20 transmission. However, I haven't decided on what rear end I'm going to use yet. I'm bouncing back and forth between 06 STi R180 and a S13 R200. The R180 is more expensive but way easier to install, and it's a vise-versa situation for the R200. If i find a GOOD DIY write-up on the R200 I might do that.

awesome build man! great to see more people making subaru drift builds! I'm sure you will be very pleasently suprised once you get the car sideways at how amazing they are for drifting!

Be sure to check out Derrick, Russell, Stephens and my builds if you haven't done so already. Tons of helpful stuff in each of them.

Biggest advice I can give you is put considerable time into modifying your steering. If you have GC non-abs knuckles, they are perfect for drilling in order to get more angle, and drill significantly in as it makes a world of difference. On the other hand look into where the front tire will hit as on my GDB it hits the frame rail right where the cross member bolts and i had to knotch it significantly.

I'm assuming the impreza L was FWD, and if so that rack travels further lock to lock than other suby racks and gives you roughly 10 degrees more steering angle.

In terms of the rear diff, r180 or r200 are both really fine. Just make sure you don't use the stock rear axles as they will snap in a second. Check out this thread for a lot of good pics on getting the r200 in there!

Can't wait to see this thing sideways!

Thanks man! yeah I've looked/viewed all of their builds and took little bits from each one. My Impreza L was a AWD 2.2 model, however I did pull the steering rack from a 95' FWD because I already knew about that mod, but thanks for reinstating it. As far as knuckles go...I'm using all 06 STi components with a custom Cortex Racing Bump Steer kit that hasn't been made yet. If everything works accordingly we will possibly mass produce it.

Thanks man! I really do try and be different in everything I do, and with this build my patience has had its work out haha. I wanted to give up so many times, but the people helping me pushed me to complete it. I couldn't have done it without them.

Thank you! yeah a lot of people give me a hard time on how long it has taken to get to this point, but I keep reminding them, "It's because I'm doing it the RIGHT way." I'm a very meticulous person so everything has to be perfect. I swear I've done numerous things to this car 1, 2, sometimes 3 times, and have changed my mind numerous times on different exterior ideas. Keep up with the build! glad to see people enjoying it!!
