Default gotta hand it to those evo's....

they make some pretty insane power on the stock turbo.....stm has a pretty low reading dyno. cars that make ~320whp on their dyno tend to trap ~116ish.

On a side note, this dude with stock turbo made 51whp at ~7k from a tune and 272 Kelford Cams....

Its a pretty similar set up to my buddy's....trying to find a turbo for the legacy that will get the job done next time i see him...but i have a feeling its going to be more than a 68hta that I was planning. I have to admit, the Evolution was what I really wanted, but the Legacy GT was the best compromise between that and a Honda Civic EX I could strike with the Mrs. and not end up divorced.

evo's have larger stock turbos then STi's...

Plus they hold the power to redline...

We don't.

Yeah I know that much....Im not really curious as to how or surprised that they do make the power that they do. I think what is surprising is the fact that they seem to spool that thing pretty darn quick and, as you mentioned, keeps building power to redline.

Its a better flowing better built engine with a bigger stock turbo. It's not rocket science they put out good #'s and times on the stock snail.

The STi's have a joke of a tubro. They should have come with a HTA68 stock.

yeah drama wasnt really what I was going for....no need to get butt hurt over it. It was more put up as like "hey thats quite a gain, my buddy's evo is about like that and I want to beat that car without putting a turbo on thats so big it alters the atmospheric pressure of the 4 surrounding zip codes when it spools."

I was hoping the 2010 sti would have the turbo located right off the manifold, then maybe we would see similar gains and spool that the evo's do. Gotta wait till 2011 now it looks like.

i tune both and mod for mod they stay pretty close power wise. Some are willing to go alittle farther than other to make more power. You can tune an sti with a turbo back and hit 330whp on a mustang dyno at 20-21psi. Yes it will start to run out of air but its do able. Also quicker spool, and alot more tq.

Not trying to say anything about STM's tuning because Emery and the STM guys are kickass people and know their crap. Add to that the dsm we took to jersey last week has a huge STM window banner and says stm dsm on the plates lol

Adding to this....

The jdm and usdm evo engines are close to the same aside from the ecu.

The jdm and usdm sti engines and turbos are completely different. We get the crappy ej257 (yay torque ) with a crappy turbo and cylinder heads while the jdm models get the golden child (ej207, big port heads, ts turbo) - these will actually make power close to redline with some mods.

Very good point.

My friend did a full JDM V7 swap with a TS manifold and turbo. He said he would never in his life choose a 2.5 STi over the JDM 2.0 setup. The bigger turbo spools faster, the AVCS picks up the bottom end, and it held good power to 8K.

Like nearly every car in existence, the USDM got hosed in comparison to the JDM.

the 4G63 engine kicks the ej257's ass in every way. It will run around 400whp for 100,000 miles. For most people(evo and STi owners) this is exactly what we want. Go over 530-570whp and the evo will still most of the time last about 40,000 miles from what i've read and seen.

Things awesome about the evo engine

2.0 but still with the ix has mivec and can spool huge turbo's pretty damn well even compared to our 2.5 liter ej257, closed deck so it deals with heat much better, takes more timing, has a shorter exhaust path and great turbo placement, has an awesome intake manifold stock, has awesome exhaust manifold stock, has great cams stock, has great fuel system and the injectors last until around 350whp which is good enough for most nasioc users The motor also revs really well and doesn't use gas nearly as bad as the ej257

cheers, i'm getting a 4G63 next. I will still go to GST motorsports though As they have awesome prices for parts and they tune evo's as well.

ibphatrontellsmetheej257hasonlybeenoutforxyearsand istooyoung...idon'tcarethe4g63willALWAYSowntehej25 7nomatterhowmanyyearspass. It's sad but true, I would love the ej257 to be better, but it's never going to be unfortunately. It's just not well engineered for big power and to deal with heat well. #4 piston and the ringlands .com=teh suck
