News Nissan and Seattle announce zero-emissions vehicle alliance

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/04...electric-cars/

Quote:
Nissan and the City of Seattle share in the belief that electric vehicles offer one of the best solutions to reducing CO2 emissions. …

In Seattle, power comes from the city's utility, Seattle City Light, the first public utility in the world to be "net zero" for greenhouse gas emissions. … "Electric-powered transportation is particularly attractive in a city with a carbon-neutral utility, generating clean electricity through hydropower."

As part of the agreement, Nissan and the City of Seattle will develop plans to promote a charging infrastructure for EVs, as well as the deployment, operation and maintenance of a charging network. The partners also will work to coordinate the establishment of policies and help streamline the deployment of an EV infrastructure. Nissan also has agreed to make available a supply of EVs in and around the Seattle metropolitan area.
if this plays out right it might make seattle a more attractive place for my wife and i to move back to in 2014, when i'm due to finish my fellowship after finishing up my residency program in 2013. of course, there are some other very cool places with electric vehicle pilot programs in the works, too: portland (iirc), the bay area (of course), and hawaii (!)…

So far, in my travels of the United States, I still feel that Seattle > everything else. Yeah, I'd like more sun/heat, but overall, it's still my favorite city. This is one more reason.

I visited Seattle back in December of 2006. I loved the city and have always wanted to move there. I got to see a Seahawks game, and for the last three years, I have been a die hard fan--and thats coming from someone in TN.

Interesting topic, I was unaware that the city was under such carbon controls.

BTW, say what you want, I would totally drive that Nissan.

Ever been to Boulder CO? ... But I do somewhat agree, Seattle is a nice place, and back when I was a lot younger, I dreamed of living there. Maybe sometime soon I will make it out there to live.

Not that I know of. Seattle (and Washington) is environmentally conscious WITHOUT resorting to draconian rules and laws like California or Oregon.

I can't quite decide which one is my more favorite city: Colorado Springs or Seattle. People complain about the constant rain and gloom over there, but I actually like that kind of weather. New York and Los Angeles would really benefit from this, though they both already have large fleets of hybrid Civics in their various transportation departments. LA's parking enforcement vehicles are Civic hybrids. They don't have a plug-in EV fleet like what Seattle is planning.

those are two pretty different cities (as far as political views are concerned)

seattle's carbon status benefits greatly from having abundant hydro power with a sizable amount of wind power as well, combined with a temperate (if wet) climate that minimizes the heating and a/c requirements to maintain a liveable temperature. basically it's an accident combined with the good fortune to have had hydroelectric dams built back when investing in infrastructure wasn't a socialist proposition.

Vostok, what draconian rules in oregon do you refer to? i love portland, probably even more than seattle.

a fleet of Priuses or Civic Hybrids does not an environmentally sound city make. LA is unsustainable in the long term due to its water and energy requirements, whether people drive electric cars or cruise around on hoverboards.

I read this article this morning on yahoo.

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/40565...llution29.html

A new report on air pollution by the American Lung Association gives poor marks to King County: An "F" for ozone levels and a "C" for particle pollution.

The report, released Wednesday, comes as Department of Ecology officials wrap up a recommendation on how to handle the region's violation of the Clean Air Act last year. In August 2008, Seattle and the Puget Sound area exceeded a federal smog standard for the first time since the 1990s.

That violation and the Lung Association's grades -- which cover the period from 2005 to 2007 -- are not an indication that Seattle's air became dirtier. Rather, they reflect stricter smog standards that the Environmental Protection Agency imposed last year.

"Many counties got an F for the first time," Janice Nolen, assistant vice-president of national policy and advocacy for the Lung Association, said Tuesday.

"That does not necessarily mean the air is getting dirtier. It means we've had unhealthy air all along."

Neither does an aging fleet of Crown Vics, Impalas, and cavalry.

Ridiculously low speed limits, constantly threatening to ban any sort of modification like California did. Can't think of any specifics at the moment but there's lots of reasons I don't like Oregon
