my wife scrubbed the front bumper on her 2012 WRX last night.
Brand new car completely stock. Same parking lot she's been driving her 2008 OBS in and out of for 2 years with no issues.
First time thru with the WRX and the bumper scraped pretty good.
After owning several Subies, this appears to me to be a poor design move.
I am looking for a lip or under plating to help protect the bumper, I forsee replacing this part a few times over the life of the car.

Subaru, or any can company for that matter, can't design a car for every scenario with every driver in mind. That's not realistic. I've taken mine over many questionable inclines/declines where I expected a scrape bit never did. I'm actually quite happy with mine.

I agree with you on pleasing all users all the time, but the 2012 WRX we have is considerably easier to hit or scrape the front bumper around here than the 2008 Impreza 2.5i OBS was. I don't think we have ever hit or scraped the bumpers of either our 2006 2.5i wagon that's lowered, or the 2008 OBS we traded on the 2012 WRX.

I've taken my STI down some steep inclines and offroad as well and have never once scraped or touched anything. Don't try to rally up steep inclines at higher speeds than you should and this won't happen. The faster you go the more the suspension will compress and the greater chance you have of doing damage. You don't need to creep like a V dub but just take it slow.

Get the lip before you do it again and crack the bumper. The bumper is cheap plastic and a has a very weak point, where it has cracked for plenty of people.

People who are saying it's driver error (not just in this thread) dont know what they're talking about. I cracked my bumper on a driveway, where a friend scrapes their 2010 TL every single day! Even autoweek, has mentioned the bumper in their long term update. 2nd to last paragraph...

Its a crappy design flaw, especially for a rally inspired car. Why on earth would you design the bumper to be so susceptible on a car like this?! I've never seen a more flimsy bumper before, and its almost like its not really attached all that well, because it flex's just looking at it.

Get the ABS lip and bolt it down good.

I had an '03 Cobra bumper on my '03 GT which has a 2" thick black ABS lip at the bottom. It's supposed to be held on with plastic push pins but I bolted it on with about 15 1/4"-20 bolts and nuts. I scraped the crap out of it because my car was slammed, but you could barely tell unless you were 2 feet away and it didn't affect the painted bumper at all.

Pardon the newbie question here folks. I cracked my front bumper just the other day while trying to exit a steep but not too steep driveway. My Saab would have handled it no problem, and I tried taking it at an angle and really slowly, but I guess there wasn't any avoiding it, and now the bottom is scraped up pretty bad. There's a single crack that's small but runs from the under-edge to the bolt hole as well, at one of the points where I guess a splitter could be attached. I definitely want to put a splitter or something under it that can take the brunt of these instances rather than the front bumper. I'm seeing a lot of posts regarding ABS plastic, and DIY projects, but is there one (or a few) locations that you all have dealt with that sells a solid, simple splitter for a relatively reasonable price? I've found some for around $130+, but I have zero experience anywhere in this market.

Worst part is I took my car into the Subaru dealership because I noticed that the front bumper was a little loose. The guy turned me away because he said they were too busy to look at it, and of course the next day ^this happens. Now I know they won't consider it a manufacturer error because I did scrape it, but I want to take it one step at a time.

Long story short, splitter suggestions?

Thanks guys.

I cracked my bumper a few months after getting the car as well. Rolled over a curb ever so slightly. Since then more paint has disappeared and I have no idea what it hits since I back into everywhere now. My exhaust scrapes everytime I pull into my driveway though. I was super mad at first but I got over it, it's just a car, and it gave me an excuse to see what it'll do on a dirt road. That little endeavor actually lodged a small rock through the gap between the fender and the tail light.

Lol nice. I hear ya on the scraping of the tips. I do it everywhere when I have someone in the back, and I'm at stock height, it's rediculous lol. I was mad at first, but what can ya really do? Damn you Invidia for making such large tips.

I don't want to sound synical, but it's not like you messed your car up on some random road where this issue couldn't be foreseen. It was on your own driveway. Did you not consider clearance issues before your purchase? To blame Subaru is ridiculous. That's equivolent to buying a couch you can't fit through your doorways. Is it the manufactorer's fault for making the couch because it doesn't work for you? Come on...

Check out this link. I bought this replica V-Limited lip for my Rex. It fits perfectly, looks great, and is extremely affordable.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2392194

For the record, I've had my car on many drives since installing this lip where I expected to scrape. Not once have I had an issue. Your driveway must be crazier than you're giving it credit for.

Get a polyurethene front lip and call it a day....That is literally why I bought mine, to take abuse. If it rips off or cracks I'll buy another. Can't believe this is suck a big issue to you or being thought of as a "design flaw".

Woah woah people need to calm down. Before you think we're jumping to conclusions, make sure you're not jumping to a few yourself...

@Decipher: I'm not sure if you were talking to the OP or me, but I never said I hit the bumper on my driveway. It was a dealership driveway. So yeah, I actually did mess it up on some random road where this issue was not foreseen. My driveway is just fine. I'm not blaming Subaru. What I was concerned about is how loose the bumper is, but that has to do with the bolts used or something, and now that I hit the bumper, the dealership won't take a look at said bolts and replace them. But it's an easy fix either way.

Thanks for the link. In your opinion, is this any different from the Bayson R lip?

@DurtyB: This is why I'm super interested in finding something to take abuse so if/when it cracks or rips off I can just buy another. I wouldn't consider it a design flaw...no automaker can account for every possible road situation. I just want to get something so I am covered in almost all situations.

My Rally Armor mud flaps scrape when I back out of my driveway... Should I call Rally Armor and complain of a design flaw too? It's a car and not a truck! My Wrx scrapes far less than my Focus SES! Take it slow pulling into your driveway or buy a monster truck.

I scraped the LF bottom of my bumper the first few days I had it. It's a game of angles in these cars, don't hit a sudden incline head on, hit it one wheel at a time

My message was directed to the OP. That's why I said it was on his own driveway, as the OP wrote in his opening post.

The replica lip is exactly like the lip you can order from Subaru, but at a fraction of the price. The only regret I have is not painting it black before installing it. I have already noticed it is fading a bit from the sun, but that is to be expected when you're dealing with this raw material. Painting is an easy and fun fix.

My 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009 does not scrape my 2011 does. Not a design flaw per se, just a change. The flaw if there is one is where it cracks virtually the same place on all the cracked bumpers.

Does this add any rigidity to the bumper, so if you do scrape it won't crack the bumper as easily? Or is this purely aesthetic /to prevent paint scratches on the bumper?

Gotcha. No harm done.

What type of paint would you use? And where would I get said paint? I'm ready to buy!

I have scraped my front bumper bottom up on my inclined driveway too. I just put some oem paint on it, it looks decent enough. I do want to get a lip though.

I've got a new 2013 and a seriously horrible & steep driveway. Put it this way, my 2011 Outback barely clears the approach and desent if you take it dead on. I actually almost didn't get my WRX because I feared my driveway so much, but on the first day I had my wife watch as I took it at a sharp 45 degree angle, even worse is the the curb at the base that barely clears the rear bumper & exhaust. I basically have to creep it but the good news is I've done it 20-30 times since I've had my car and no rash yet.
