Midnight is no excuse. I do lots of midnight shooting. If you don't have them already, get a tripod, a shutter remote, and a really good flashlight. I spent some money on strobes but find that the lighting tool that I use more than anything is a high-power 5500k flashlight. Practice with whatever you have and see how long it takes you to get properly exposed and evenly painted.
When you review your shots later look at them and ask "what did I intend to shoot vs what did I actually shoot?" and hopefully followed by, "what could I do next time to make it better?" I think the second one was the most successful, but the third has a lot of potential. They're good starts if you are inexperienced with lightpainting techniques. I love LP and am happy to share my knowledge freely, but you'll have to PM me with specific questions. What settings were you using for these shots?

I have a tripod and a buddy has couple good headlights, but i really need to invest in shutter remote. this is my first camera and first time shooting, so i know i have a lot to improve on. Thanks for the advice Red and i will def be asking for more help!
The second pic was iso 400, 47mm, f/8 over a 30 second exposure. The last pic was 200/50/8.0/20 sec. I realize now that iso was way to low |

i did take a couple pics at a higher iso (800 i believe) and the street lights were very bright and brought a lot of orange to the pic. So maybe shorter shutter and iso at 800 would have made it better?

Not bad. The car could definitely use some more light but it looks pretty sweet in the front.

Maybe there should just be a new thread for light management/light painting/night photography discussion? |

You should discuss it all in this thread so everyone can learn from each other.
