Question Convince Me On Why I Should Stay With and Mod My WRX Or Just Upgrade To An STI...

Here's my scenario...I bought a new 04 WRX not too long ago. It has 2500 miles on it. I began modding it. Engine mangagement, uppipe, blah, blah...I went to my local Subaru, and they worked out a pretty damn good deal on upgrading to STI. I can go new STI for 5K or used for even less...Is it worth trading in for that extra power in the 2.5 or should I just keep modding my 2.0 for it? I would have to save up a lot again in order to start modding the STI...Thanks!

For 5K its a no-brainer. Check out insurance cost first though. If you're going to pay 5k a year for insurance, it changes things.

For me, since I bought an 02, I didn't see any economies in paying twice for depreciation.

definately check the insurance, i used to sell em and for some it was a huge jump up. also figgure in the cost of tires and breaks which go quick on an sti and are very expensive to relpace compared to a wrx.

Get the STI, if you can afford it. You will be happy.

You know I have sort of the same delimma. Although I narrowed it down to 3 cars, 2002 C5 Z06, 2002 M3, or a 2005 STi. I got insurance quotes on all 3 and the Z06 was going to be the least. I don't really need or want 4 seats. All it does is make me the damn lunch wagon for all of my co-workers.

I love my 03 wrx with the vf 39 and my brother loves his STI
Basically you can't go wrong with either. I enjoy the fun factor of building my car up vs buying it done. my 2 cents

the sti is costly and will b harder to maintain. But as long as you can afford it, it would be much better than further upgrading your wrx. Heck you could put you car back to stock and cover more than half of what it costs to upgrade to an sti.

just with i had an 04, with an 02 and the car being paid off, id have to shell out another 15k....

some people have all the luck ...

As soon as you read this, don't walk, RUN and get the STi. You can thank me later.

reason 1: 2.5L 300HP (250-260 awhp)
reason 2: big brembos
reason 3: 6MT almost unbreakable tranny
reason 4: DCCD
reason 5: better suspension bits

there are others, but I'll stop here. Think about how much money in parts (and probably labor) you'd have to spend to come close to an STi in all performance aspects and still be reliable, and then think about the warranty you wouldn't have.

You are paying $5k for a tranny. This is the one thing that you can not do to your WRX for that cheap. Also, a lot of your WRX mods will go right on the STI... The STI uppipe is catless, but your DP, or exhaust are a plus. You EM might transfer, or can be sold to get one that will work.

Well it depends. If you want a project, (I did) then keep what you have and spend the next few years maing it exactly what you want. If you do not want to diddle with it and just want to drive and and feel that a VF22 is a BIG turbo then get the STi and reflash it and go have fun. You'll stomp 2.0 VF22 cars and no need to do more. Who needs a project right?

If one really wants a project it is best to start off with a 13K used WRX and go from there. Otherwise it gets more expensive than an STi. Making a JDM STi from a new WRX is stoopid costly. Starting with a CG8 or something, it can be done with 20K and walk all over the just about everything and the cool factor is through the roof. Damn those were good looking cars!

Just for the record I started with an 03 in 03 so clearly I prefer the less traveled path of stoopid expensive but I got exactly what I want. Bugeye JDM STi in S202 color.

If you are asking this question at this point I would sell and get a USDM STi. You will probably be happier.

Could you tell us what kind of real numbers you're talking about? Most used WRX's aren't worth that much (13K-18K) - and if we could "upgrade" or trade in for a STi (30K) for 5K, there would be folks lining up at the door! It costs most folks 10K plus for that swap. I'd be careful of the "deal" you're getting...

But - if it were a solid deal - for 5K, go for the STi, and swap over any of your high perf parts, and sell the rest. It's a no brainer.

you'll be kicking yourself down the road when you are drooling over costly bigger blocks and turbo's and injectors and intercoolers and stiffer suspension and breaks, hell i'd love all that stuff on my wrx but can't afford it.

The brakes are under warranty untill 36k so beat them all you like and the dealer will gladly replace your pads when under 2mm of life. Maintance wise the STI requires nothing a WRX doesn't.

yup it would take a lot of money to make a wrx as fast as an STI and you won't the reliability, warranty, etc. I say if you can afford an STI then its a no brainer. Besides you can always mod the STI later .

I say ***k the dealer if they are giving you that price based on what mods you have. Return the car to stock then talk trade-in.

Otherwise, if they don't know about the mods, still return the car to stock and sell the parts seperate, you'd get more for your money.
