Default new golf V gti 200 WHP stock!

http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publi...cle_1708.shtml

Read under their dyno plot.
they are saying that vw underrated their engine.
my suby feels faster stock though! so i don't think so.

this has already been hammered to death in here, let me give you the cliffs notes:

it's still front-wheel drive
it's still a volkswagen
it's fairly heavy
200 horsepower isn't terribly impressive these days
it's probably got a nice interior
that's about it.

Those are the typical Subaru fanboi feelings of the GTI. Anyone wanting an objective view of the car can feel free to go ahead and close the browser.

A+++++

VW often underrates or underreports. The 02+ 1.8ts were rated 180, dynoing closer to 190. The R32 is rated 240, but is actually 250. This is probably to avoid competition with other VAG products, or in the case of the R32, it was easier to qualify the Audi 3.2L as it already existed in USDM, at 250, but call the R32 240 like it was in Europe..

My 05 GLI 1.8T is a MONSTER for what little mods I have done. Chip, intake, and downpipe... the thing screams.

I wouldn't trade it for anything...

Most intelligent post evAr.

The new GTI is a great car for what it is. It should not be compared to the WRX.

It's ****ing BRAKES dickbreath.

Ok, well, let's look at why your "comment" was fanboi crap, and disputable:

Quote:
it's still front-wheel drive
True. A limitation, but a common one.

Quote:

By using "still", you obviously imply a derogatory meaning. This is not only disputable, but also typically fanboi crap, inasmuch as it displays the inability to concede that another manufacturer's cars have any redeeming or favorable qualities.

Quote:
it's fairly heavy
Well, true. Which makes it 25/31 gas mileage all the more impressive, especially considering what it putting out at the wheels, and compared to Subaru's universally crappy mileage for the same or not much more at the wheels, depending on which year WRX you're talking about. So again, prejudiced fanboi crap.

Quote:
200 horsepower isn't terribly impressive these days
See the immediately preceding response. For what it puts at the wheels in relation to its economy, it is worthy of respect.

Quote:

Obviously, from this quote, you are making comments even though you apparently have never seen one, sat in one, much less driven one. As a fanboi would.

Quote:
that's about it.
Again, a disputable point. There are obviously more things to talk about this car, good or not so good, than your little list. Also an implied derogatory meaning, which is not only fanboiesque but disputable.

And there we go.

yep, they respond to basic mods VERY well, and end up being VERY quick on the highway.

i have the keys to my friends 1.8t jetta with similar mods right now. it's about as fast as my turbo miata on the highway and with the suspension mods handles VERY well for a FWD.

Yes, and that makes me want a 2.0t. I dont understand why FWD is so 'bad' for a daily driver. I would love a new 2.0t with DSG.

The interior is MINT. German refinement, even in basic form, trumps anything short of a lexus, than you'd have to pay a lot more for a lexus.

Working at a V-dub dealership, with a Mk V GTI in the showroom, I can say that:

Yes, it is fast.

Yes, Front wheel drive sucks. If it was a civc, I wouldn't mind, but it's supposed to be the "performance" model.

It is a little over-hyped. And a little expensive compared to the deals you can get on used cars.

*shrug* It is a good car though. It will be as reliable as any car IF YOU TAKE PROPER CARE OF IT.

VW's got a bad rap when, back in the "hippie" days, people were too stoned to remember to change their oil, or get small problems looked at or fixed.

OH SNAP!

And FWD isn't so bad in a car with such a short wheelbase.

i would think the days of under or overrating horsepower numbers would be over if or when everyone switches to the new SAE certification. It requires an independant third party to confirm the numbers, so unless they bribe the guy, what you see is what you get.

I find it funny that the torque curve Peaks @ 2400 rpm and then heads south after that..
Sigh....
power curve is fairly flat though, since T * RPM = power.. well you do the math lol

That's not why they have a bad rap. I typically hear people speak about the older VW's with great admiration. Even with the problems they had, they seemed to just keep on going.

The newer ones are at the bottom of most reliability ratings for a reason. Seems to be almost a "lemon" issue. Some people have absolutely no problems...those who do have problems seem to have an avalanche of issues, though. It appears to be an all or nothing deal. I know they've supposedly made some advances on the electronics issues recently...but it'll be a few years before anyone knows for sure if there's been improvement for the long term.

Still seems like a neat car. I hated the looks in the commercials...but I've seen a few in person lately and like them. For some reason...almost everyone has been white. Saw two black ones too...but well over 10 white ones.
