Default Made In The USA - A guide to finding decent American-made products

The surge protector thread got me thinking. We need a thread to report decent "Made in the USA" products, with reviews, prices, and places where you can buy them. These can be any kind of product - clothing, consumables, cleaning supplies, automobiles, etc.

I'll start with one of mine:

O.F. Mossberg & Sons: Mossberg 500 20 gauge shotgun www.mossberg.com
I love this gun. It is well-made, and very affordable. I purchased mine from Wal-Mart for $260.00. The gun is very easy to disassemble and reassemble, allowing for easy cleaning and long-lasting performance.

Wal-Mart had the best price on this gun in my area, and as long as it's not made in China, I have no problem purchasing the item from the mega-store. This product can be purchased anywhere that firearms are sold.

Busse Combat knives.

They're made in Wauseon, OH. Small family company that makes some of the toughest knives on the planet.

Ariens snowblowers, made in Brillion, WI. I just replaced my old one with a new one, since the engine on the old one seized up. When I was talking with the dealer, I described the old one .... and I found out it was 35 years old. I also have a lawnmower from them, too. It's very well built. I'm hoping to retire before I have to buy another
http://www.ariens.com/

Lincoln Electric welding equipment is very good, too. Many, many business books have been written about how they run their business.
http://www.lincolnelectric.com/default.asp

And I worked at a place in college called "Intralox", that makes conveyor belts. Very high quality stuff, great company. They also make shrimp peeling machinery and industrial stairs. A privately held company that is very well managed and innovative.

Let's also not forget that the US is a world leader in software development.

Should you need to do mathematical work on your computer, I can't recommend MATLAB highly enough (I work for The MathWorks, headquartered in Natick, MA)
http://www.mathworks.com

I'm a systems admin, and have been very impressed with Netapp's offerings for data storage. HQ in Sunnyvale, CA.

I started my career at PTC, makers of Pro/ENGINEER. HQ in Needham, MA.

My wife works for EMC, HQ in Hopkinton, MA. Not only do they do the SAN disk array stuff, they also do VMWare (well, a majority stake), as well as other computing products. We have been using their Mozy home backup solution to back up our stuff at home, too. $5/mo for peace of mind.

I know that this isn't OT's favorite company, but Harley-Davidson. An american legend for over 105 years. Many books have been written about there buisness strategy.

didnt they get their ass handed to them from the japanese manufacturers and need govt. assistance to bail them out. if it wasnt for that, every old man's favorite oil leaking middle aged rebel-machine wouldn't be in business today. great business model though.

I had nothing to do with that, I deny all knowledge of said product

I do sysadmin work and internal tools development for The MathWorks, mostly I'm supporting the parallel/distributed/HPC group nowadays, after a long stint doing strictly Windows work.

Their business strategy is pandering to the lowest common denominator and slapping their logo on any product humanly possible. I work with people that LOVE Harley Davidson, even though they admit that they're overpriced, less comfortable than the imports, require more maintenance than the imports, and most will even admit that their own is obnoxiously loud. But... Harley Davidson is "manly".... and the entire company seems to be built on a image of Peter Fonda as a rebel biker living the dream.

Take away the mystique of their past, and I can't think of anyone in their right mind that would buy a Harley over a better built Honda/Suzuki/Kawasaki/Triumph/BMW/etc.

What does "Made In The USA" mean? Just assembled/manufactured? Or does it include design, materials, money and everything that goes into it? There are a lot of things made in the US but with parts/materials from other countries.

i work for a heavy truck mfg and deal with country of origin on a daily basis, though i don't get into specifics. there are factors that deternime it such as like you said, the percentage of material and assembly etc that comprises the final product.

here's an american made product: Hardwick Suit Company http://www.smithclothingcompany.com/ . I found them at the S&K men's suit store in the mall; Hardwick isn't stocked but they have a special order catalog. The suit(s) I'm going to get is about $300 and looks to be a good quality for the $$.

You obviosly havn't ridden a harley recently, They are more comfortable, feel more solid, don't leak, and the TC engine will run 200,000 miles before it needs any major maintenance. everything you just said is the typical harley steriotype and nothing close to truth.

Hold on. Wait. Just. One. Second.

Did you just infer that Triumph built a more reliable product then Harley Davidson?

Also, the notion that any major corp makes 100% of its product in the USA is crazy. No sucessful business works like that any more.

For many people, I think what matters is that HQ is in the US.

I would agree that it would be very difficult or impossible to find a company that uses only US-made stuff, it's very likely they import raw materials from somewhere not in the US, or get tooling from overseas, etc.

Subaru Legacy's are made in Lafayette, Indiana, USA.

Chevy Malibu's are made in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Buy Subaru, buy Amercian.
