On the 08 i taken to just pulling the parking brake up one notch. This will disable the hill assist. Then i just stick it back down after i take off.

The hill assist is one of the worst features of the car by far.

On steep hills I have always used the hand brake. It's not any different with my WRX.

I absolutely HATE hill start assist! Try parallel parking in a tight spot on a steep hill... The assist won't let you back up or go forward, then it suddenly releases and you almost roll into a car, then your back at square one with the brakes locked up sitting inches from a car... Now you have to burn your clutch up! ARGGHH!!!

just read through this entire thread and there isn't a way to disable it without having the VDC light staying lit?

Why do the dashlights have to be assbackwards? They should indicate your selection to have VDC or HAS on or off, while at the same time no annoying the piss outta you with bright orange warnings!

If you don't mind it, or have grown accustomed to hill start assist... You suck.

Same here, mines release as soon as I pass a certain point on the clutch.

However it will disengage after X amount of seconds if I keep the clutch pressed in once i take my foot of the brake.

Its only annoying will im a very small incline and its engaged and im trying to turn onto a road.

Other than that it does feel wierd at first, when you used to a manual car, and your on a hill and rev the engine and let go off the clutch and you dont go anywhere then jolt off. <- Had that problem when i first bought it.

I've been trying to disable this damn thing for the last hour or better...

I have a 2010 WRX and I am following the book exactly, I even found a nice level place to do it at. Still no luck at all.

I tried varying the steps a little and no luck at all. I tried not turning the car on, didn't work, tried holding the clutch in the whole time... nothing...

No matter what I do, the VDC light never turns green then back to yellow like the book says and even if I ignore that and just release and then repress and release the button I still get no response from the HSA light.

Has anyone else actually gotten this to work on their cars?

From what I understand, it's no dice on the WRX. I looked into this as well, because it never engages reliably and I don't suck at driving.

You can't deactivate on a WRX.

That's my biggest annoyance with it. It holds when I don't want it to and it holds too strong. I live in a flat state, there is no need for it for me. It's a constant annoyance.

I disabled it on my 10 STi SE. When I read about it, I was looking forward to the feature until I actually used it... It seems to be a timed hold and on a steep hill, if you are quick to engage 1st, the brakes will still be holding.

It just doesn't work for me as the brakes are always holding me back. A lot of times my immediate reaction is to clutch back down and go back on the brakes so it really defeats the intended outcome. At least for me. Now that I got more used to it, I find that when it releases, I'm sometimes lurching forward...

Didn't realize it could be disabled so that's perfect. Just went outside and disabled it.

it seems that different people have different experiences with this "feature". when i had my 08 WRX, i had nothing but problems with it. i have a feeling that there is much variability in the actual implementation of the system.

when i had this on my 08 WRX, it would hold on for too long and my car would eventually lurch forward when the hill-holder system timed out. this wasn't good when starting from stop lights, esp if the person in front of you brakes abruptly and your car is lurching ahead.

Hill Start Assist is killing me. I live in an area with a bunch of hills and have driven manual transmissions since I started driving. I'm very quick to let off the brake and get on the gas, which is terrible since the hill assist holds the brakes for way too long. I'm guessing about .5 seconds would be adequate but mine seems to hold for around 1.25. I practically stall the car trying to get moving forward.

You people that actually like this feature must be very slow at your reaction times or your hill assist holds for a much shorter time. I don't see how anyone with good manual transmission experience could enjoy it.

Yea, anyone that has their "timing" down and can drive a manual properly, will have trouble with this system the way it's set up... It keeps the brakes on WAYyyy too long...

That's odd, my hill assist releases the instant the clutch grabs and have never stalled.

I have tested it many times and it does not hold for xx amount of time (but I have not sat around for more than a second on a hill), just until the engagement point. It has never bothered me and I have driven manual my entire life, which is a long time.

I dislike this option 90% of the time, because it always seems to pop on when I don't want it or need it. However I have used the lift the e-brake up 1 natch and that does work.

I wish that Cobb would come out with a way to shut it off using the Accessport. They have a way to control about everything else, why not this too.

The feature wouldn't be so bad if it smoothly disengaged the brakes and consistently disengaged when the clutch started to grab. The way it suddenly releases them is downright dangerous. I've never noticed it disengaged by the clutch, only by the ENORMOUSLY long timer - I'd be shifting into 2nd by the time it releases. It even engages unnecessarily on slight inclines.

I've had hill assist stall my car 3 or 4 times already, and I've smelled clutch/brakes a couple times when trying to accelerate briskly while the HA didn't disengage soon enough.

No, it doesn't save me any clutch at all. It has also made me nervous about a collision while parking because of the way it releases so sharply.

What a smart feature executed so terribly wrong.

on the 10 lgt, there's a switch for the hill holder - default setting is off.

Your right, it is not needed and I have never turned it on once. I am very glad I have a button to switch it off, along with a button for traction control.

Same here, driven manuals all my life and I never, ever have noticed the hill assist holding the 09 as the clutch engages, not once in 30k mi and I regularly park at my moms house when I visit (she loves her granddaughter) , both ways on one of the steepest hills on the west coast, no problems ever.
