that Hottop is awesome. I kinda wish I had sprung for that one instead of my GeneCafe. Does it produce much smoke? Easy to hear the crack?

it seems that if you go past a full city roast, or some beans (havent figured out if theres a pattern in type of bean) there is definitely some smoke but thats why I have it set up under the hood of my range. I open the slider, and turn on the fan and its fine

first crack is audible over the high setting of the fan, second because of its pitch seems to blend in with the fan so I turn it off when I hear the first second crack

Ordered a latte art pannarello wand to replace the crappy stock wand on the gaggia pure. I learned how to steam on a single outlet wand, so the stock one on this machine is just bugging me! (Already tried the o-ring adjustment. It helps, but it's not perfect.)
Is there any way to replace the whole arm? I've seen discussions where people can change out the wand on other gaggias, but never on the pure due to the way they designed it. Am I out of luck?

I'm starting to pull some pretty good shots too. Still have a long way to go, though.

Let us know how you like the wand. I have not yet outgrown the stock Gaggia wand, but I'm a tinkerer so I'm pretty sure I will soon.

I bought the latte art wand for our Gaggia after the original wand broke. Wifey does all the steaming, not me, but she says it works great and makes real microfoam.

Has anybody seen the show Dangerous Grounds on the Travel Channel? A bit over the top reality TV-ish but still kind of interesting to me.

Well I suppose it lives up to its name - first pitcher of steamed milk and I had latte art quality microfoam. Yee haw!

Oil slick where? On the beans? On top of your brewed coffee?

We've had one of these for 5-6 years, and it's my favorite. We burned out the first one, threw it away but kept the carafe, so now we have two: great for parties when you have a lot of people or want decaf and regular.

I have the exact same one, and I've been using the **** out of it for years. That carafe is great, the coffee stays hot for a long-ass time.

During the day, after I pour in the water, I fill the carafe with hot water and let it sit for a couple of minutes. The reservoir in the coffee maker will hold at least 6 (of 10) cups so there's no rush to get it under the spout. Keeps it hot even longer.

Oil on the bean can be either a function of age or roast level (darker bringing out more oils on the surface). Oil on the surface of drip or espresso is normal; paper filters remove it. Some people prefer the 'cleaner' taste of paper filters.

I want to buy something to make coffee on the weekends, just for myself, sometimes two people. Should I just get an Aeropress and a hand grinder? Would I be able to make an espresso with a hand grinder (even if not perfect)?

I just bought the Hario Slim Mini Mill, and it does espresso grind quite well.

The Aeropress will do very well with a good hand grinder, like the Kyocera slim. The Aeropress is not espresso, no even close, if that is your intent; if you have an espresso machine, and want the hand grinder to do double duty, or think you might someday buy an espresso machine, I would buy a different grinder (or be aware you'll need to buy an espresso grinder later on).

Personally, I prefer the Clever over the Aeropress, unless you want to make faux latte's, in which case the stronger brew of the Aeropress is idea.

i experimented with the aeropress...one of my 'oopses' was....finest grind i could get outta my hario slim mini(which i think is a great lil grinder).....i used right at 1/2 of a full measure of coffee outta the grinder and pre heated everything and let it steep for 60 seconds 'upside down' with 200* water and it made about 6oz of the most wicked strong coffee ever ...dunno what ya wanna call it but it was a jolt for sure.....maybe not espresso but it sure was a jolt

it is great or me because i figured out how to make one 20 oz insulated mug full at a time......do that 2x a shift when im at work and its perfect

get the process down and you can make a great cup of coffee in the time it takes to heat the water and clean up is in seconds.....no fuss no muss
