No point replacing the intake system off the WRX; if anything, just put a K&N filter. I believe a CAI caused the WRX to run too rich or too lean. I forget. Happy Days told me a while back

Um, short ram isn't considered any better. Best to stick with stock.

seriously... not a good idea to run CAI on WRX, STi should be okay (only for some well known brand.)

but you said you are going to get UTEC anyways, BUT UTEC won't take control until you press your gas panel more than 30%. so your stock ECU will still take control of your car MOST OF THE TIME. so your car will still run lean MOST OF THE TIME.

get a reflash which tuned for intake will be better for your need if you really wanna get a intake. but wut's the point?

Sorry if this sounds like a complete newbie question, but why would a CAI be ok for a STI and not a WRX?

STi runs pig rich from stock, (that's why all STi shoot big flames out when they run catless TBE) where WRX runs rich, but not that RICH.

I'm running straight 4" pipe into the fender and I've just got some patches to keep the intake from sucking in too much hot engine air. I put a bit of a twist on the usual snorkus removal, and I took out the black plastic under-hood scoop thing that directs air(and water) into the fender.

I could be wrong, but lately when I'm really going for it the car seems to be 'mushy' at peak output, almost like it's running rich or something.

So I was thinking I should try to add the scoop back in but I want to avoid having it installed on a rainy day.. Argh!

You really don't need to worry about rain. it will not cause your engine to hyrdo lock. Unless you hit a huge puddle and suck a mass of water into the engine, you are free and clear.

Yeah? I guess if rally guys intentionally inject water, the occasional dose of rain water can't be so bad?

Think of it this way....a lot of smaller planes (Cessna and others) will use subaru flat fours as their engines. These are locomacated right in the front and have basically direct air intake from right in front. These planes fly at reasonably high speeds (in comparison to our cars) and rain goes right into the filter and then into the engine. But with that amount of water the rain turns to mist and is all but gone by the time it get's past the throttle body, it does no damage to the engine. You really have to submerse it with a WASH of water before damage will result. That being said, a CAI that goes right to the bottom of the fender well, or "close" to the road is not a good idea in places that have lots of big puddles....if you hit a puddle and submerse the filter, or even rocket a big splash into it driving through a large puddle you will be prone to hydro-lock.

Got me a AEM CAI ... never had a problem. Running stage 4 - the FMIC with EcuTek all tuned up. I deffinetly notice a difference when the cooler weather comes around.... then again the IC like the cooler air... I'll be going to short ram when i get my FM..

This arguement has been done to death. My oppinion... dont waste the money do the silencer delete and a drop in K&N and spend the money on Samco IC hoses and a bigger scoop to get more air flow across the IC..

i assume those subaru techician who designed our cars are much smarter than most of us. so "the black plastic under-hood scoop thing that directs air" shouldn't direct water... even if it does direct the water in there and it won't do any harm to our cars. there must be a purpose for that thing under the hood otherwise they wouldn't put it there.

Here we go again =)

W/o tuning, neither the STI nor the WRX will benefit (consistently) from using a CAI or Shortram.

With the shortram, you get a really nice BOV sound, but -- Incorrect MAF readings can cause problems.

there are MANY intakes in the market won't affect MAF readings...
such as:

http://www.turboxs.com/wrx/wrxintake.shtml
http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/wrx/my01/hfa.htm

ETC.

My Trust foam short ram intake never caused any problems when I ran it. I've had other short rams that really messed with the MAF readings, but not that one.

Originally the scoop fit under the hood sucking in fresh air (and potentially rain/water) into the fender area where it would meet up with the silencer/snorkus that is designed to separate air and water. I don't have the snorkus installed anymore so I am worried that the water will follow the air path and get into the intake.
