Headers, Headers and more Headers?
So what can you really get out some headers?
Anyone have some real world experience with them on a WRX? Is it only for top end power? I know there are a few different types out there, just wanted to gather some feedback. Let's hear it! Steve.. |

Mid to top-end is "all" they're good for.
Get them wrapped or coated before installation. They are not very thick and lose valuable heat quickly. |

Yeah I know but I'd rather hear from those that have them rather than those who are selling them.
Doesn't seem like a mod I will be doing unless it has accross the board benefits. Steve.. |

Do they add to the turbo lag? I read on here that they added lag to bigger turbos, but I forgot what they said about the lag issue on the stocker.

i like my gruppe s v2 header, i put good numbers down, but dont know how much of it is from the header exactly., helps the top end pull the most , which is what i like the best anyways because the wrx lacks that. so for me the header is a must.

On my EJ257/V8 heads/PE1818 turbo car, the Borla headers added no lag and were good for about 10whp up at the very top.

Headers are a low bang for the buck mod. The must be coated to even get close to being close to as good as iron is at retaining heat. The borlas are cheep; both in build quality and cost. If you have a built car and are running a better turbo they may give you some better gains but on a stock car its not worth it. See other threads to my reasons why. Quote:
I <3 you guys... only have 4 links today. But I have changed my stance on them... a little. Edit: I dont know why I post links any more anyway... most of the time people dont even bother to read the threads. They just want the answer they want given to them. i can speak from experience.
I HAD P&P vf34, gruppe-s headers and all supporting mods. max boost of 17psi @ 3600rpm. I HAVE P&P stock headers (thanks Nino's AutoAccessories!) and same supporting mods. max boost of 17psi @ 3300 rpm. I hit 10psi at 2900 rpm. |

I have a HKS header and it seems to have gained some top end, but lost low end.

Just installed Gruppe-S V2 header with Jet Hot coating. I wasn't expecting much at all but as very pleasantly surprised. I agree with blackie. Mid-top end is much more enjoyable now and I don't think I can live without it.
I took a long 3 hour highway drive after the header install and I was grining all the way , So far I have not noticed any lag (if there's any). It was well worth the $549. Btw, I have VF34 and other supporting mods. For those of you with messy oil change problem, check this out. http://www.fumotovalve.com It's the second best mod I got for my car! (behind the remote starter. Can't live without it in Chicago winter!) I can change oil without jacking the car up now and it literally takes minutes to change oil. Had it on since the car was new (almost 3 years) and no problem whatsoever. |

and what are the telltale signs a header is leaking? |

Sound is a bit louder and deeper but not significant enough. I hardly notice the increase.
I can't tell you about the leak as I have not experienced one yet. |

If it's leaking, you'll know it. It can sound like a ticking if it's minor...or a banshee if it's somewhat major. It's nasty. That, and the fact that you're not building boost like you should be.

Sorry, under throttle. You can hear major leaks at idle, but minor ones usually only show up under boost.
