2012/13 Subaru Impreza Wind/Road Noise Reduction?
I am noticing quite a bit of wind noise when driving at high speeds. Has anyone found any ways of reducing the wind noise? Are there certain areas on the door/window that can be deadened? Also, has anyone found ways to reduce road noise as well? Will new tires make a huge difference? Thx in advance.
EDIT: I have a 5 door btw Maybe this would work for the 2012 Impreza (without looking at my car)? http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1857660

By looking at my car...that will not work due to the added window in front of the mirror

wind noise is a subjective thing. if you had honda then you would feel fine in the impreza, i would say the wind noise is average no better and no worse here is a simple comparison. the new lincoln suv the mkt costs over 60k in the model i drove in. Same amount of wind noise as the impreza also remember hatchbacks have more noise since they don't have trunks. tires also play a roll the yokos have a bit of road noise personally none of that bothers me like i said very subjective topic.

Definitely will be following this thread. I have a sneaking feeling that the wind noise comes from lightened materials though. Thin glass and steel is great for MPG but bad for noise damping.

Yea I am by no means saying that is bad in the Impreza. I love my car. I was just hoping maybe someone has discovered where some noise is coming from and possibly had a quick or easy fix with some deadening or dampening foam etc. I am about to do a 2000 mile trip to Colorado so I guess I am just trying to fine tune the car as much as possible before the journey.

I came from an '03 Civic. The civic transmitted all kinds of road/wheel noise, especially over wet pavement. Impreza has much less road/tire noise but highway wind noise is about the same to my ear. It's not deafening or anything but I certainly would like less.

Also reading that window and moon roof deflectors may reduce wind noise

Has anyone had any experience with the Continental PureContact w/ EcoPlus or the ExtremeContacts? Are they pretty quiet?

I noticed the wind noise a little more then my '01 Jetta TDI, but the noise coming up from the floor from kicked up salt, sand, snow, and gravel, is much more pronounced. I'm guessing there is just a lot less undercoating and insulation.

I ran Conti ExtremeContact DWS on my 2006 LGT Wagon, and loved them. Road noise wasn't bad at all. I recommend going to tirerack and reading reviews and surveys.

The OEM Yokahamas are a noisy tire imo, I only had 1200mi on them before I switched them out(for all season Kuhmo Ecsta 4x) and have definitely noticed a reduction of noise at highway speeds. Ultimately, it is subjective. Its never going to be Lexus or MB quiet unless you add sound deadening materials.

I think I have read someplace that the higher-end Crosstreks have extra sound-absorbing material on the firewall, and people are speculating that this material would be compatible with our Imprezas.
I'm sure many people would be interested in this, if it's true. |

I am also wondering since I have the OEM splash guards I get quite a bit of noise from sand/ice getting thrown up. Would investing in mudflaps quite the noise a bit from these materials hitting the plastic splash guards? I am also looking into making a rubber coating to go over the OEM spash guards to reduce the noise on snow sticking (possibly even plastidip)? Anyone tried any of this or recommendations?

I am just doing the doors, the hatch floor, and the hatch door. I would like to do the floor, but don't have the material/funds/or desire to revive the interior on a 10 month old car. I will be installing raamat/foam/mlv
I have RA mud flaps, they definitely stop rock noise, but the amount of snow/ice that builds in the wheel wells is the same as when I had nothing. |

I got the Goodyear Comfortred tires within the first week of ownership of my car. Compared to the Yokohamas they are significantly quieter, absorb the bumps better, and are phenomenal in the snow(for a all season tire). The tires have over 33K miles on them and have about 8-9/32" tread remaining. At the rate that these tires are wearing I will have to replace at about 100K. If you are looking to reduce noise I'd seriously consider a set of these tires. They made a world of difference.

Impreza - Wind Noise Service Bulletin
For the 2012 Impreza:
On 10/16/2013, Subaru released a bulletin titled: "Reed-Type" Wind Sound from Front Windshield Molding Service Bulletin # 12-155-13R Bulletin Description: This bulletin provides a procedure to eliminate a "reed-type" whistling or screeching sound which has been isolated to originating from the front windshield upper molding / weatherstrip. The sound is most prevalent while driving at highway speeds (approximately 70-75 mph) when there are crosswinds present. The procedure involves the installation of 2 small strips of EPDM foam material, one under each upper corner area of the windshield molding lip to prevent the condition from occurring. Information contained in any technical document found on the STIS web site should only be used as reference material for highly trained automotive technicians. Only automotive technicians have the training and the special tools/equipment to repair Subaru vehicles. 12-155-13R 12-155-13 |

my '13 Sport exhibited that symptom at 70-75 when I was driving in Nevada back in August. I'll have to look into this too. Thanks for sharing. |

So glad this came out! I brought mine into the dealer for this exact issue and of course it didn't make the noise while they did a test drive. They tried to tell me my mirror was loose! Taking it in next week..
