Default '98 L Legacy Wagon hard to start today?

Our '98 Legacy L wagon with EJ22 did something weird today. It had sat for two days, in the rain. When I went out to start it I cranked for a minute it would cough a few times and try to catch so then I used the gas petal. It final sputtered to life. But did not sound or smell like it was flooded? It has 84,000 on it I just replaced the spark plugs the air filter is good. So I just put fuel system cleaner in it and got fuel filter from the autoparts store for $15. The fuel filter has never been changed. How hard is it to replace? Should I know anything before doing the filter replacement?

PCV valve is a lot easier than the fuel filter if the EJ22s is in the same place as the 2.5L

The fuel filter isn't all that hard. Wait and let the car sit overnight to let the pressure in the system bleed down. After you undo the hose clamps you'll need to twist the hose back and forth on the filter to brake it loose. I find this the toughest part. Sometimes it's a bugger to get them free.

How old is your battery? Did it crank over quick or slowly? When it starts getting colder out it will tax an old battery. Just wondering.
