I just installed an 05+ STi steering wheel into my 02 WRX. was fairly straightforward. the main issues are airbag, horn and cruise control.

Here's some pics so you guys can have an idea what it all looks like in there:

02 WRX MOMO

05+ STi

02 WRX Airbag

STi airbag

02 WRX charge removed

STi charge removed

Charges from the top

Charges from the side. You can see how the dual stage charge is taller.

Fitment of 02 WRX charge into STi airbag. Okay, this was my solution. Have no idea if it would work or how properly. I figure, the single charge is enough to inflate enough of the bag in the event of something, right? Yeahhhh. Hopefully I won't ever find out. Knocks on wood.

But it makes wiring a piece of cake as it just plugs right in.

So next issue was the horn. No pictures for this. But currently I have simply stuffed a piece of wire into the horn spade in the plug of the STi wheel and into the plug of the car harness. Its the green wires on both wheel and car. Beep Beep. works fine.

Next will be cruise. i think i'll try the wire stuffing technique with that as well. see if it works. so far haven't had to cut a single wire.

Installed. I love this wheel. The smaller diameter is so much nicer.

Swapping an 05 sti wheel into 02wrx, what wire powers the horn? I swapped over bag charges to keep my wrx harness and wired it in. Also wired for cruise control with 05 controller. Just need to know where to hook up for the horn.

BUMP for the answer to this. The wire that clips on to the airbag, is that positive or negative?

(diagrams I've seen lead me to believe it's positive, but I don't want to fry something)

Sorry it's taken so long, but I'm finally re-hosting the pictures from the original post.

Check back in a little bit, and they should be working.

looks good, but why did you swap charges? 04 sti is single stage?

The charge swap was for a 2005+ wheel. I should find an old 2002 charge and swap it so that my airbags are legit, just in case.

Has anyone figured out a way to get the 05+ cruise control to work in such a way that I can get rid of the switch down on the kick panel?

i compared the charge from the 04 sti and 03 WRX... and they are exactly same build and size... only plug was different.. i felt more comfortable using the charge from the 03 which i know will charge upon impact...

Airbag is pretty direct yes.. but has to be very universal.. as a impact of 30mph.. or 80mph.... the airbag should do its job in both... i feel the charge if different.. will not change much..

i could be wrong... i hope i never find out..!

I swapped an 04 STi wheel into my 04 FXT awhile back with some help from this thread. Time has come for the STi wheel to come out and the FXT wheel is now back in. Thanks for all the info and if anyone is looking for an 04 STi wheel, I have one posted in the classifieds

Sweet! Thanks for the find. I followed the one to just hook up the cruise control with mine like 3 years ago, but I never did figure out how to get the button to work right.

Can someone please clarify: I have read that the Sti airbag switched to dual stage in 05 or 06. I would like to keep with a single stage since that is what my 04 WRX charge is meant for. I like the look and smaller diameter of the 3 spoke STi (I prefer the all back 05), but don't want to re-wire the airbag (cruise and horn I can re-wire). I'm tempted to just have the Momo re-wrapped just to be sure my airbag still works.

you can just swap your current 04 airbag charge into the 05+ steering wheel. it fits, and you it plugs straight up. Thats what I did when I installed a 07 sti steering wheel into my bugeye. install is pretty simple.

has anybody added a cruise control stalk to a JDM STi steering wheel? I bought a wheel today, and realized it doesn't have a cruise control stalk.

Unfortunately I have. I bought my 04 JDM wheel 4-5 years ago and just cut in.

What about swapping a 2005 STi steering wheel into a 2005 WRX ? Since they changed over the interior, wouldn't the WRX's air bag be dual-stage just like the 2005 STi?

Is there a way to remove the clock spring for aftermarket wheels. Where the the harness tie into the column.

I'm bringing an old ass thread back. Lol. I've been trying to research this but can't really get a straight answer. I have a 02 WRX and trying to put in a 05 Sti steering wheel. I have a 04 Sti clock spring with it. Is everything just plug and play? Can I use the 05 Sti cruise control controls? I know to turn on cruise control I still need to use the button on the dash but is there any type of wiring I need to do?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead. But out of sheer curiosity, im wondering for those who swapped their steering wheels with different model years. If you were unfortunate enough to get into a car accident, did your swapped steering wheel airbag deploy effectively/properly?
