And to your point, it mostly depends on what you want out of the Jeep. The TJ/LJ is much much simpler than the JK, less comfortable, and proven reliable. I really wanted something super simple in the modern age of everything electronic, so I went out looking for a TJ. I wish I had gotten a LJ Rubicon, but that is another discussion.

Both can be wheeled at a very high level, but the TJ/LJ will require more $ to get to the same level as the JK due to tire clearance.

Absolutely.

Having bought a JK... I still lust every time I see a LJ Rubicon. Once I finish grad school, I think I am going to find me a new toy.

The 4.0 has one benefit that no one else ever mentions.

The torque comes on way down low.

Its the beauty of an inline motor.

Of course this is also why I really wana develop an electric jeep.

you know, that is a very good idea. how much capacity do you really need for a day on the trail? plus you have the ability to keep the weight down to improve stability...

I would think trail use would suck a battery faster than the more efficient highway use. Also, batteries are heavier than ****... how would you be able to keep weight down in an electric off-road vehicle?

To give you an idea... the Tesla Roadster weights 2723 lbs. The Lotus Elise, 2006 lbs. Very similar cars save for gas vs. electric and a 700 pound difference.

yep. I used to teach people how to drive stick on mine. I'd start by having them just work the clutch; no gas. This would teach them the engagement point and how to do it properly so as to not buck the drivetrain. The motor didn't need throttle to get the thing moving...just let out the clutch and you'd inch forward.

Mine survives self washes (pressure washer) well enough.

My thought was to actually build it as offroad only. And take a cue from Tesla.

No trans, no axles, etc... v shaped I beam structures using cv shafts. 1 motor in the front 1 in the rear, planetary drives built into the motor for single speed gear reduction.

Then use the battery packs in long flat configuration which becomes the floor pan of the body section.

The clearance would be outrageous, 30% of the weight would be unsprung, while that sucks for road course, its great for wheeling, and the loss of all the motor etc... would still be lighter than a stock.. with a much lower center of gravity and higher clearance, and a completely flat bottom with nothing to hang it up... no pumpkins, exhaust.. etc.

You get the idea.

I worked it out at about $30k to build.

they actually have motors that are integrated with the wheels, with that you could get rid of shafts and just have 4 completely independent motors.

I had thought about that.. the issue is solid beam axles work WAY better than independent suspension.

I think an independent suspension would work better if you didn't have to deal with the constraints associated with driveshafts/cv joints/etc...

my buddy is selling his rig. it'd be an awesome toy for someone...a lot of really good work done to it.

Quote:
Up for sale is a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
4.7L V8 with Tow package and 3.73 gears
106k miles
clean title in hand
White/black leather
Good solid body, no rust, no leaks
Modifications:
6.75in Long arm lift with Bilstein 5125 long travel shocks and JKS quick swaybar disconnects
Upgraded transfer case to 32spline 242HD case (2wd and 4wd options instead of the factory 'quadra-trac)
Front and rear beefy Carolina Driveline Driveshafts (1350 ujoints in rear)
Front Lonestar Racing Winch Bumper with Warn M8000 winch (basically brand new)
Rear axle has Aussie Locker installed
Pro Comp 7028 wheels with 315/75/16 BFgoodrich allterrains (35's)
Iron Rock offroad Rocksliders
Bed Armor'd rock panels and some undercarriage Fuel tank has been relocated into factory spare tire area (raises fuel tank approximately 8inches for more clearance)
Transmission recently serviced and Transgo shift kit installed
Electric fan with manual in-dash switch installed to prevent overheating while crawling at slow pace
Magnaflow muffler and turndown underneath jeep, has a nice throaty tone, but not too loud.
2004 Model updated front grill
Functional Hood Louvers/Vents over engine
upgraded 160a Alternator

Jeep is mechanic owned and ive done alot of work to it over the last year:
new radiator
water pump
thermostat and housing
differential fluids up to date and heavy duty diff covers
transmission and transfer case fluid
new starter
new battery
new alternator
power steering high pressure line and new fluid
new brake pads all around
new front wheel bearings, ball joints, cv axles, tie rod ends
all suspension bushings are upgraded with lift components and relatively new
Exhaust manifold gaskets and mounting studs replaced (common problem with 4.7ls)
New headlights, all lights work
Jeep comes with a full size mounted spare and a brand new never mounted Cobra CB
No deathwobble or anything, and surprisingly little rattles for a big jeep, and pretty smooth ride.
The drivetrain is rock solid

and finally, the Not so good:
-The biggest problem with the jeep is the Heat is not working. this is a really common problem with these Jeeps, but the heater core has failed as well as the blend doors inside the HVAC box in the dash.
-The passenger rear door lock still works but has started making noise when the power locks are used
-Floor could stand to be sealed up for noise from where the fuel tank brackets were modified, its never bothered me though.
-I never bothered to swap the transfer case shifter bezels, so the shifter positions are off (ie the shifter says the jeep is in 4wd and its in 2wd). this is purely cosmetic/convenience.
-This is a big, built, heavy jeep, with a very flexy suspension and and rear locker, it doesnt drive like a sports car, it doesnt ride like a luxury car. In its current form its best served as a trail toy or a weekend camper/4x4'er
-Currently i do drive it daily and do alot of highway travel, its fine on the highway as long as you know what you're driving. My commute is part of the reason ive decided to part ways with it.
-I currently have the rear bumper off to build a rear steel bumper and tire carrier for the jeep. I can leave it off if the buyer wishes to get a rear bumper or put it back on.

Ive had this jeep a long time, and dont really need or want to sell it, just cant afford to have too many toys at once, and its time for this one to move on to someone who will use it more than i do. price is OBO probably best to email me, i work long hours during the week, thanks for looking.

I don't know if I ever mentioned but when I was in my searching/buying phase I encouraged my mother to get a JK as she was done with her LR3 and wanted something with better reliability.

Funnily enough, like me, she had fallen in love with the Sahara Tan paint and when I told her it had been discontinued, she went on the hunt, found one and bought it.

Well I just saw it for the first time the other day when I swung through Nashville for a few hours on my way to MS. First off, it looks ridiculous, especially since she put matte black JK style rims on it. It just oozes functional and military.

The new motor has a welcome amount of power but I'm just not crazy about the Pentastars at all. It just makes the car feel like any other SUV and lacks the grunt of the old I6.

Regardless, it will be mine when she tires of it in a few years. It will be nice getting my hands on a family owned vehicle that will have never been wheeled or modified.

Thinking about getting a late 90's Land Rover Disco I. I can find them for less then $3k in my area. I know they take premium fuel, get ****ty mpg, and can be expensive to maintain. Plan on using it on the weekends for 4wheeling shenanigans. Anyone here have experience with them?

Good lord. That is essentially the exact Jeep I want. I even have enough cash, but I would have to sell my car to cover the trip and not go broke over the summer. Also, no time to drive from NC to CO.
