2006 Rubicon Unlimited would be sweet... screw the JK unless you get a brand new one with the new powerplant.... 4.0's are wonderful though

I'm not planning on getting a JK; that was just a picture of the one I had as a rental.

I know that Jeeps hold their value pretty well, but still don't understand how two pretty different trim packages can be so close in price.

I'm comparing them to an STi vs WRX. You'll usually see a $4k - $5k price difference on comparable models, which I expected to see with Jeeps.

If anything, I guess it's a good thing that the Rubi's are so close to the other ones... Makes it almost a no-brainer. lol

Yeah, sounds like the Sports/Sahara's are just overpriced.

Also depends on what tops they come with, what options etc.

If you are planning on replacing axles, transmission/transfer case, etc... buying a Rubicon is pointless. The e-disconnect for the sway bars is often noted as more of a hinderance than an actual plus.

Also, pricing varies all over the place. Currently you can expect to pay about $20k for a 2006 LJ Rubicon and the Sport trim equivalent is about $2,500 less. That may be nominal, but the gap ($4-5k new) does lessen as the vehicles age.

You would have to be planning to go pretty extreme to be replacing the 44's in a Rubi, and the 241 is worth the price difference on it's own IMO.

BTW pretty sure TJ/LJ Rubi's don't have E-disco's

While I don't disagree, it's food for thought.

Oh for sure. If you are planning on going to Tons, which is the only reason to swap out 44's, then there are some decent whole rigs for sale on Pirate right now.

C'est la vie. Just one more reason to purchase an LJ Rubicon.

I thought they did have the E-disconnects...

I don't really want to spend more than $15,000, so that pretty much leaves me in the 03-05 Rubicon range. I was pretty set on one in VA, but just found out today that it sold.

I know it's purely preference, but what are your opinions on hard vs soft tops? I've riden in one with a soft top, and found it to be pretty damn noisey on the highway. I know that in the warmer weather, I'd love having the option of easily taking it down, but don't know if I could deal with the wind noise when it is up.

The soft tops got better with the JK's. I loathed the soft top on the TJ that my family owned.

I wasn't sure in E-Disco's but I couldn't find anything on them. They are a hindrance offroad for sure.

Hardtop is nice for cooler weather months as it's clearly much quieter. Yes, softtop is pretty loud, but mine is only really up with it's raining. Also, better made tops are quieter.

You don't buy a Jeep for heat and comfort.

You buy it cause you can drop the top.. take off the doors and go just about anywhere on the planet you want.

Hard top removal is a 2-3 person job at best, and the wife will hate you every time you ask her to help. Offroad you will hate it.. .makes you top heavy, gets damaged easily.

Just get a ridiculously loud stereo and pump toons.. you'll be happier anyway.

Me.. my top stays off from April-October. And I make conversion hinges for the rear tailgate so it can come off with the doors.

This is pretty much the response I expected to hear.

No wife, so unless the dog can grow some thumbs, I think I'll have to get a softy. Really, it just depends on the price... I'm not going to bypass a jeep just because of the top, as it makes as much difference to me as the color (which is minimal).

Oh, and how the hell do I believe "never been offroad" in an ad for a lifted Jeep? You're either an idiot, or an idiot.

Many people do lift them for looks and are afraid to drive them off road.

It also is usually a useless lift kit or a hacked up piece of crap.

I used to own a '90 YJ that came with a aftermarket soft top. I found it to do the job while I lived in the SF Bay Area, besides, the top was rarely on. When I moved to Lake Tahoe, I did 2 winters in the soft top, and it wasn't that bad. I found a hard top for a screaming price, came with the rear wiper and all. So glad i bought that hard top, used it during the snowy winter, then took it off for the rest of the year. Never, ever used the soft top again, I ended up throwing it in the trash. I kept my uppers for the doors, and had a bikini top, I used those if it was raining anytime when it wasn't during the snowy months.

Also, to get the hard top on and off, I installed a pulley system with rope and hooks in my garage. I backed in, placed the 4 hooks under the rear glass and by the front doors, unbolted the top, and then hoisted her up. Kept it up there out of the way for storage, and reversed the process for installing it. Took me a few minutes and I did it by myself.

Its REALLLY easy to tell if they have or haven't been offroad.. there are spots they cant clean.

Look at the bottom of all the diff's & skid plates for scratch marks, check inside the frame and on top of the trans skid plate for mud.

Also check the underside/back of engine bay hoses. They are always hot, so the mud bakes onto them, you cant get certain spots with a pressure washer to clean it up.

Look inside the air cleaner box, they usually forget to scoop the dirt outta that too.

Oh and as for the top, if you wanna quiet it down, get a sailcloth replacement they are much less noisy.

If you want I can write up a little guide on what to look for when buying a used Jeep... its pretty basic but can save your arse a lotta trouble.

+1 for an LJ Rubi. If I had 5k more to spend when I was Jeep shopping I would have gotten one for sure.

Regardless, I love my LJ more than any other vehicle I have ever owned. When I'm away from it I miss it like a pet.

So my friend's ZJ has an odd problem that a quick phone search hasn't turned much up on. It's a '98 5.9 Limited and randomly the HVAC gets stuck on heat only. You can operate everything else, the fan speed, defrost, and all the vents can be operated like normal, you just can't change the temp. If you disconnect the battery, it'll operate like normal for a bit, but then it'll crank the heat to as hot as it'll go and stay there. The common issue with these seems to be a vacuum line coming off and it defaults to defrost, but that's not at all this one's problem. I don't know if it's relevant to this problem, but it also needs to have the dash information center pulled and re-soldered because it constantly thinks the coolant sensor is bad.

No Pics, this was over 10+ years ago. The Jeep is long gone, sold it in 2003 or 2004. Sometimes I *really, really* miss my Wrangler. I live back in the Bay Area, commute 75+ miles a day, and during my commute I definitely don't miss it. On the weekends or driving on a nice sunny day, I really miss having the Jeep with no doors and top. It was an awesome rig to have in Tahoe, I had a 1" body, 2.5" suspension, and 1" shackle lift with a 9000lb warn winch + hi-lift jack mounted on the front. 33"x9.50" tall pizza pizza cutter snow tires for rubber, almost never got stuck. Didn't take it hard core wheeling, but would take it on trails often, both in the summer and winter.

Reading this thread makes me want to pick up a nice CJ or older YJ and make a weekend toy out of it.

I put the bottom edge on a carpet and lean them on a wall

There are hanger kits out there too, the TJ doors are more manageable, the JK doors are heavy bitches.

I have been drooling over these-

depends... if i am taking them off for a few hours, i just either lay them flat on the grass or against the side of my house. i ran bestop element half doors last summer, so my doors were lined up next to my hard top in the unfinished part of my basement for 5 or 6 months. i found some cheap indoor/outdoor carpet to protect the bottoms of the doors and made sure that they were in the most unlikely place for something to fall on them. if i had a garage, i would put the hooks the walls like this:

i might build a cart like this this summer: http://www.jk-forum.com/showthread.p...made-door-cart
