Does anyone know if you do a 2005-2006 STi steering wheel swap with the airbag working if you carry over the 04 WRX cruise control as in the tutorial? anyone done this before? thanks.

Is there any way to re-use the STi cruise control switch? Can the additional wires be passed through the steering column to replace the momentary switch on the WRX dash?

Thanks.

A little update since I put a '05 STi steering wheel on my '00 RS, hopefully the '04 STi cruise control wires are the same. The '03 WRX steering wheel (replaced by STi) has the same cruise control wires as my '00 cruise control switch so this should work for both. Heres how to keep the STi cruise control switch, youll need to cut the plug off of your old cruise control switch so it'd plug up. There are 5 wires on the STi one since it has the "enable cruise mode button" on the switch. Heres the what wires you need to connect.

STi cruise control switch -> Old plug ---- Function
Yellow -> White ---- Set/Coast
White -> Yellow ---- Res/Acc
Green -> Green ---- Ground

These wires might have a stripe on them but I listed their main colors. Hope this helps.

Good write up, but crimp connectors for the airbag...

I work in an airbag inflator design group (read airbag engineer) and I wouldn't mess with them (airbags). I would not generally switch airbags from year to year because generally the inflator and the airbag control module are tuned to work together and should not be used with anything but the exact part number that they were originally paired with.

However, my suspicion is that since this is a single stage inflator, you will likely be just fine. Subaru carries over a lot of technology from year to year. Newer driver's side and passenger side airbags are dual stage and are much much more application specific.

Get rid of those crappy crimps and solder the connection. MAKE SURE TO REMOVE THE CONNECTOR FROM THE AIRBAG PRIOR TO SOLDERING OR YOU MAY KILL YOURSELF.

Once again good write up, pictures are worth a thousand words.

Um, I know, but as he said there are server issues. The pics were working a few days ago. I came to print it last night and they weren't loading.

also do you know if its possible to use an 04 STi wheel with an 04 WRX clock spring without any modification, basically plug and play? i heard that on the 02, the clockspring is different but have heard that it might be the same now. can someone verify this? thanks

Default 06 STI wheel on 04 WRX w-working cruise control

I just installed an 06 STI steering wheel in my 04 WRX sedan. It came with the 06 STI clock spring / roll connector as well (which I used). I never swapped or hack any cruise control arms or wires. I am using the 06 STI CC control arm.

I followed many of the posts on here and other forums. Essentially, this is what I did:
  1. Unhooked the negative terminal on the battery
  2. Removed airbag from 04 WRX wheel
  3. Unclipped wires and unbolted 04 WRX wheel
  4. Left bolt partially on and used the yank-method to remove wheel
  5. Removed 04 WRX clock spring (what a pain!)
  6. Installed 06 STI clock spring (even bigger pain)
  7. Installed 06 STI wheel and reconnected wires
  8. Retorqued wheel and attached airbag
  9. Reconnect negative terminal to battery

Everything went pretty smooth. The main issue I had was that only two bolt holes on the 06 STI clock spring / roll connector would line up to the 04 WRX turn signal / wiper stalks. Seems to be holding and working fine even though. I get an occasional buzz or rattle from it once in awhile over bumpy roads. Once I figure out how to secure it it should be fine (either that or get 05+ stalks.) And getting the clock spring wires fished through was a challenge.

I am very happy that the cruise control and airbag connectors are the same and are plug-n-play. The difference is that the 06 STI connector has two extra pins to turn the cruise control ON/OFF from the arm. The 04 WRX is missing those since there is a button on the dash to control that function. I tested everything out and it functions the same as the stock WRX cruise control arm does.

Hopefully this is helpful to other looking for this same info...

Good luck!

Rob

its REALLY straight forward...

1. look behind the steering wheelat 3 and 9 o'clock, unscrew the torx screws...
2. take out the air bag

3. (with the steering wheel locked) grab a breaker bar and break the bolt loose (its the ONLY bolt you see.)

4. if you have the clock spring, simply undo the screws and screw the new ones in... if not, just align the new steering wheel as best as possible and slide it back in, then bolt it back up, place the airbag in place, and tighten up the torx screws
