The extra ground clearance and red tow hooks in the front facia have me wondering if it's the future Trailhawk Edition. Supposedly Jeep was planning a quick release after this vehicle's debut from what I have read.

I am really trying, but man right now that is a hard vehicle to love. I was hoping the new Cherokee was going to be a more affordable Grand Chereokee alternative, but it looks like I will be getting a '14 GC Ecodiesel...

You are worried about affordable but are going to opt for a $43k diesel instead? ($43k is the estimated cost since you have to get a limited and it has been leaked that the diesel premium is going to be $4500.)

My understanding is that the Patriot/Compass uses the CVT to get a "low range". Forester is a longitudinal drivetrain. Most transverse drivetrains send the power through the enclosed front differential first and then to the transfer case/center diff. I don't know of a single transverse mount drivetrain that has a true two speed transfer case.

I said I was hoping the new Cherokee would be a more affordable alternative to the GC. If it was, I wouldn't mind saving some cash and going in that direction, but it looks like that won't be the case. So I will opt for the Ecodiesel GC, and yes I am well aware of the price given I frequent a number of Jeep forums. (I am even part of a local group buy if you really want to be nosy) I wasn't worried, just willing to save some cash to spend in other areas if it was a viable alternative. (maybe some will think it is, I do not)

Thank you for your concerns over my financial situation, but all I said was I was hoping to see a more affordable alternative, a smaller GC essentially. I guess I know what Quentinberg007's hot button is now.

Carry on...

(and for anyone else that cares, it was verified by a Chysler employee on Jeepforums the white Cherokee is an alpha build Trailhawk)

Ha, I don't care how you spend your money. The logic was a bit funny, IMO, because I don't see a cheap FWD based CUV doing much of the same job that you'd ask of a diesel SUV.

The Cherokee is a Liberty replacement, which makes it the next Jeep down from the GC. I wanted to see what they developed (was hoping for a true XJ style replacement or something closer to a mini GC), I am going to pass. You mad bro?

Liberty was actually a pretty competent vehicle off the pavement. It wasn't an original Cherokee, but it did pretty decent. I don't think this new Cherokee will be ready for more than the most basic soft road because of the drivetrain.

Yea, it's a big disappointment from a Jeep fan's standpoint. I knew their were inherent limitations being based off the Dart chassis, but to read posts about those in the development team fighting for more wheel travel and different (Bob Sheaves derived) suspension characteristics and getting denied; I guess I always maintained some level of hope.

The same thing happened with the WK2 supposedly (reduced travel), but I think the run-away sales of that platform has dictated this shift. That being said, the WK2 will hand this thing its butt offroad.

Good luck with that. If there's one thing US automakers have always been successful at, it's forward thinking design that stays fresh for 5+ years. [/extreme sarcasm]

Seems like both of you are right, in a sense. There's a "low range mode" but it's not via a transfer case, yet it's not a CVT:

A selection of different all-wheel drive systems will be available. Jeep Active Drive I will be a basic all-wheel drive system, whle[sic] Jeep Active Drive II will include a low-range mode. Jeep Active Drive will have low-range and a rear locking differential. None of these modes will employ a transfer case – instead, there will be a planetary gearset at the differentials.
I can't quite parse that last sentence, but I know something's fishy.

Incidentally, the alien/shark-eyes look is growing on me:

What do they use to lock those planetary gearsets? Clutch packs, locking pawl?

It's ok design-wise. It's disappointing that the design looks more grocery getter than rugged. The interior is really nice though

Am I the only one disappointed by the torque ratings? 271 HP with 236 lb of torque.

Probably a pawl... it already has a wet clutch to handle lateral locking. I like the idea.. it means the driveshaft can be lighter since the extra torque is going to be limited to the diffs and axles. My only concern is what will happen when you engage 'low-range', one malfunctions and the other doesn't. I guess the PTU (basically what the Active AWD Subarus employ to send power to the rear axle) will simply slip and the TCU could throw it out of low range again to protect the PTU.

From allpar.com:
Quote:
Jeep Active Drive I uses a power transfer unit (PTU) which has yaw correction, balanced torque distribution, and brake traction control; it improves both understeer and oversteer. The system uses a fully variable wet clutch in the rear drive module, which supplies the proper amount of torque for either slippery roads or high performance, interacting with the electronic stability control (ESC) system when needed.

Jeep Active Drive II includes a two-speed PTU with torque management and a low range. Specifying low range locks the front and rear drive shafts, and adds a 2.92:1 gear reduction for better climbing; crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions are 56:1 with the four-cylinder and 47.8:1 with the V6, up to 90% higher than the Liberty. Jeep Active Drive II works with the Selec-Terrain system to modify torque distribution, calling in the stability control system as needed.

When in neutral, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee with Jeep Active Drive II disconnects the driveline for flat towing behind another vehicle.

I'd buy a Trailhawk, and I actually may depending on the Pentastar MPG ratings. I want a smaller SUV/Crossover to replace both the FJ and the RSX and drop down to one car. It doesn't seem like this is really all that bad of a compromise, but I'll reserve judgment until someone really puts one through its paces. Only thing left to see is cost. I'd bet probably slightly north of $30k.

It makes so much more sense to get a 3-4 year old CPO SUV that's depreciated to $15 or $20k and suck up the extra $500 in gas per year.

I agree, but there's nothing in that age/price range that's really compelling. If I were going to do that, it would probably be wisest to just continue on with the FJ.

You seem like you'd be a perfect candidate for a CPO 4Runner Trail Edition, no? My main gripe with it was the visibility, but since you already drive a FJ Cruiser that wouldn't be an issue at all.

Same engine, so I really don't gain anything by going 4Runner.

I'm looking for something with a decent tow rating and very good in bad weather that gets an mpg in the mid-upper 20s. I can't get a small car because of the winters around here- it just doesn't work out. Right now I live out in the sticks on top of a mountain, and my commute home is in the early morning which usually means that the roads are fairly unplowed near my house. My driveway is long and usually not plowed in the AM unless there's a lot of snow. The storm before last we got 6" of snow and I ended up getting stuck in the driveway, and I have a good set of studded snow tires.

I've really enjoyed the convenience and reliability of the FJ and don't want to lose it, but I can't justify 18mpg on an 80 mile commute. I've driven it about 3 times since the beginning of January. It's definitely not worth it to keep it, but I can't rely on the RSX.

Something like this seems to check all the boxes as long as its good, and not priced astronomically. So we'll see.

A new Cherokee is probably cheaper than a CPO 4Runner. In fact I could pretty much guarantee that in CA before even knowing the MSRP of the Cherokee.
