Exclamation World's Most Powerful Supercomputer Goes Online

Now this is a scary thought:

Quote:
This doesn't seem to have received much attention, but the world's most
powerful supercomputer entered operation recently. Comprising between 1 and
10 million CPUs (depending on whose estimates you believe), the Storm botnet
easily outperforms the currently top-ranked system, BlueGene/L, with a mere
128K CPU cores.
http://www.mail-archive.com/cryptogr.../msg07950.html

Yep, that's right. The most powerful supercomputer in the world is basically a metric ass-tonne of home PCs that have been pwnt by the Storm trojan.

hehe no one actually read that link.

Anyways, the author of the link posted made some pretty baseless assumptions anyways. Not to mention a cluster with interlinks capable of sustained throughput of say 256kbps or so is going to be pretty useless for doing anything other then aggregating that 256kbps into a 256gbps DDoS attack.

Well, his e-mail (Dr Guttman is a well-known computer scientist at the University of Auckland) was intended to point out the size of the botnet, rather than its power or anything. Some even peg it at up to 50 million PCs.

Hell, I'm sure there are more 'powerful' distributed computing efforts.

for a well known computer scientist, I thought his presumption that 10 million pcs powering off and on had a tangible affect on the power grid was interesting. Especially since you know, the botnet is across the... entire... world... where the power consuption even firing up a CRT monitor is but a drop in the bucket.

But whatever.

I liked the "1 million RMAs" comment myself.

HWD, further clarification? You think that the number of infected PCs are overestimated?

Ask him where he got his numbers from...

He will give you a ?que? face.. or he will say he is basing it off of other peoples numbers.

Haha, the numbers put out in this article are total bunk. Supercomputers are measured in MIPS or TFLOPS, not in number of processors. This thing couldn't hope to touch the performance of something like BlueGene/L.

Hell, BlueGene/L is up to 360 TeraFLOPS, and the new BlueGene/P is apparently configurable to up to 3 PetaFLOPS.

I'd like to see any combination of home PCs touch that... hell, if you clustered every home PC in the United States you might not get the level of actual performance over time that you'd see with BlueGene/P.
