Lightbulb Has anyone rewrapped their steering wheel?

So I was looking around for a new steering wheel because MY04's got really worn out. I didn't care so much about removing the air bag but I really wanted to keep the cruise control where it is. And so I started looking for wraps and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a website where you got yours? I looked at

https://www.leatherseats.com

http://www.wheelskins.com/

I'm not sure which would be better and if this is at all a good option in the first place. Any info or recommendations would be appreciated, and yes, I searched around.

I am planning on removing the stock plasticky stuff on the outside of the wheel and wrap it with leather and stitch it up.

It's not somethiing that you really buy, you may have to buy some materials, but other than that you make it yourself.

I did a Wheelskins wrap on my Mustang's stock wheel. It has a pretty thin rim, so adding the leather wrap helped beef it up a bit.

Not sure how hard it would be to get a professional looking/feeling result if you remove the plasticky wheel material and try to recreate it yourself with leather. That's going to be a bit more of a challenge than just putting on a Wheelskins cover.

Could you explain this a bit more? Unless you have a plastic covered wheel, then I don't know how this would work on WRX wheel. Do you have any pics?

Hey that wheel wrap looks great. Did you take off the old cover or just wrap over it. Red stitching looks great

wheelskins are very nice product, the shop I used to work @ sold the crap out of them.

If there is damage, the wheel skin won't help. They go over the stock wheel. So if your stocker is damaged, then when the Wheelskin is stretch & laced, the imperfections will show as "dimples" (think hail damage on a heavy woman's thighs <shudder>)

if its in good shape & you like the stock wheel/airbag.. skin it.

Did the re-dying remove the worn out grooves?

dyeing changes color it doesn't magically fix deterioration or damage... kinda logical really.

I was actually just wondering if anyone knew how the rewrapping done by professional companies was done, or knew of any tutorials. I spent like the entire night googling it, found a lot of suede/alcantra wrapping on interiors (mostly VW's) but nothing on steering wheels.

As TXwrxWagon said, the Wheelskins covers just go on over the stock wheel. My model year of Mustang GT didn't come with a leather wheel, and the rubber/plastic stock wheel had a pretty narrow rim - just didn't feel good in my hands. Adding the Wheelskins cover thickened it up so it's more comparable to the Subaru's wheel and my CTS-V's wheel. And I got red-stitched shifter and e-brake boots from Redlinegoods.com, so I've got the whole black-and-red theme goin' now.

They have thread colors to match all of their leather colors. By default they'll send you thread to match the leather, but if you ask they'll send you any other color thread you want.

I thought that RaceCompEngineering did this for a while, and sold the wheel outters for about 300.

You might want to contact those guys? That is about the only people I have seen offer it as a service, and they did sell them, for awhile.

the wheelskins "lace" on meaning, yeah its kinda like sewing it on yourself...but all the holes are pre-punched & aligned. You lace, like a shoe, the provided thread through & then at the end you cinch up the cover tight & then tie it off & tuck the lace ends under the cover.
