Generally I drive between 55-65mph on the regular "highway" but on the interstate 65-80mph which quickly decreases my efficiency
A second oil change by 8k miles? What am I missing? First oil change at 3750 with the second at roughly 11000. Per subaru.

Not according to my book which says first oil change at 7500

It's possible. 500 miles divided by 14.5 gallons (the capacity of our gas tanks) = 34.5 MPG. So it can be done with highway driving on a road trip, but the car would be running on fumes at that point.

Many of us do an early oil change, and then also use a shorter Oil Change Interval (OCI) than 7.5k miles. I did my first oil change at 1700 miles (to flush our wear metals from the break-in), and then did my 2nd oil change at around 6.5k miles because I was using a 5k mile OCI.

I've seen it both ways.....I believe it's listed somewhere that the first should be done at 3750. I do believe that it's overkill having an oil changed before 3k. To each their own though. If you have the oil and don't mind using it, go for the gusto.

I don't believe this is true. Even my dealer when they tried to get me to schedule my first oil change when I bought the car, they said not until 7500...confirmed in the owners manual. However, yes, some people on here decided to change their factory fill early, which is fine.

the service manual states first change at 7500

unless you are operating in severe conditions (which most of us technically are) then 3750

My dealer did the first oil change at 3,000 miles and it was free. Since then, I have been trying to keep a 3,750/4 Month interval. So far it's worked OK for me since most the driving is "city type" (lots of short trips) and falls under the severe condition definition.

i now am at 8500 miles, and i can't say my mileage has gotten appreciably better after the first couple thousand miles. i changed my oil roughly 2600 and 7500.

what i have found (after figuring out that i was losing a lot of efficiency by leaving my vent mode in defrost) is that my mileage is highly correlated to my average speed for the tank. my typical 80/20 city/hwy tank averaging about 23MPH yields me about 26-27MPG. if i'm up near 28-30MPH average (closer to a 40/60 split), i get close to 30MPG.

as everyone else has stated: this cars mileage is horrible during the warm up phase. i've tracked my cars suburbia stop and go driving (15-20MPH average) after tanking up, but the car is warm, the computer will give me something in the 27-28MPG range, or close to EPA city (accounting for the ~1.5-2 MPG overprediction by the computer and ~1MPG lost due to the underestimating Odometer)

that being said, i am surprised by the folks seeing nothing better than 30MPG for 60-65MPH driving on the highway: did all of you guys get the ECU updates done on your cars? lots of hills on these highway driving miles.

of course, if i drive over 70MPH, my mileage plummets. but for 60-65MPH, i see high 30s.

My dealer gives me two oil changes a year free. I'm currently at 3k miles and had the car since Nov 23, at that pace two a year should work out nice. Plan on having the oil done at 3750 and then every 7500 there after.

My dealer has it listed on the website that you do the first at roughly 3,750 then the next at 7500. After that you begin the changes every 7,500 so my next will be at 15,000. If I get a chance I will post an image of the recommended maintenance.

Also on the subject of MPG: I through out the week achieved between 34-34.5 MPG (according to the meter on the vehicle which we all know can be inaccurate.
So I did this by Hand for a rough estimate. According to mapquest I travel 35-36 miles to work so we will say 72 miles a day just to be on the high side. I also Gas up during the day and drive across town at least 3 miles to get home in stop and go traffic before going in for 3rd shift so we will stick with the 72 to even it out.
Now I calculate I drive about 360 + or - miles a week to work and back on a highway that fluxuates between 55-35 mph while going through towns. The trip also consists of many hills as I do live in New England, and of course those pesky Vermonters who like to drive exactly if not 5 under the limit.
Now lets divide the 14.5 gallon tank by 4 which is 3.625 so we will round to 3.63 for an easy number. I consume 3/4 of a tank by the time I roll back into the driveway on saturday morning, so that is 10.89 gallons. 360 divided by 10.89 comes out to be roughly 33.1 MPG.
This number is not too far off from what the car says and considering the drive it is not too bad of a number. Unfortunately once I hit 1/4 tank by Saturday I no longer drive the highway so my fuel economy goes down, living in a small "city" and what not.
I am going to keep track of the mileage after I return from my four day weekend to get an accurate number with my actual miles but I was trying to show that it is in fact possible to get close to the EPA rating.
I should have been more specific in my first post, but will post again when I calculate my mileage in a week or so.

just 2 a year. man, i got mine in april 2012 and my car is at 21K, so roughly 4 a year and they were all free. the car came with a 25K/2year free oil changes. looks like its only going to be a year or less. but i guess you got the better deal since i am limited to at least 2 years.

Man... you guys and your free oil changes. My dealer wouldn't even entertain the thought of discussing an oil change package onto the price, much less giving free oil changes.

Then again, perhaps it was just as well. I'd read of some very negative reviews of their service department (and their parent company), so I decided to steer clear of them. I'm very happy with the local mechanic that I'm with now - he's very knowledgeable and cares for others' cars just like his own. He's even given me tips and helped me troubleshoot a noise that had been annoying the crap out of me.

Yeah we'll I over paid for the car so they got their money up front I guess. They also have a 250k/10 yr limited power train warranty as well but I called yesterday to read get a copy of the details. I know I have to have the service pertaining to the drivetrain at the dealer just gotta do the math to see if that works for me. I don't mind changing oil and plugs so if it doesn't make financial sense then Ill stick to my free oil changes and do the rest myself.

I think anybody is capable of doing an oil change. Learning to do your own gives you peace of mind good stuff was used.

However, if you get em for free, more power to ya. ...tho i bet you paid a little extra for the car in that case, whether you know it or not.

I started doing my own oil changes on my subie and will never pay for another oil change in my life (besides the oil/filter obviously, or until too old and decrepid)

Good point. I bought my Impreza from Van Bortel Subaru, near Rochester, NY.

http://www.vanbortelsubaru.net/index.htm

They are consistently one of the top Subaru dealerships in the country. It takes me 30 minutes to get to Van Bortel from my home, vs. another less reputable Subaru dealership that's less than 10 minutes away. After my VW TDI fiasco, I was willing to travel to buy from the best dealership.

Van Bortel uses a no-dicker-sticker approach to pricing. Their pricing is extremely competitive. I know from what others have said they paid for their cars that Van Bortel's pricing is low. There's certainly negotiating on your trade-in, but I didn't trade in a car when I bought my Impreza (I sold my VW TDI myself for much more than Van Bortel or the Ford dealership would pay).

Anyway, Van Bortel does not provide "free" oil changes (I asked, as the first 30k miles of service is provided as part of the VW ownership experience). You can buy a service package from Van Bortel, but I passed because I plan to do most of my own preventive maintenance.

I'm sure one reason Van Bortel's prices are so low is because they don't provide free oil changes. And also because they move a large volume of cars.

i think beyond the issues noted above, another reason i do my own oil change is time and convenience: it's much easier for me to take 45 minutes (that's giving it tons of time to stop dripping completely) on a weekend to do it in my garage, than schedule a time or go somewhere to wait for someone to do it for me.

I hear ya......but the wife just drives my Tacoma and drop the car off and we roll out. I'm with you though, I hate waiting.

Tabulating my hand calculated mpg for my road trip.
I got my best mpg so far of 38.9MPG, used 2.26 gallons over 88miles
Country roads of north east pa and also erie pa, driving speed limit in the 40s/50s
1 quick 65mph on i90W.

Trip home averaged 26.1 then again I was doing 75 with a minimum of 60 but only
for a small stretch.

Mileage confirmed via gps

Regular fuel, front 36 rear 35psi.

Question, how come you run your tires at that pressure?

because you lose psi in winter, car feels better with those psi, personal preference, I have always found oem recommend psi to make tires squishy I don't know if that word actually translates what I am trying to say. 36/35 and 37/36 are my personal favorite psi, I did run 35/34 for a bit but found in snow I prefered a psi higher
