STi vs EVO VII RS Sprint vs Honda 2000 vs LOTUS ELITE & more!!!
Get the latest edition of EVO magazine at your book store. It compares Europe's 11 greatest driving machines, and a tire test of 8 top tires.
Impreza STi Type UK : 261hp, 6 speed, 0-60 5.8 sec, ABS, A/C, PW, price as tested UK 27,495. EVO VII RS Sprint : 320hp, 5 speed, 0-60 5.1 sec, no ABS, no A/C, no PW, price as tested UK 25,995. Compare this to the regular English WRX at UK 21,995. When comparing prices, the usual US$ to UK$ conversion factor doesn't apply because Jap cars in the UK aren't that much different than the US because of import duties. etc. Analysis: US STi in 2003 would cost approx. $28,995 with 17" wheels, 261hp, and not really that much faster. Brakes, suspension, tranny, are all better. SUMMARY COMPARISON: Mini Cooper S took 1st place. Remember, English magazine.

They're here. They've been here for months. They are hard to find at MSRP, though (many places in SoCal have $3,000-$6,000 markup ).
We're getting one from out of state in about 5 months, deposit was paid in May. |

Just checked carpoint and Edmunds...
Looks like the S is here now. I thought I saw a Yellow Cooper S about a week ago. That front Scoop is pretty obvious. |

The Mini Cooper S is here. I saw one yesterday in Boston. Light blue with a black top. Distinct hood scoop.

At Home Depot yesterday there was a Black Regular Mini with a white top and the English flag was painted in the top like on the Old Mini's.
Is that an option? |

American flags, British flags, and checkered flags as options you can order or have your dealer put on later (along with black or white hood stripes). Also a checkered flag with the Mini Cooper S's "twisty road red S" logo overlayed across the roof as an aftermarket item. I'll see if I can track down the pic... Edit: Found it! Why am I having a hard time believing that the UK STi only does 0-60 in 5.8 secs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the normal US WRXs do stock? Even if they mean 60kph, that still wouldn't make sense.

like everything else, 0-60 times are always dependant on the driver... i've heard jdm sti v.7's hit 0-60 in the mid 4's, but that the sti type-uk does it in a little over 5... and who knows, maybe the sti they tested only had a few miles on it...

I obviously know more about the car than you do... And I saw the Cooper S at my local dealer like 2 and a half months ago (yes, I was surprized) Anyway, I drove the N/A, and ALMOST drove the S (I can stop by the dealer any time I want to drive it since they keep test drive cars, but I have no need to do so). The only suspension difference between the S and a standard model are 10% stiffer springs. The one I drove actually had upgraded wheels and tires (All-season performance tires) and it still handled worse than my car... Of course the S will be alot faster than my car, but its not much faster than the RS... And I can plop an EJ25 into my car for around $1k and toss on an exhaust and intake and be faster than the S. I just dont have any reason to get a cooper... |

Faster?
Faster? I guess you mean in a straight line...
the Cooper S is going to be an absolute menace on the autox course. -- ConeMasher |

Arn't the new mini's like a whole 1000 pounds heavier then the old ones? I'm not to impressed by a car the length of a geo metro that weighs like 2,600 pounds.

Mini ho-hum
I read the article and was very unimpressed with the Mini.
I thought - if this car was made in Detroit or Japan, they would never stop ragging on it. It was the slowest by far, but they were trying to convince you that it had some sort of ineffible quality. British mags always do that when they're trying to figure out how and Austin Rover is better than an M5 or some such nonsense. Of course the mini is small, light and agile...so's a civic or a ford focus, so what? I believe the reality is this cars appeal is it's cuteness and Anglo nostalgia. I'll be fair though and admit I can't say for sure until I drive one, but....I take British mag comments about this car with giant-ass pillars of salt. |
