Help me turbo my Outback
Hey all, I probably just need you to actually talk some sense into me.
I'm currently driving my '96 Outback from San Ramon to Hayward at least 3 times a week. I am a student and don't have much money to really work with but if things came together for cheap enough I would consider doing this. My car is super reliable and gets decent mileage. I have done all my own maintenance and big jobs like clutches and headgaskets and whatnot. It currently has 265k miles and shows no real signs of wear. It doesn't eat oil etc. Here's a short list of what I need. The goal would be no more than 5psi on stock everything. Oh and budget would be $500 or less. Turbo crossmember or modified stock '06 wrx td04 (has 5psi wastegate?) '06 wrx tmic/recirc valve Exhaust Intake bits oil feed and drain water feed and drain I'm kicking myself right now for not keeping a vf10 I had and sold since that would work great here. Not sure what I would do about exhaust since my car has single port headers. Maybe look for a set of subachad up and down-pipes. I feel like I just got bit by the turbo bug again.

seriously people.....who can hook me up with a tmic and help me solve my exhaust problem? This is an ej22 if it helps.
Anybody out there that can fabricate? I can pay but obviously not much. |

You would make about the same amount of power if you just went with a high compression build (10.5:1 roughly). 5psi isn't much.
Here is what you need: EJ251/3 (Phase 2) block + EJ25 head gasket Your stock heads + Delta cams That should put you in the 180-200 hp range with 200+ torque. |

In all honesty I would sooner swap a full ej25 in than do the frankenmotor. |

What kind of shape is your td04 in and what mileage? I assume it is the pre-06? |

Can anybody here weld? I was thinking maybe it would be possible to hack the flanges off my stock header and swap them onto a dual port header. I know it's not ideal but this is for a simple 5psi setup

Not sure if anybody is paying attention to this but...
I helped a guy swap an EJ22 for en EJ18 and have a chance to take his EJ18 heads for free. I am thinking of swapping the EJ18 heads onto my EJ22 block and maybe getting the cams ground by Delta. This would be a lot easier and cheaper than a turbo build. It would also pass a smog test (I think). I would probably try a little port/polish work on the heads as well. Not sure if I would change the exhaust at all. I would maybe change out catback for the spintech sitting in my garage and clean up the stock headers a little bit. I just need to look into what headgaskets to use and what CR I will end up with. |

I have a stock header for a turbo that would fit on the ej18 heads and I would give it to you if you build a turbo motor.

Thanks man, if I go with ej18 heads I don't think I will be turboing it. I might want the manifold though to see if I can use it and adapt it to my stock exhaust

I am almost done acquiring parts. Here is my list:
'04 wrx hood scoop '07 wrx TD04 '07 wrx TMIC '05 STi BPV (with elbow and hose) JC Sports UP JC Sports DP Tial 44mm EWG (for sale soon) Mid-pipe Total cost so far including shipping is $440 but I will be selling the EWG and getting the pipes patched up. I should maybe come out $100 ahead after that which means total cost would be $340 for everything so far. That leaves me $160 in my budget. Car already has: '02 wrx oil pump '07 wrx fuel pump Things left to do: -Oil lines (will probably T into oil pressure sender) -Water lines (will probably do the throttle body bypass and use this as feed and return) (If I find out this doesn't flow enough water I will T into heater core hoses) -Buy gaskets for exhaust and turbo. |

for my Obs turbo, i used a t off the oil pressure sender, and for the oil return, i bought another driver sides valve cover(that has the oil filler spout), and i welded a hose barb onto a piece of metal that screws directly where the oil filler spout screws into. it worked perfect! make sure you use hydrolic hose for the oil return, or else the rubber will desintegrate! for the cooling, i didnt even hook it up coolant lines to the turbo....i might someday, but egt's stay below 900 degrees at the turbo...so for now its fine.

This is EXACTLY what I did and I LOVE IT. I used Delta's Torque Grind and also swapped the 4EAT out for a 2010 5MT with 3.9 final drive with Exedy stage 1 organic clutch. Tons of low end power. |
