Default my father is going to build a new house

i mean HE is going to build a new house...

like hammering nails and running wires and stuff

my father is NOT a blue collar guy, he is an investment banker, republican, bush supporter, housewife, 2 kids, drinks single malt scotch on saturdays

and he plans to build a new house

he did, finish the basement himself, so i'll give him that, but i don't know if he's up to building a house after work and on weekends...

I saw one of the most pristine classic Corvette's restored and modified by a guy who was a plumber!! You may be surprised what some people can accomplish.

The house I used to live in was built by the first guy to live in it. Much more sturdy and well built then the $450k POS we have now.

He's insane. Tell him to watch the Dream House episode on TLC/HGTV about the guy who tried to be the gen contractor on his custom house. It took the bastard like 1 1/2 years. Especially hilarious was when the cabinet makers tried to hang the kitchen cabinets... The effin walls were made of foam!!

My brother-in-law built his own house, but he's been in construction for the past 10 years. It took him for freakin' ever to build that thing only working nights and weekends. I think the hardest part for him was handling the general contractor stuff to make sure things were ordered on time and inspections were done in time and the right order.

They have a nice house now, but it was a lot more work than he expected.

yeah, but you'll find well over half the cost of a house goes into labor. DIY saves a TON

Have him hire someone and ifhe wants to pretend have him follow them around and watch how it is done. It will take them longer but it beats screwing it up yourself and not having anyone else to blame.

He needs to dedicate some of his time to Habitat for Humanities. He can help build a small house to learn the basics and even see if wants to take on such a large challenge for himself.

i'm not doubting his abilities
the finished basement is more well built than the rest of the house, and that's the part that he did
and he has, in addition to his major in business, he has a minor in drafting or building design or something

and i don't think he expects to have it done any time soon, honestly i think he'd be happy to be done w/ it in less than 4 yrs

he plans to continue living in our current house until it's completed

i think his big issue is, while he was finishing the basement, when he came home from work he would go do that and it made him happy to be constantly busy like that, doing that, and i think he expects building a house to be the same as framing walls and laying drywall, and all of what goes into finishing the basment, but i'm more concerned that he will have problems w/ getting the inspections done, and having the people come in and make sure things are up to code, the building is sound, etc

there's just like 100x more stuff that goes into building an entire house that doesn't go into finishing a basement

My dad built a house about 15 years ago. I was pretty young, but I did help, as did my older brother. Mostly, though, it was just my dad and my grandpa(who was in his mid-70's at the time). My dad is a piping designer and he also drew up the plans for the house himself(had them approved by an architect that works for him). Took about 16 months from the time he started until we moved in. He was working full-time M-F 8-5:00 while he built it(evenings and weekends for the house). We hired an excavator, foundation/concrete, plumbing and drywall. Everything else we did ourselves.

That's the hardest part, dealing with the city and the codes. That's all out of your hands. If an inspector gets rubbed the wrong way, you're screwed. They can make it real difficult. And the inspectors can dictate the pace.

Nice house Charge.

Thanks...doesn't look so hot there. That was back in 2001 I think. My mom has already had him re-do a huge portion of it. The front porch is completely re-done(we'd pulled the railings in that picture and some of the plants out front).

The nice part is the 3-car garage sticking out the rear back there.

Built it back in 1990 with a $140,000 construction loan. House was appraised at $235,000 about 1 year after it was completed. It's only like 3300 sq/ft, so it's not huge. 1.25 acre lot, mostly wooded in the rear.

You can save an insane amount of money building it yourself, if you have the time and the gumption. It was, admittedly, very trying on my parents' relationship.

OMG, 235K is peanuts in SoCal. What's it valued at today?

Not rich, just what we have to put up with. Seriously, 235K couldn't buy you a shack in SoCal, literally. Median value here is 575K... choke on that. I kid you not.

being "rich" has nothing to do with house "values" or appraisals in your area.
if you think owning a 235K house means youre not rich, you have lost all sense of reality. there are degrees to wealth of course [not going into the whole wealth does not equal rich debate now], but if you own a home at all, youre already better off than many folks around the country.
just because you dont have a 1 million dollar home, does not mean youre not rich.
being my own devils advocate, i suppose it is a relative term, and quite subjective at that.

I kinda follow what you're trying to say, but you don't understand what I'm saying. For ex. my wife makes ex-dollars per/yr in CA. Someone in the same position in Georgia makes 20% less, adjusted for cost of living. However, median home values in SoCal are 575K, but in Georgia the median value is 125K. Now tell me whos rich again?

if your point is that the georgian has more expendable income, relatively, then yes, point made and understood. it also means, you did not understand my last post at all.
but alas, it is 2 am, and i have several pages of homework left to do, thus this conversation is over dot dot dot for now
cheers

Jesus. I swear I need to go work in a large city for a few years whilst living in a catdboard box, then come back home a build a freaking mansion.

My mom's best friend recently bought a 150 year old newly renovated ELEVEN bedroom, 3 story house, with finished basement and attic, and a FIVE car garage sitting on 1.5 acres, for $275k. It has a goddamn EIGHT foot long single pane of glass bent into a 1/2 octagonal shape wrapped around the breakfast nook, and 3 working dumbwaiters. Every closet in the house turn on the light when you open the door too.

Oh, and did I mention the NINE bathrooms? The master bath having a 4 person hottub, LARGE bathtub (think Scarface), HUGE shower, 2 person sauna, and a mother ****ing bidet. Two of the bathrooms actually hae urinals

Oh and it has a HUGE single room bomb shelter under the basement. It's not wired for electricty though.

She's opening it as a bed and breakfast soon.

</threadjack>

sorry
