Default Audi A8 Hybrid ‘technology concept’ revealed, production model due in 2011

Quote:
As reported yesterday, Audi today unveiled its new A8 Hybrid concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. While it’s known as a ‘technology concept’ for now, this is most likely the same model that will enter production and go on sale by late 2011.

Power comes from a 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder engine making 211-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The enine is mated to an electric-motor (fueled by a lithium-ion battery pack) making 45-hp and a peak torque of 156 lb-ft. Working together the two systems produce 245-hp and a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. That allows the Audi A8 Hybrid to go from 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 146 mph.

Audi says that even with those performance figures, the A8 Hybrid will return an estimated fuel-economy of 38 U.S. mpg. Audi says that the A8 Hybrid is also capable of running on electric-mode at speeds of up to 40 mph for more than 1.2 miles.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the Lexus LS Hybrid, BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid have met their competitor from Ingolstadt.

Hit the jump for the press release and the high-res image gallery.

I'm surprised with that kind of output they wouldn't put that engine in the a4 of a6. I guess they needed something to compete in the luxury field. Looking forward to reviews and to where else that engine will end up.

I think that the 2.0L Turbo engine is great and perfect to match with a hybrid setup. An option of the 3.0L TFSI would be a nice option as well. However, we have yet to see an Audi hybrid surface in the U.S. And they keep changing their mind if they will bring them over or not. I have to believe that a DI 4 cylinder would help reduce the premium for this vehicle as opposed to the V8 BMW and Lexus hybrids. However, even if this vehicle only got 35 MPG I think that it would still turn alot of heads.

Good Job Audi! You have nearly identical performance and mileage figures to the 2004 Hybrid Accord. Certainly more complex technology, but nothing that wasn't being accomplished 6 years ago.

1. The Accord hybrid was a midsize. A8 is a fullsize.
2. Accord hybrid was FWD. This A8 is AWD.
3. Accord hybrid returned EPA figures of 22 to 24 in the city and 31-32 Hwy. depending on MY. An average of 26 or 28 MPG, again depending on MY. Thus I would say and estimate of 38 MPG for the A8 is pretty good even if it is an average, city, or highway rating.
4. Luxury cars generally have more features than bread and butter sedans, making them heavier. Weight reduces fuel economy.
5. No fullsize sedan on today's market could touch this fuel economy #.

I agree with all your objectives perspectives SLegacy99. I brought up the Accord Hybrid because it is the closest car I could think of that had similar performance numbers and when I was looking to purchase in 2004-2005, the EPA City/HWay was 30 and 37. Many people were getting much better than that. The Accord Hybrid just wasn't refined enough for the 32k price tag.

I'm thinking this A8 Concept is going to be north of $80000 and I'd expect the technology to be better than that of a Prius. I recently saw a chart that showed the ingredients that would be required to meet yearly sales goals of Electric and Hybrid cars. It also had the price points of those cars and how many would be sold at those price points. I'm guessing this Audi will compete with the Lexus LS Hybrid or fill a niche between the GS and LS?

But I can't understand why this powertrain is not in the TL. That would justify the cost.

38 mpg in a full size car is 'nearly identical' to 25-28 mpg in a midsizer in the same way that my height is nearly identical to 9 ft.

Wow I really opened a can of worms on this one. When I was looking at the Accord Hybrid, I believe the window sticker said 30 and 37. I agree with this being a full size car that 38 is great mileage, but the powertrain just isn't that incredible. A 2 litre motor in an A8? I just think folks who drop the kind of money this car will probably cost will want more than a little motor. Would a more fair comparison be with a Fisker Karma?

What I do like is how the manufacturers are probing the depths of consumer acceptability across every segment. This car asks the question of how customers will accept a turbo 2.0 litre motor that makes less power than a Subaru 2.0 turbo, that makes strong torque and even stronger torque with the electric motor addition.

SLegacy99, you bring up a real good point about the TL. I think there could be some real success with the Accord Hybrid Setup in the TL, but the tranny would have to be smoothed out. The Accord Hybrid tranny would make some real loud thuds and clunks when backing off the accelerator as it upshifted.

I'm all for hybrids. My 05' Civic is going in next week for its 10,000 mile oil change at 120,000 miles. It still has the original 12v battery, original rotors and brakepads, original windshield wipers, tires were replaced at 80,000 miles and no problems with the hybrid battery or drive system. The car also has a timing chain, so no belt to replace. Cheap to keep.
When it goes in next week, it will get windshield wipers, 12v battery, oil and filter. Just waiting for my Volt.

What kind of mileage do you get in that?

Audi isn't really probing, the A8 has always been available with a wide range of engines.

Over the life of the car it has averaged just under 47mpg. In the winter, I get around 44mpg and in the summer I get around 50mpg. If I keep it under 60mph on the flats, the mileage is close to 60mpg. My commute is rather ideal for this kind of hybrid based on terrain, traffic and speeds. My best tank ever was after hurricane Katrina. I drove that car over 730 miles on 12.5 gallons of gas. I just did the speed limit and practiced some pulse and glide.
