Accident!!Do I need to take the turbo off before taking the car to the repair shop?
As some of you may know, Hiroshi and I were in an accident on the way to the photoshoot. My car got pretty ****ed up. The entire front is gone and so is the hood. The radiator has been pushed into the belts and was leaking fluid. I had to tow it home but now I'm worried that when I have it towed to a place to get the insurance work done, they will hassle me about the turbo.
IF I do need to take the turbo off I'm going to need alot of help guys. I'll need to borrow (or even buy off of you) the stock piping from the headers back. I would also like the stock oil pan and would like some help with removing the turbo. Here are some pics of the car in the garage. you cant see the front damage that well in the pictures but the headlights are all cracked, the corners broke off, the bumper has been ripped apart in one spot and is just demolished. the driver side fog light has been killed. the grill was destroyed. the hood scoop and vents look to be in perfect condition- i took off the vents because i dont want them to keep them and give me stock. Some of the pics are ugly because I increased the brightness and contrast so the damage is more visible....

take a look at how far the radiator fluid tank was pushed (yes its touching the engine). i also cant get the headlight bulbs out because they have been pushed pretty far back as well.

i dont know how much its going to cost to fix this. when some lady backed up into my fender/door it cost 1700. i think this might be a couple more Ks. i dont think its in bad enough shape that its totalled.

That is exactly the type of damage I incurred when my cousin crashed my WRX into a minivan with the exception of the passenger side being fine. The driver side crumple zone was dust and the radiator was pushed into the engine. It's costing my cousin $8800 to fix it since he let his insurance lapse (without letting me know). This is for the new WRX though so you may not have the same lead time for parts or hassle trying to get parts. I've been waiting over a week to get my parts in and work begins on it this monday. My car looks almost exactly like your car right now so expect at worse case, 8,000 bucks. Good luck. Insurance won't give you much of a hassle with the car.

Andrew,
Try this place down in Santa Cruz, CARMAT. Ask for Tom Anker and say I (Bill Knose) recommended this place to you. Just mention I had a Silver Impreza RS if her forgets. They are pretty awesome down there and they probably won't hassle you about the Turbo. Here is the info: Tom Anker 1-831-464-0338 1650 Mansfield Street Santa Cruz, CA 95052 Hope this helps, Bill |

Which accident was this? I had to quickly stop so I didnt hit the subbie in front of me (within an inch) and ended up getting tagged in the rear (hearing several others). Checked out my car around the corner and it all looked fine... was this the same accident or?
Looked for the guys at the meet but couldnt be sure who else it was. |

Aww man.. What exactly happened? How fast were the cars going? At least is seems like your Impreza held up pretty well. Let me know if you want to borrow any stock parts. I got: midpipe, muffler, lights, intake box, etc...
Mike PS- On the bright side, maybe it's time for a cf or aluminum hood. Last edited by MagicMT; 07-28-2001 at 11:47 PM. |

well this was at Sunset and Irving or whatever the streets were called. All of a sudden people started to brake hard and it ended up that the guys in back had to slam on their brakes harder which made the tires skid. The guy in front of me skid a little and i think just BARELY missed the guy in front of him but when i hit him he said he could have swore he heard two hits (front and rear). i honestly dont know the speed ~10mph. since my car is lowered and i was sort of diving down my car went pretty much under his bumper and thats why my hood and everything was destroyed.... his car only needs a new rear bumper and a muffler.
i am VERY disappointed in the SFPD. He and I had never been in an accident like this and I read my insurance card and it said to immediately call the police. They said that they wont send anyone out and said good bye (the hell? not even to help tell us what to do next?). i eventually got a hold of my insurance company and they gave me some numbers for some tow trucks. edit: IF the damage is 8800 for my car isnt that mroe than half the value of it? i dont think its that much but theres no telling what else was damaged.... edit: MagicMT can they put on a CF/aluminum hood instead of stocker? Whoa, SFPD sucks! That's how I got into my accident too. People started braking HARD in front of me, so I braked hard and luckily didn't touch the car in front of me. I heard tire sqealing behind me. She couldn't stop in time so she tried to swerve, but still hit the left side of my car, breaking off my mirror and scraping the left side of my car... People, learn from our accidents and DON'T DRIVE SO CLOSE TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU. So what if people cut you? It'll slow you down by like 5-10 mins. It's better than getting hit. Be careful out there folks!

Sorry dude,
If it costs a lot I guess it might be worth just getting rid of the car, but if insurance covers it then it shouldn't be to bad. When I had my bad accident the total bill was quite high but I still got it done. Hope all goes well. |

im totally letting the insurance do this, no worries there. i know they are going to say im at fault and my rates will go up but so what, i cant afford 6k+ on my car. this is why i have insurance. if they decide its totalled then good, ill sell the turbo/suspension/everything else and get a WRX with a damn STICK. if not then so what, i still get to keep my RS-T that ive put so many hours into.

OMG Andrew.....Hope you are ok physically!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who did you hit and his/she ok also? I heard the tires on the pavement at full lock and the hit (glass). Here is what I experienced:
North on Sunset avenue coming to the intersection of Sunset and Irving roughly 35mph and anticipatining a right turn onto Irving. Silver rex in front and behind me. All is good, as it should be but, suddenly ahead I saw that there was heavy braking. The light had changed. I must admit that everyone was in close quarters. I broke hard and looked behind me thought (outloud), "Ok, this rex will be fine behind me as he has "better" brakes than I do"....no I didn't I said "SHIIIIIIIIIIT". I came to a stop and heard a screach from tires....looked in my rear view mirror to anticipate a hard boody bumb from behind but to my great relief.....the silver rex behind me had stoped with plenty of room to spare. Then a split second later after hearing the screach I heard GLASS braking! I was still looking in the rear view and saw the cars start to bumbity bumb! I started to fear the worst as I know about the "domino" effect that can happen to stoped traffic when rear end accidents happen in this scenerio. Fortunatly, well for me the rex behind me had stopped with a great deal, read as 3 feet or so, of distance from me as I saw him get the boody bumb but come no where close to hitting me. (nice job btw!! and TY!!). My worst fear was realized as being last in a group of cars caravaning had happened. I felt ill because I knew that there might be injuries but still was not expecting deaths as the speed was too low. I saw three cars pull off onto a side street and new that all was well as the cars were still running and the pilots were ok.......I should have stoped and feel REAL bad about not doing so. I think that one of the silver rex's made it to the meet but I never did find out who that was. Needless to say I was extremly worried about the other two cars and went buy the street that they turned off to after the meet but unfortunatly neither car was there. Ok enough ramblings... Andrew....I feel ya bro. I hope that you are ok and remember ......the car can be fixed for a price......YOU are harder to fix! I truley hope that you are ok! Michael Olds |

thanks for all the replies guys. Michael, Hiroshi (98 blue RS) and I are both physically fine (mentally im pretty upset-my baby has been hurt bad and i pretty much caused it ) that glass was my headlights and fog lights. Hiroshi, if you are reading this, again I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances and please do not let this experience sour your future involvment in the i-club. and on a side note, I think some 4-Pots are in the near future for my car. |

Andrew,
When you go fix your car at the bodyshop, that's also the ideal time to get other stuff done while your there. When I had my accident, I had them install/paint my v5 spoiler and paint my sideskirts. They did it for free and they sanded down my whole car and put a whole new clear coat on it (I didn't even ask for that!). So, I didn't pay a dime, I didn't even have to pay the $500 deductable. They also washed/waxed my car like 3 times. I've never seen my car look so good after they were done fixing it. They were quick too. Took like a week. You can tell where they painted it because it's a lot smoother than the cheap ass stock paint. Why did they do all that you ask? Maybe it was the help-an-asian-brotha-out discout. j/k. I think bodyshops overestimate, so if you want extra work done, they'll probably hook you up with a better price. Mike |
