That's good that things seem to be resolved. If all else fails, don't be afraid to default on ninja stars.

Agreed. I hate passive aggressive notes. You can usually tell when someone is an ******* or not. Especially neighbors. If the neighbor seemed like an *******, then I'd understand the fear of having a confrontation. But, not all confrontations have to be negative. Why do they even need to be called confrontations? Why not just call them discussions. Let's discuss my issue with your exhaust and see if we can hammer out a solution.

It is true though, a lot of 20-somethings are entitled and selfish. You want to know why? Because a lot of "older" and "wiser" folk are grumpy, conservative, buttholes who don't like hearing the other side of an argument. Cause and effect.

As someone with noisy neighbors, and ex-neighbors who would fill the common places of my building with a very specific blend of smoke. Some of us do not want to discuss it with our neighbors. I have no interest in knowing them. I live in a place that I pay rent for that has specific rules. They were blatantly violating those rules. I left them a note asking them as politely as I could to stop (I actually did this 3 times). I had absolutely no interest in having a discussion about it.

The note was my nice attempt. They decided to ignore it. I then called the police. They are no longer living in the building, as they were evicted after the police visit.

There's a balance here. If you are violating laws/rules of your living situation, you are in no place to have a discussion. If they have bothered to warn you at all, they are being nice and you should comply. If you feel you are on the right side of all applicable rules/regulations, then by all means ignore it.

I'm glad I got this straightened out and feel better that both myself and neighbor have a solution. Last thought, she is one of the neighbors that my wife and I have rarely talked to, so I now see why she would have wrote a letter in the first place. They're more of a keep to themselves type and that's fine. I'm just glad it's solved.
Nice that you were able to get it resolved. Usually I make sure I wave to all my neighbors when I'm coming down the street and smiling with a big happy face. I even wave and smile to people I've never spoke with many houses down....In the long run they'll realize that your just a friendly guy in a Subaru.

Haha yep and most of my neighbors know me by name and know i'm a friendly guy. The neighbor in question and I never really talked more than a passing hello before so we didn't have that rapport.

You should at least sack up and admit that you didn't knock on his door because you were afraid. You weren't trying be nice. A passive aggressive note is not nice. Passive aggressive notes are weak, lame, and annoying.

I'm surprised. It actually takes A LOT to evict someone, I'm sure his noisy exhaust wasn't the only reason. Must be different it Illinois.

The OP didn't say his exhaust broke any laws. He only stated that he was annoying the crap out of his neighbors. The fact that SEVERAL neighbors got together behind the OP's back to whine about his exhaust was also not nice. It also seems that the neighbors knew the OP was not an asshat neighbor, albeit he was being annoying, so there was nothing to fear. They just didn't want to seem like buttholes by telling him their problem face to face. Guess what, they came out like buttholes anyway. Even worse than that, they came off as cowards. How embarrassing.

I don't let the WRX idle when I start it up in the morning. I head right out and try to keep the revs to a minimum until i get out of my neighborhood.

No, I was in no way afraid of a couple of annoying college kids. However, it was not passive aggressive, it was a request. I gave them the option to stop without involving authorities, they chose not to.

There is exactly no upside to me 'confronting' them with this. Nor any reason for me to waste my time. I wrote a note that said "stop smoking in the building" and left it on their door. It took me all of 5 seconds. I did not care to have a discussion on it, it wasn't a topic open for debate. It was do this or I'll report it to the authorities.

His exhaust may be legal, but most likely it's not. Very few aftermarket exhausts are. Many neighborhoods also have additional agreements in your neighborhood laws/etc around noise, times, etc. My point is, be damn sure you're on the right side of all applicable laws/regulations. Your neighbors have no obligation to even give you notice.

I'm not sure why you immediately assume this all comes down to fear. It's a least-effort approach, because you shouldn't have to deal with it in the first place.

+1.....I try and do the same. I'm currently running TGV Delete's along with the 20/30 degree weather we get here in Chicago and my car sounds funky with the rpm bouncing around all over the place. I try and leave as smooth as I can.

Another update:

Ran into another neighbor across the street from me, asked if she thought my car was overly loud and she said no way, she loves it and it never disturbed her in the morning. Apologized anyways and said if there was ever a problem to feel free to let me know. She also said she got SEVERAL anonymous letters in the mail about matters which she didn't discuss with me. I guess the person writing these letters gets easily offended and I'm just going to try to be as neighborly as possible.

Notes are not passive aggressive.

You need to go back to school and demand that your teachers educate you on what this means, or you need to stop using the term.

A polite note is non-confrontational. That is NOT passive aggressive. A note is a VERY reasonable, normal way for neighbors to bring this kind of issue to light. It avoids starting a specific beef between Person A and Person B, while politely informing Person B that there is an issue.

If you believe otherwise, you're probably a jerk. A person who lives for conflict. A bad person. I'm sorry for the people who have to know you, if that's the case.

Good for you! You are actively trying to solve the problem.

Well done!

However, if I may... that neighbor across the street who said "no way, I love it!" might have actually meant "yes, it's kind of loud, but I don't want to upset you."

There is HUGE internal pressure to avoid conflict for most Americans. We don't want a fight. We try very hard NOT to upset other people most of the time, not to make them dislike us. We will outright lie to their face in order to make them feel better, most of the time.

Just be aware of that.

Totally agree with that fact but she seemed genuine when I spoke with her. Like I said before I'm just gonna be as careful as possible and continue talking to the neighbors.

I'm glad you resolved the issue.

I had a neighbor in my apartment complex tell me my car was too loud when he had a straight piped camaro. I respectfully told him that I would try and be more quiet and he punched me. Most Americans do try and avoid confrontation but this one did not. Your lucky she was so kind.

Passive aggressive: "Expressing aggression in non-assertive, subtle (that is, passive or indirect) ways."

Aggression: "Readiness to attack or confront."

Writing a note when somebody else bothers you, displays a readiness to confront the individual about the problem in a non-assertive subtle manner. It's a means through which you can tell someone something they don't want to hear (although it may be necessary) while simultaneously robbing them of the ability to tell their side of the story. It's unfair. There's something wrong when two adults cannot have a normal discussion that brings these issues to light in order to figure out a compromise. There doesn't need to be a conflict. In my opinion notes are just as disrespectful as having a loud exhaust. You're making a demand, not trying to meet half-way. That is way meaner than what I propose. Maybe I'm a jerk, but at least I know I am. Continue hiding behind your polite notes and keep telling yourself that you're a "good" person if it makes you feel better.

Nope.

I've got an aftermarket exhaust on my car too, it has a throb to it and it's definitely not stock, but you can't hear me coming from blocks away either. I work in a professional environment with an enclosed parking garage, so I really can't afford to have a super loud and obnoxious car. No one has bitched about it.

I've never seen your car nor do I know how loud it actually is. But if someone is bitching about your exhaust, it's probably pretty loud. Just sayin'.

I don't think it's that loud nor do the neighbors i've talked to with exception for the one who wrote the note. I'll continue to talk to the other neighbors to see if anyone else had a problem with it or if it was only the one lady who had a problem and added the "other neighbors" part for effect... unless the other neighbors are lying as Rogue suggested then I guess I can't trust anyone.
