Autos.ca has a review of this tire:

Apparently, the switch from an asymmetrical tread to a directional tread was mostly driven by marketing concerns:

According to Continental Key Account Manager Ryan Bradshaw, the asymmetrical tread pattern proved superior in Continental’s testing for the Extreme Winter Contact, but consumer and dealer perception was that asymmetrical tires were associated with all-season tires, as opposed to winter tires. So I have a 15 with stock rims, what size snow tires should I go with? I realize I'm late in the game, but I had to ask.

What do you want from your winter tires?
OE size is good starting point but at this time of the year it may be a question of what is available.

Go with OE size. I'm pretty happy with my Blizzak WS-80's. Great for traction on snow and ice. Not stellar for performance driving, (get the LM-32's for that). Should be able to get some good deals, now, with left-over stock.

Will be shopping for replacement winters for my wife's F-XT for next year. Looking to scoop up some late season deals...

They are past their prime, treat them as AS tires.

Now to pawn them off onto someone and buy something newer for next season.

I assume 6/32" is when I should be getting rid of them?

This or after last winter keep them during the summer and use them up.
Next time do not start winter below 6/32.

Krzy***347;

PS This is from the guy who started this winter with 6/32 (or slightly less) on my 3Ds. But they are hand-me-downs from my wife (she has Xi3). I can work from home and she either takes unpaid vacation or drives to work.

OT post, sorry:

Sent you a message but not certain it went through...

A rep at TireRack told me you guys don't sell hubcentric rings separately. Is that true?

I have a pair of OZ Ultraleggeras (18x8 and 18x9, originally bought from TR for an E46 M3). I THINK they're 79mm bore (can you confirm?) vs. the 72.5 of the car. Anyway, I don't have the hubcentric rings (they were built into spacers which I'm no longer using) and I'm having a hard time finding anyone selling rings in that size.

Any advice?
Bump...

Luke, does TR sell the OZ rings?

So far excellent tires. Deepest I've climbed through was 23" all around good. They door get a little squirrelly at times.

Default The Winter Tire thread- all winter tire questions go here !!!

My yearly xi3 review:

Still very impressed with my Michelin xi3's. They are on their 3rd season, and at least 30,000-35,000 miles.

Saturday I was driving in 10-12 inches of untouched snow on ****ty PA back roads.....I could hear the underside dragging in the snow most of the time....and still....had NO problems driving around. It was DEEP.

The way the past few years have been, I could probably get away with a performance winter tire....but man.....when we actually get a bunch of snow, I'm glad I have the studless ice and snow.

They aren't the best in slush or wet snow as far as turning and stopping goes....but in powdery-type snow and even dry pavement these tires are great.

I will most likely get a new set of the xi3's next winter. I could probably squeeze out another season, but I wanted to get a different size anyway.

I just moved to Great Lakes (north chicago area) from San Diego. I have a 2015 STI. My car isn't here yet so I haven't had to deal with the snow. Anyway what do you guys think would be a good winter performance tire that will last me for the next 4 winters? I plan on getting dedicated snow wheels, 17"x7.5 or 8. whatever will clear the brembos. I also have 20mm spacers that I can leave or remove.

Again this is for next winter, as there's only a month or so of snow left. Plows do a good job of cleaning up the roads so I'm leaning more towards a performance tire than snow.

Thanks!

Dunlop 3D or 4D.
I really liked my 3Ds, but never ran the 4Ds. Good price and performance.

With this year's winter you may need winter tires until mid April, or longer.
Blizzak LM-32, Dunlop 4D, Pirelli Sottozero are all decent choices.

H rated Xi3 are almost as good as performance winters and much better in snow and ice.

2013 WRX. Want to make my old stock rims my winter set so I'm shopping tires. The car is lowered an inch so need something that will give me the traction without bring too big/rubbing. I live in Denver, CO and do a fair amount of snow driving. Recommendations?

I think it depends where you are driving, just over the pass to places like Breck and Vail, or are you rallying up to Steamboat or down to Aspen?
Favorite winter tire ever, and what I'm currently running, Nokian Hakka R2s.
If you want something more performance minded, Dunlop 4D.

Maybe once or twice to Steamboat or Telluride each year. Up to Vail or Breck usually every weekend. And do you think those would be low profile enough to fit on a 17" rim with a 1" lower?

They are available in most sizes, so yeah. I would stick to stock size or go 225 45 17. But at this time its gonna be slim pickins, as they ran out of your size at tirerack for instance, long ago. Personally, I would skip the perf winters and get true winters if possible, but if you need them now its gonna be tough. Might not have much of any choices. I would scan the classifieds and CL and cross your fingers. You might get lucky at a costco or tire store or something.

I hear what you are saying regarding the true winters whooten, but they are super pro at clearing the streets in CO and Denver rarely gets build-up on the streets. True winters are the safest choice though, it all depends on how many times he goes over the pass.

FWIW, tirerack has only the Blizzak ws80 in that size. Thats the one winter tire they have left in that size. Id comb the costcos and big o's and such, Im sure theres some out there but might be tricky to find.
