It's not a leak since I'm making the same boost/vacuum and when wrapping the exhaust and dp I didn't remove many parts, or any parts to cause an exhaust leak. Another odd thing I've noticed is my a/f goes a tad lean (~15.2 on avg.) at idle and when I turn my headlights on, it goes to normal 14.7 The car seems to learn the new blanket/wrap but I have to reset the car to clear the codes, thus clearing the learned info, so it would turn into an endless cycle since the code is thrown before the car learns how to handle it. When the car first starts and the blanket doesn't matter since everything was fully cooled overnight, it runs fine as well. It's weird but I just can't stop pointing to the blanket - maybe have to switch maf's or just take everything off and see if it goes away

Are you pro-tuned, and what heat range are your plugs? Also, did you run a boost leak test? If not you can't say for sure that you have no leaks. Trust me, you'll think everything is fine, then run a leak down test, and find small leaks you'd never expect. Better to know 100% for sure. I'm sorry but wrapping your exhaust (without removing the components, which is a little mid boggling or just a very tedious and unpleasant task if possible) and installing a turbo blanket, this alone causing a lean code makes absolutely no logical sense sir.

MAF cleaned, injector cleaner in tank (one of two tankfuls) a new fuel filter, and a ECU reset. So much for the easy stuff. Keeping fingers crossed...

It's incredibly odd, especially the new voltage (headlights on vs off) affecting the a/f. The car is protuned, the plugs are ngk one step colder

Turbocharged, That issue is very odd but they are electrical sensors so check all your connections. MAF and O2. If you have a multimeter (10$ at radio shack) you can check the resistance of your sensors to make sure their good and replace if necessary. Timmy and others have laid out great troubleshooting steps for you. Listen to them. From what I read I would start with these steps:
1. Check connections
2. Do boost leak test, if you are leaking it will NOT show on your boost/vacuum, that is a common misconception
3. Borrow friends MAF

Default p0171 came on 3 times on the highway

I'm pretty new to Subaru's and I had this code come up 3 times already first time It came on after about a mile on the highway and I had it shut off second time It also came on while on the highway for about the same amount of time. The code went off the next day after about 2 hours of driving in town. Then yesterday got on the highway again and the code returned. Any Ideas?

I just got this code yesterday. I checked for vacuum leaks, cleaned the MAF, clean the IACV so far nothing has cured it. Bit the bullet yesterday and ordered a new Front Air/Fuel Sensor made by Denso. It was roughly around $134 bucks on Amazon.com

Denso 234-9011 Oxygen Sensor (Air and Fuel Ratio Sensor)

Just in case anyone was wondering this is the EXACT same sensor as you buy from the dealership, but much cheaper! Cheers!

i had this same CEL for a very long time and did everything you've listed. I finally made a boost leak tester and figured out that the spacers on the injectors that the fuel rail presses on that presses the injector in there were way squishy and i could slide the injector up and down after the rail was bolted back in. my easy fix was just to put a O-ring on the top of the spacer.
just my .02

Got this cel after a good week or so after I uninstalled my defi boost gauge and went back to oem lamco boost gauge, do you guys think its something w/ the wiring/grounding? Or perhaps one of the vacuum lines from the oem bpv leaking? (Cel occured on the fwy in cruise control, prior driving was all city up until today)

Also ... At idle, the car sometimes idles a little "rougher" than the usual

Run a boost leak check. It's fairly simple, make a tester, (its cheap), hook up air compressor, watch gauge and listen/squirt soap and water for leakage. There are some lines that need to be plugged and disconnected but its a simple process.

I've been going through everything to try to solve my p0171 CEL. Checked for leaks (may have to try a boost leak check), checked fuel pressure (good), according to the PID values on short term fuel trim it is 0% min and 0% max, and for long term trim it's -5.47% min and -5.47% max which doesn't seem right, both as a range of trims and also if the car thinks I'm running lean wouldn't it make sense to *add* fuel, not subtract it from long term trim? I am reluctant to order a new O2 sensor as I don't want to just start replacing parts wholesale.

Nice 1st post

Buy the denso version of the o2 sensor, its under $90 on amazon. IF ... that fails you .... return it. Simple. Report back once you have done this

Forgot about your post timmy, and thanks for the input. I went ahead and went w/ the "buy new o2 sensor" path and reset ecu/disconnect battery ... so far so good

*fingers crossed*

That will be my next step after I run a boost leak check. Unfortunately it runs $122 on Amazon, it must have gone up in price. Unless I'm looking at the wrong one (the one I'm looking at is the Denso 234-9011, the downstream sensor is 234-4446 and runs $58 but I that's not the correct one as far as I can tell).

I don't know...according to the Denso website it's the 234-9011. Amazon's fitment guide says the 9120 does not fit. I'm probably just going to have to bite the bullet and ante up the $123 for the 234-9011...at least there is a return policy if it does not work.

Well it wasn't the oxygen sensor so that got sent back. Time to clean the IACV and see if that fixes it. Will also have to try going through everything again and seeing if I can find any leaks - I'd found 2 hoses split and those were replaced but have not been able to find anything else that looks questionable.

Okay I've gone through the hoses again, took off the intercooler to check out hoses more closely...cannot find any misplaced hoses except for possible one. This hose comes off some kind of solenoid or sensor that is located on the intake manifold on the driver's side underneath the intercooler, I've tried to identify it in the WRX manual but the line drawings are not all that helpful if you don't already know a fair amount about the engine layout. Can someone take a look and tell me what this is and the hose that I'm holding (at the top of the photo)? I've tried to see where it goes based on its length and where it is tie wrapped to a wire bundle (it's only a few inches long so logically the place where it plugs into it has be be close but I've searched and searched and cannot find it...see picture in the link...

Okay let's try the link again, doesn't seem to be showing up correctly, go to:

9 years later this post helped me and my 3g wrx Threw the p0171 on the way to work friday, and when i left the office i popped the hood ans started tracing back from #1 in the post. turns out the hose connecting my boost gauge was sliced almost off by the hose clamp. Grabbed a pair of scissors from my kit, and a screwdriver and was back on the road in 15 min.

Thanks!

3. Hose leaks, generic air leaks. Mostly in and around the intercooler, turbo, BOV, vaccum lines, turbo, etc... There is a vaccum hose coming out of a nipple on the right side of the BOV on the IC; the return/recirc. line runs off of the BOV under neath the IC to the intake. It gets pulled off easily if you remove your IC without disconnecting the BOV. There are some vaccum line connections on the turbo inlet hose. The Samco turbo inlet hose does not fit 100% perfect - there could be a small leak or tear. Check the turbo outlet, and Y connections on the IC. Check for a tear or leak or loose clamp on any replacement hoses. Check all hoses in any area where you were recently working on something. Boost gauge installation or UNinstallation. IC installation, FMIC installation/uninstallation. All those hoses need to be securely connected and routed to the appropriate places! If necessary, find a buddy with a WRX, park them side by side and trace all the lines. Chances are you would would also notice some sort of boost fluctuation/abnormality if there were a leak, but this is not always the case.
