Default Mobil 1 Racing Oil 0W-30

has anyone used this oil? I am thinking of switching to it because I have around 6,000 miles on my 2004 WRX and I know how people say to wait till about then to switch to Syn oil. Also, what kind of oil comes from the factory in the engine. I am a total newbie and did some searching but couldn't find much on this exact mobil 1 racing oil. i found lots of people using mobil1 5W-30 and 10W-30 but not 0W-30

That's because if you look at the chart in your owners manual that shows recommended viscosity vs. temperature, the only grades Subaru recommends are 5W30 and 10W30. Most of us follow those recommendations.
As for "racing oil" it is not better for street driving applications. You should only use oil with the proper API/SAE rating.

I follow the SOA recomendation of 5w30/10w30 and I think it's based on the assumption that 99% of owner use Dino oil. I suspose that 0w30 or 0w40 synthetic is good but, untill the jury says ok I'll stick with my Mobil1 5w30 or 10w 30 for normal driving. Ed

From Mobil1.com:
Quote:
Benefits of Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30:**

Has boosted levels of anti-wear protection – well beyond those of ordinary motor oils – to help protect engines even during grueling racing applications.
Maximizes power output by reducing internal friction.
Has outstanding shear stability and a robust additive package to help reduce oil breakdown and help extend engine life, even under the most extreme conditions.
Compared to conventional racing oils and higher-viscosity synthetic motor oils, it provides faster flow to critical engine parts at low temperatures.
Delivers exceptional high-temperature protection, even at temperatures up to 400ºF (204ºC).

Applications:
Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is intended for professional and amateur "weekend" racecars, as well as modern high-output engines of all kinds. It is ideal for supercharged, turbocharged and high-revving, high-performance engines used in street applications. Note: Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is a different formula than Mobil 1 with SuperSyn 0W-30, and the two formulas are intended for different applications. Please see the Product Data Sheet for details. Follow the viscosity grade and API service category recommendations in your vehicle owner's manual.

Previous owner ran 0w40 mobil1 in mine since 3000 miles, consumes not a DROP of oil and runs VERY strong, now @ 73k... you be the judge

Just FWIW.

My 2001 New Beetle has the 1.8 turbo and is recommended to use 0W40 oil synthetic. Other than that I run 5w30 or 10w30.

In MY01 RS I used 5w30 in the winter and now am running 10w30. From switching it seems 10w30 works better (engine running smoother)

For a WRX I would say stick with 5w30 or 0w40 synthetic.

<rant>I made the Oil FAQ so these discussions didn't errode into testimonials about this oil, that oil, this engine, my buddy, my mechanic, etc. stories. If you want to run pure Wesson Oil in your car....be my guest. I recommend what Subaru, EVERY car and oil manufacturer on the planets recommeds, as well as the API/SAE, which is.........what is in your owner's manual.</rant>

My most formal apologies for stepping out of known character and on anyone's ideas, toes, or opinions.

Not recommended by you. I've run M1 0w30 with oil analysis results to prove that it works just as well as the M1 5w30.

OK....so I live in central florida, and in the summer the ambient temperature will seldom(if ever) drop below 80°F, even at night, and be over 95°F often....from June through September...
What weight syn oil would anybody suggest for that???
Surely not 5w30 or 10w30....

Mobil1 10W30 year 'round.

Run it for 3,750 miles then have an analysis performed. Don't do an oil change until after you get the results back to see how much longer you can go.

I've used M1 10W30 in my lawn mower for two years now. Don't try that with a conventional 10W30.

If I lived in south Florida, I'd just run 10w30 year round. M1 10w30 is more than up to the task.

My question was rhetorical as I already knew the answer to my question....I just wanted to see what others thought....

Convince me that 0w30(race type) or 0w40 isn't better for sustained hi heat use.

The main drawback of using an oil with a higher viscosity spread when it is not required is that the oil will need more viscosity improvers in the oil to reach that spread. Unfortunately, those viscosity improvers aren't as stable as just plain oil so it tends to break down a bit quicker.

That being said, there usually isn't evough of a difference in real-world performance between a synthetic 0w30, 5w30 and 10w30 from the same manufacturer and base stock to make much of a difference if any in actual engine wear provided that the weight range is sufficient for your ambient temps and your engine is in good shape.

Theoretically a heavier weight oil such as a Xw40 is better for higher ambient temps that result in higher oil sump temps as it will remain thicker at those higher temps. However, you have to also recognize that a thinner oil (Xw30) will transfer heat better than a thicker oil and will often result in lower oil temps. Then again, in our application where the WRX's oil temps are regulated by coolant temps, you will find that even in high ambient temps oil sump temperatures don't get much higher than lower ambient temps.

My recommendation? Given that the oil system is well engineered in the WRX, I'd run whatever synthetic oil makes you happy, anything from a 0w30 to a 10w40. Get a couple used samples analyzed after 5k miles or so for peace of mind and then don't worry about it.

My sentiments exactly.

Something many owners don't realize is that there is a lot of viscosity variation between brands and you *cannot* rely on just what's printed on the label --for example: 5W30 Mobil 1 is a thinner oil than Redline 5W30, with the Mobil having almost the viscosity of a 20 wt. (!) whereas the Redline is more like a heavy 30 or even a 40 wt. Also, the German made Castrol 0W30 is a heavier oil than the Mobil 5W30 even tho it's an 0W. The heavier Mobil 10W30 is really a better choice even when the manual calls for the 5W30. But any synthetic would be better than using plain dino.

<shameless rant ahead>The WRX turbo is a beautifully designed motor with chamfered oil passages, moly coated pistons, and a highly efficent oil cooler.
To use anything but a high quality synthetic oil makes a mockery of the outstanding engineering that went into this engine, and should be punishable by immediate confiscation of the owner's vehicle.</shameless rant>

Where did you get the information on Viscosity Variations between brands? 5W30 is 5W30 on all brands and it has to be measured in order to have that symbol on the bottle.

All oil manufacturers supply it. To qualify as a 20wt, 30wt, 40wt or 50wt, the viscosity has to fall within a range of values, it is not a fixed value.

Naturally, some 30wts will be closer to 20wt, others will be closer to 40wt, and others will be right in the middle.

Mobil1 5w30 is on the thinner side of a 30wt oil.

The M1 0w30 is actually thicker at 100c than 5w30!

Here's some numbers, all are cSt @ 100*C. You can see how RedLine and especially Amsoil oils for example tend to be heavier than their M1 counterpart.
M1-R 0W-30: 10.3
M1 0W-20: 8.4
M1 0W-30: 10.3
M1 5W-30: 10
M1 10W-30: 10.0
M1 0W-40: 14.3
M1 15W-50: 17.4
RedLine 5W-20: 9.1
RedLine 5W-30: 10.9
RedLine 10W-30: 10.7
RedLine 5W-40: 15.1
RedLine 10W-40: 15.6
RedLine 15W-40: 14.5
Amsoil S2k 0W-30: 11.2
Amsoil ASL 5w30: 11.7
Amsoil ASM 10w30: 11.9
Amsoil AMO 10w40: 14.9

I'm not sure this matters very much. It's like tire sizing--some 225s are close to 235mm wide.

Why wouldn't you just buy the oil with the specs best suited to your car and driving style, and who cares about the nominal weight on the side of the bottle? If Mobil 1 0W30 is too thin for you, get some 0W40 or 5W40 instead.

In switching from 5W30 Mobil to 5W30 Redline, I noticed a slight improvement in oil pressure and also a little more induction howl
when the engine is revved. To me, that's tangible evidence that these two oils are not the same.
Hard to say whether the viscosity variation was the cause of this or some other property of the Redline (which is advertised to have the film strength of a conventional 10W40.)

Because the Mobil 5W30 is so thin, some guys like to mix 10W30 Mobil with a quart of Mobil 15W50 for their oil changes. Doing that brings the Mobil viscosity up to that of a heavy 30 wt.

I've used 0w30 in my car for over 50k...I have since then switched to 5w30 and I have 87k on her...zero leaks, excellent compression, magnet drain plug has NOTHING on it not even a dust particle of metal... and I beat the crap out of my car...so your so called "personal recomendations" dont do justice any more.
use what you like dude!
