Default Used Koni shocks - expected change in feel from full soft to full firm?

I just picked up what appeared to be a great suspension setup for my needs that included Koni struts already mounted in 2002 wagon strut bodies. I wanted to test the adjustment from full stiff to full soft by hand. I first pushed the strut down and pulled it up to get a feel for the compression and rebound damping at full soft. The resistance seemed to be steady and controlled. I then turned the adjuster to full stiff and pushed down and pulled up. At full stiff I didn't notice any difference in compression, although it was much stiffer in rebound. Is this normal?

I expected the Koni's to get equally stiffer in both compression and rebound and was suprised by the fact that I found no difference in compression between full soft and full stiff. I was just pushing down on the unmounted strut by hand, but I wouldn't think it would make any difference when mounted on a vehicle. Appreciate any input from those with experience with the Koni inserts.

Yes, Koni single adjustable struts (the yellow ones) only adjust rebound.
