Foam? Spring? Air?
Its getting time for me to buy a new mattress/bed and I am unsure if I should go with a foam, spring, air, etc?
Input and experiences on any kind would be great. I was leaning towards a Tempurpedic but I have heard they get hot during summers becasue of poor venting. Thanks Adam

Tempurpedic is nice, but a high end spring bed can't be beat IMHO. My best friend has a tempurpedic and he has complained about it getting hot as well, and some people can't stand the feeling of being sunken into the bed. The theory behind it is great, and i slept pretty well on the one my ex had, but i couldn't deal with it every night.

I have a tempurpedic and I love it, but it does indeed get warm at night.
I hate to sound like a commercial, but my back pain did go away after we started sleeping on it, but my old mattress was 15 years old, so it could be that ANY bed I bought would have solved the issue. Curt |

If you do get a tempurpedic matress make sure you break it in before you try and sleep on it. When we first got ours the first two nights were miserable. I was so afraid I made a mistake buying it. After we broke it in, it got 100 times more comfortable.
To break in the matress, lay it on the floor. Now walk on every square inch of the thing several times. My family and I spent an hour walking the matress. This ruptures all of the closed cells in the foam and allows it to compress and expand as its supposed to. You will notice that at the beginning the matress is pretty firm and you are walking on top of it. After a few laps you will notice that you start sinking into the matress more. |

I like how you used the "laps" terminology, like a nice new set of tires
I have a pillow top by the way. Love it. But like the other guy, my other one was like 20+ years old so I'm sure anything was better. Quote:

Yeah my mattress is about 10yr old and starting to sag in the center.
Thanks for the input on the Tempurpedic. Anyone have that sleep number? I have heard from a couple of people that have it and they said they love it but not to sure if I trust an air controlled bed. |

Thats the way I am with the Tempurpedics. Have slept on a couple in hotels but never really got to experience them. Are the 30 day trials they have with Tempurpedics worth a shot? |

My parents gave me a new bed as my college graduation gift (sounded lame when they told me) but after 1.5 years of using it, I wouldn't give it up for any reason.
It was a Englander Latex Mattress, bought from Bedrooms and More (on 45th in U-dist) and worth every single penny. |

I went with a Sealy Posturpedic pillow top from Costco and it is great. And we saved a fortune on it. I think it all depends on how much you want to pay. Also, those Tempurpedic mattresses weigh a lot, and aren't very easy to move. Not sure what your situation is, but definitely something to consider.
The Sleep Number beds seem to gimmicky to me. I've slept on them at hotels and about 50% of the time 1/2 of the bed was "out of order". The control wouldn't work so the pump didn't work. I'd rather not have to worry about my mattress breaking... good luck JS |

I just bought a mattress on sunday. I went with a latex-core model. I've only slept on in one night, so i cant say anything long term, but i love it so far. The sales man was really cool and was explaining to me about temperpedic mattresses and why they are a bad idea.
Basically, they don't last long. There was a guy in the store looking for a new mattress because his hella expensive temperpedic mattress lasted only three years. Something that i spend over 2k on i want to last. There is also the problem of heat; They get really hot without any means to dissipate the heat absorbed from your body. He was also telling me that this region is not ideal for the sleep number bed. The bed operates by inflating a pillow of air to your desired firmness. It uses gas (duh) to inflate the pillow. Because there is alot of temperature change in the NW, the gas will expand/contract depending on the current environment temperature, thus changing the firmness you so accurately seeked. There is an option to eliminate this problem...an electronic pump. The pump will keep the pillow at your desired pressure, keeping the sleep number accurate no matter how much the environment's temperature changes in one night. The problem with the pump is that if your are a light sleeper, or your spouse/gf/bf is, it will wake you in the middle of the night, totally eliminating the prospect of a peaceful nights sleep. So with the sleep number bed and the temperpedic bed out of the question, i started wandering over the showroom and asking about different types of beds. I ended up laying on a latex bed, and immediately was relaxed. I thinks its most like a temperpedic, but without the whole absorbing-heat and sinking-feeling issues. Basically its Foam for the first 7 or 8 inches from the bottom, then 2 layers about an inch and a half think of latex-type foam stuff. All natural tree-latex, molded, and layered on the soy-based foam core (soy based lasts longer than oil based foam, and all natural tree-gum latex lasts longer than other types). Added with the fact that it uses all natural bamboo and wool fibers, the mattress is 98% all natural (the 2% is government issued fire-protector board). There are also no heat problems associated with memory-foam/temperpedic materials. They stay warm in winter, cool in summer. The queen i purchased was just over a grand, but it was on sale (showroom model). I love my new mattress, couldn't be happier. Although, first night on any new surface is restless (for me) simply because it is unfamiliar and different. I woke up without my back hurting, thats a good start. The place i went to was Mattress Depot in Bellevue. I know its a bit of a drive from Portland, but my experience was awesome, and i will recommend anyone in the area to go there. All in all, find a good salesman, and see if there is a mattress depot nearby! |

I got a mattress with a foam top a couple years ago, it's super comfortable but it did take me a while to get used to the heat reflection. Turned down the thermostat, less blankets, etc. I'ts not a problem, but I'm still not 100% sure I like it. I don't think my next mattress will have a foam top.

She also found an ad for a new bed place in portland. http://www.surplusfreight.us/main.htm **EDIT** nevermind.... they seem to have some really bad reviews! Last edited by twigg107; 06-11-2008 at 12:10 AM. |

I have the older model 3 years old from Costco and it is very nice. We just bought a new King size and had the new Costco one but returned it because of the "OffGas" smell the fire stuff. we then went with a Englander Latex Mattress and love it it has been a month on it and it is just as nice as the foam queen size we had from Costco with NO SMELL |

The heat is really not that big of a deal. The first few night you notice that it is warmer, but its not like its uncomfortable. I would doubt that anyone would call it "really hot." I typically sleep with only a down comforter and a sheet all year round and I am perfectly comfortable. This is the exact same blanket combo I used on my previous non-foam bed. I know tempurpedic has a free in home trial. You could try that if you were worried about the heat. Someone else mentioned the weight of the mattress. That is a true fact. They are substantially heavier than a normal mattress. With that said I still move mine by myself and I am not He-Man. You will need to make sure your bed is solid though before you put the mattress on it. Make sure it has cross bars and not just the perimeter to support the mattress. J |
