So... the tire question. I have two sets of wheels that need tires. One set will need a SUMMER tire in 235/40/17 that has a good tread life, good in the rain, but isn't a bad tire for occasional autox. So no StarSpecs, no Kumhos and I won't buy the Hankook Ventus Evos again.
The second set needs a good A/S tire. I am leaning toward a set of the Federal 595s. They are $72/tire and are going on a set of wheels that I probably won't use a lot, like in case of an emergency if something were to happen to my summer or winter set. I'll probably use this set for the monthly drives too. I would def consider buying something used, must be 225/45/17 and have at least 50% left. No re92s. There is a small possibility of yet another wheel set coming into the picture, but I am not counting on it at the moment because I don't think they guy wants to ship. In the event it does happen, those will become dedicated autox/occasional track wheels with StarSpecs or 615s. I don't care about road noise, and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a set. Ideas, recommendations, tires to avoid? |

@jmessin1 No ideas on summers. As far as all-seasons go, a lot of people that I asked were saying that the Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires weren't as stable as they'd hoped during hard-cornerings. I personally have liked the RE960AS Pole Position all-seasons on my RS.

I'm running conti's DWS on my Sti - they seem Ok but I haven't really pushed it too hard. I have the starspec's on the WRX and like them alot.

Ya they did I just put two on a suv the other day. They do seem to be getting a little better. But still for the price you can't beat it but you also get what you for sometimes.

I've been researching all morning. I think I am pretty set buying the Conti DW for summers. I have dedicated, pretty badass snows already so I don't need the DWS version
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1#post36463061 Post #208, pretty much the most informative review I have come across for the DW. Answers my questions about wet/dry/treadware/autox. |

personally dont like contis the sidewalls are very very soft so i dont see how they could handle, constantly getting bubbles from the smallest hits again from a soft sidewall...ive heard theyre traction is awesome but for tht kind of money u might as well get michelin pole positions way more responsive tire

I have the Hankook ipike studdable snow series for 3 years now, still going for DD on cold season, rally cross and off rally road drive for 60 somethin'. This include spirited driving and the occasional 100+ mph highway runs with little road noise.

The pole positions are easily $200/set more than the contis, and I have to buy two sets of tires keep in mind. If I was ok in paying upwards of $186/tire I would just spend the extra $50 and get a set of the super sports.
But for a DD summer tire, I don't see a huge difference between the two, except the price. I'm not tearing it up on the road every day to the point of where I will really 'feel' the difference in sidewall stiffness. On the course, maybe, but neither of the tires are a track tire and neither will put me in first, or last place. I'm still hoping to pick up another set of wheels that can be designated for track use. Throw some super sticky tires on those, done. But that is not a priority. I have the ipikes as my designated snows, too. Go on in November/December, come off in March/April. LOVE them. They suck on dry pavement, but then again its a snow tire and not made for taking tight turns. But damn, they will keep you on the road in heavy snow and worth every penny. I think this is my third winter with them, plenty more to go too. |

haven't really thought about putting my snows on yet this winter. I hate shoveling more than I like sliding around in the the white stuff so its all good.
