it's hard to explain with pictures posted online. i came into my WRX from a Legacy, i instantly noticed that the low beam lights were "Bla" for my taste.

-i only went with the hyper whites because of personal preference. i could have put a plain ol' H9 in there for about $10/ bucks per bulb. instead, i ordered the ones i got. i am very happy with the outcome.

no more "Bla" H11's

-consider me a poser if you wish. although i've yet to see a WRX Limited or STi in person, so I'm not sure how good those OEM HID's look.

i like the clean look of my car at night now way better.
So when you order the lights from head lightbulbs, did you get the H11? Or went with the H9 and modified the tab to fit?

So after emailing Daniel Stern about this for some clarification, he indicated that "The H9 swap is not safe to do in the reflector-type headlamps." Thoughts?

The reflector type halogen usually have a less controlled beam with more light leakeage above "cutoff" (there is not that much of a defined cutoff). My guess is the increase in light with these type of headlights result in too much light above cutoff causing excessive glare.

Projectors have better beam control and can probably manage more light while still keeping somewhat normal squirrel finder illumination. I think what he is trying to say (without saying it) is its fine on projectors even if it is still illegal, like almost every lighting mod.

Ok thanks that makes sense. Anyone with reflector lamps with this mod that can weigh in with opinions/thoughts/pictures off the beam pattern?

Did this over the weekend but didn't have a chance to try them out until tonight. I noticed the light to be brighter and whiter which was nice.

Bought the Philips H9 off Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00480KOP4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
It took me about 5 minutes to grind the tab off with a utility knife, but about 2 1 hour to get the bumper back on since it was my first time -_-

Cheap way to get some more lumens, but I don't feel like the H11s were all that bad in the first place.

All you had to do was take the air intake out of the left side and move the washer reservoir hose out of the way on the right side.

Did you really take the bumper off just to replace lowbeam bulbs?!

If I understand correctly, this conversion improves light output but that doesn't mean they will give you a whiter look.

There are some bulbs you can buy that imitate the look of HID's to give a whiter look but it is just for looks and if I'm not mistaken have to possibility of diminishing light output due to the coating that is put on the bulb to give it that white look.

I'm not a lighting expert so please chime in if I'm completely wrong

Yup, this will increase light output, but the bulb itself defines the color output.

Something like these would probably give a much less yellow light, as they have no coating on the lens:

Those are the bulbs I used. They seem less yellow than the stock ones. Either way the light output is better!

"Xenon, LED, and filament-bulb lamps are three completely different technologies. They produce light using wholly different means, and therefore they look different. They're supposed to look different. Trying to match the color of a Xenon or LED lamp with a halogen bulb is pointless and counterproductive. It'll never look the way you want it to, and in the meantime all you're doing is wasting money, reducing your seeing ability, creating glare, and in many cases destroying the safety performance and legal compliance of your car's lighting system. "Color temperature" / "Kelvin rating" (correct terminology: CCT) is a real
phenomenon, but its use in the advertisement of automotive lighting
products is almost entirely fraudulent. Higher-CCT light, contrary to
misinformed and disinformed advertising hype, is not "closer to natural
daylight" and does _not_ help you see better in any way, and it produces
significantly worse seeing performance in any kind of bad weather. All
higher-CCT light does is change the appearance of the operating headlamp
and, outside of a very small range created by different surface luminance
characteristics of different legitimate bulb designs, increase glare and
reduce total and usable light output." Daniel Stern Lighting

I got the Phillips H9 bulbs as well and did expect a whiter look. However I'm very happy with the less yellow look compared to the OEM ones. I bought a $9 dremel tool from Harbor Freight which made the the trimming so much easier coupled with small wire cutter. Cut most of the tab off then grind the rest off with a grinding tip. Also according to Daniel Stern the Phillips H9 bulbs are VERY good bulbs. Cheap fix to the OEM lights. Now I can see so much better at night and in snow storms.

So another light comparison... This is all things constant [White Balance (though incorrect ), Shutter Speed, f-stop, ISO, ambient lighting (lights off in my garage)] I was a little disappointed in the engine off differences, so when I put in the 9011 in the high-beams, I will re-test the OEM low-beams with the engine running as well. Also, sorry for the crooked pictures, I wanted to keep a reasonably consistent location on my dash.

OEM Bulbs [after 45k miles], Engine Off

Phillips H9 Bulbs, Engine Off

Phillips H9 Bulbs, Engine On

Phillips H9 Bulbs, Engine On, High Beams [OEM] On

I believe they're not acceptable because in a reflector housing, you can visually see the bulb. In something like a silverado, where they use a 9006, there is a coating on the tip. The H9's do not have this coating, meaning you can see the filament... Blinding EVERYONE. Just my opinion to Daniel sterns response.
