The safest is actually everyone obeying the speed limit. The "free flow of traffic" is intended to be around the speed limit for numerous reasons. Speed limits take into account that 90 year old granny and vehicles not rated for the autobahn. They account for government mandates on national fuel consumption like when they dropped the limit during the last oil crisis. But every Joe schmoe knows better and feels entitled to go faster... Cops account for the maniac impatient douches always in a rush to get to whatever unimportant bs they're racing to.

And the "free flow of traffic" is not determined by speed limits, it is determined by traffic. Control of speeds by enforcement is one of the stupidest and most dangerous concepts we have. It has been shown time and time again that, as I said, setting the speed limit at the 85th percentile is the best option. When we finally got rid of the 65 mph limit Montana went back to "reasonable and prudent". The Feds cracked down on them and made them set the speed limit at 75 mph (or they would withhold funding). The accident rate actually went *up*. Further, the 55 mph limit to "save gas" was a joke, hamstringing the entire nation. Why do you think they got rid of it? Even further, what makes you think all those people are going to "unimportant" places? You have to consider productivity in the equation. "Joe Schmoe" works x hours per day and drives to and from work y hours per day. The time he gets to be at home with his family is 24-x-y. |

Maybe your son will be like our boy. He's 19m old and always says wheeeee when wife or I accelerate a bit quickly in the Subie.
He never says that in the Xterra. Must be a sporty car kid. Paul |

My daughter just sleeps in the car, which was great today when we spent 15 hours in the car, she is 14months.
Drove 870 miles today, first 350 miles or so were 23-25mpg average, remaining was 33mpg, so overall decent mileage, car did great! |

Why was the mileage so low for the first 350 miles? Lots of hills or stop and go?

Just completed a 250km trip. Cruise at 105kph and the last 50km are uphill to 5,632ft. Avg was 6.2l/100km. Comes to about 155 miles and 37.9mpg. Avg temp was 0c or 32f
Btw that's hand calculated not trip computer |

After a 200 mi trip of all highway, 2 people with a little luggage, moderately hilly, in ~30 degree F temps, with winter tires, cruise dialed at 65 mph, I got a gauge indicated 31.2 mpg. Not bad considering the conditions.

I drove a total of 1132 miles this past weekend for the holidays with a calculated average of 29.9 MPG(computer said 31.2). Average speed of 51.7 miles per hour in 15-30 degree temps. My car was loaded down with two adults, a Great Dane, cargo-box filled with guns and ammunition. So combined with heavy headwinds, testing out the car in snow and icy conditions for about 50 miles, and the aerodynamic drag of the cargo-box I'd have to say it did pretty good.

Have a question. Is the total tank AVG MPG trip computer off on these cars. I consisently find almost 3mpg difference between what the car is displaying vs. hand calculating. Last 3 or 4 tanks computer states right at 30MPG give or take a tenth, but I keep hand calculating about 27MPG. Def something wrong, 27mpg for real world driving was not was I purchased this car for. Very disapointing.
I have always done this on all cars, computer or not (and yes I do reset the trip comp). Fill the car - drive - fill again - Total miles / gallons added = MPG. And i fill the same, when it clicks i stop.. and usually takes approx same gallons based upon when I feel needed. IDK. something just does not make sense. |

Our odometers seem to be off by approximately 2.7%. This accounts for much of the MPG error.

Is that 2.7% to the (+ or the -) So my car is piling up more miles than I have actually driven? When I use my GPS the speedo MPH is pretty spot on with the GPS display MPH.
