Post Car will not start, at Evanston for Repair

Well, this afternoon I was going to wash the car, pushed in the clutch, turned the key, and *click*. That's it. The starter didn't start. After a few more tries, I called up Subaru and they got a truck out to my apartment. The driver first tried to jump it, which I had already figured out wasn't the problem. next he pulled out a wrench, and tapped on the solonoid while I tried again. This time it started. I turned it off and it started again. Not wanting to take any chances, I took it to Evanston anyway and left it to be looked at on Monday.

Note Evanston Subaru was not my first choice. They do not give out loaner cars while your Subaru is in the shop. I would have taken it to Schaumburg but the rental place was closed and I would not be able to get one before Monday. Since I have no way to get back and forth from Schaumburg, but can take the train to Evanston, I just took it there.

Has anyone had this problem before or could hazard a guess? I think there's a loose wire somewhere, maybe it got out of wack when my O2 sensor was replaced a few weeks back.

If he tapped the solenoid and got it to start when there was only a click before, the starter solenoid is sticking. At least that should be it, but who knows if they'll actually find anything or not though...

yea if he hit the starter and it then started the solinoid is definetly sticking whether they find a problem or not (or just fix the problem) is another story

no wonder i don't work with scooby's. lol..i know big "honking" v8s inside and out..but scoobys is a little different. Whatever happened to hitting the starter to get the contacts going if they are worn out. lol..maybe i should stick to working on v8s myself and let TAD toy with the scoobers.

Engine basics are still the same, fella-me-lad. Its just the electronics that seem to be confusing you.

Thanks for the info; I hope the mechanics can get around to it on Monday. Not that I'm upset; if it delays my drive to Peoria, I will not complain much.

When I spoke to the "serious" V8 boys last... One was putting together a 600 cu. in. race motor and another was putting finishing touches on corvette heads for use on his truck. Both agreed they needed to get a small fuel efficient car for daily use. One was looking at a ford focus, another had fixed up a '98 Saturn that he bought for $300 (timing belt broke and screwed up the valves) and the third was looking at a Civic...

That is what the V8 boys are up to.

Yeah, I think my V8 guys are NOT the true redneck variety. One has a college degree in mechanical and electrical engineering and has a second job working a tow truck. He uses the company garage (the tow comapany) to restore and mod his cars. Currently he is working on restoring a 74 Thunderbird. He owns two Indian Scouts, one pre-war and one post war. The other guy is an accomplished machinist, and get paid by other drag racers to build race engines (which in turn pays for his race cars). Currently drives around in an old Ford LTD station wagon with a lumpy idle.

The verdict, as determined by Evanston Subaru: Replace the starter. Of course an item as rare (?) as a starter isn't in stock, but that doesn't matter so much since I needed to get to work and will not be back in town until Friday, anyway. My car should be ready by then.

Schaumburg will give you a loaner car, rented from Enterprise. Evanston will not. Remember that the next time your car needs service. The only reason I took it to Evanston was that Enterprise was closed for the weekend and Schaumburg would not be able to get me a loaner durign the weekend.

Instead, I used the company rental agreement with National (which I should have been using anyway to save wear and tear on my car; it actually costs the company less to rent me a car than it does to reimburse me the miles back and forth to Peoria) to get myself a Buick Regal for the week. Wow, is it different.

You don't steer it as much as you chart a course for it. I though I was going to need some tugboats to get it into my parking space. It hasn't wallowed as much since I maxxed the tire pressures, so I guess as long as I only use it for the drives back and forth to Chicago, it'll be okay. I wonder if the 'ol 3800 gets better fuel economy.
