Default Dom 3 or Dom 2.5 or Dom 1 or FP Green? Want ~400 whp with quickest spool? 2.1 stroker

I'm having a hard time deciding on a turbo. I want to be in the 375 -400 whp on pump. I want to have spool as near as I can get to 4k. (4.5k sounds reasonable)

This is going on a fully built:

2.123 L ej205 stroker
mild port and polished ej20 heads.
BC 272 cams.
BC valve springs.

Can it be done?

I got the Dom 2.5 for my stroker, and even though it's not done and running yet, I got it from Treystoys and he had it on a stock JDM EJ207 v8. He was making full boost by 4k (20 psi I think?) and was just cracking into the high 11.98 area on the 1/4. This was on 93 oct. and not even custom tuned. That was without the spooling goodness of the stroker.

From my research, I don't think you will get 375 whp on it though. I think you would need a 52lb turbo or more to hit that and this depends on what dyno. I always get tuned on a Mustang where stock sti's make 220 to 230whp.

Sometimes I wish I wouldv'e got a Dom 3 instead, but I haven't even run the 2.5 yet. It just seems all my other turbo's left me a little disappointed in "numbers" and made me wish I went bigger. Although despite lower than expected numbers, the car hauled ass.

The problem is there's not much good data or graphs on the strokers, so choose wisely . I already have the 2.5 so I'm just going to stick with it and se where I end up.

No love for the DOM 2?

I'm running the DOM 2.0 which is the same as a DOM 3.0, but it's not ball bearing. It is a 52 lb/min turbo. It is on my built (short block, stock EJ255 heads) motor. I was tuned this summer and on e85, at 21.5 psi, I made 373 whp on a mustang dyno with an ambient temperature of 107 degrees (AZ summer FTL). When it hits, it hits HARD.

The spool is not bad, especially with the 6spd. I was at ~20psi by 4000 RPM.

If you find one for a good deal, I would definitely recommend it, but if you're looking new, then pay a bit more and get the DOM 3 with the ball bearings as it is a more robust turbo.

Also, don't forget that there are a lot of things that can aid spool. You can EASILY reduce spool RPM by coating/wrapping (or both ) your headers, uppipe and compressor housing. Porting in these areas will help a lot too. I've seen spool decreases of 200+RPM by retaining this heat in the exhaust system. I have not done this yet, but I will be doing it soon.

EDIT: My dyno graph. The scale is all wonky and the dyno's boost gauge is off (reported a max of 20.8, but other tools measured 21.5 psi). Anyway, the green curve is the boost and it was right around 19.9 to 20 psi at ~4K rpm. I need to get a better plot.

Better plot without boost:

Well, most Greens tend to fall in the 360-380 whp range. The 7cm OG Greens can spool at 42-4300 on a stock ej205. A Dom 2.5/3 might hit full boost at 45-4800 rpm, and make a touch more hp. However, you have a different animal. The extra displacement should help spool, but the cams would hypothetically slow spool. I have no idea to what extent those two factors might cancel each other out.

If I were you, I'd either:

A. Go rotated gt3076r if you haven't already got all the intake/exhaust parts for an upgraded stock unit. You probably do though, in which case it wouldn't be the best idea to sell off a perfectly good uppipe, downpipe, intake, intercooler, etc...

B. If I could buy a brand new turbo, and wanted to stay stock location to go with other parts already upgraded, I'd look into the new Dom 3 XT-R. It's like the Dom 3 in that it's ball bearing Garret components, but it has a billet 55 lb/min compressor wheel. That's a 3 lb/min increase, and a billet wheel means it's lighter weight which could potentially help spool. The current format includes a new 10cm exhaust housing. Honestly, with the 2.12 liter motor and wanting decent spool, I'd ask for an 8 cm housing unless you want to run it over 8k rpm.

C. If you're looking for a used turbo, find a good deal on any of the turbos you mentioned and get a good tune. They'll all be pretty similar and a good deal would be worth more to a budget buyer than the potential 30ish hp difference. Also, they all do well on race gas if you find that the pump map just isn't cutting it sometimes...

gt3076r would be the bomb on this motor. whats your red line going to be set at? and do you have higher compression?

ding ding.. coming from a 30r stock location owner myself. i did have very good results from my stock location turbo but hands down, if i did it all over again i would go rotated. IN FACT, im going rotated right now.

the things i didnt like about stock location is that man.. it was a pita installing this turbo. the stock location inlet sucks. none of the less working on a rotated kit is by far less complicated and roomy.

I third this... I ran a stock location ATP 3076 and loved it. Full spool in 4th by 3500rpm on my built hybrid. I couldn't have asked for anything more but the install was a PITA. I'd rather donate a kidney than do that again so next stop, Fullrace rotated twinscroll.
