Cool Want to get paid to go to every NASA rally on the East Coast?

Paid to go to rallies? Surely such a thing is impossible?!?!!?!one!!!

I'm looking for someone(s) who would like to be the scorekeeper. You would be trained to use the scoring software that Jean-Georges built for RallyScoring.com.
Till now, we've been flying Jean-Georges down from Canada to do the scoring, which is a bit pricey, so we're considering the option of having a "local" guy do it. I'm officially speaking only for Sandblast Rally, but I find the right guy I'm pretty sure the other events would jump on board quickly.

Responsibilities:
-Enter the competitors into the program the night before the event
-Work at Rally HQ all day during the rally compiling the time cards an log sheets
-Periodically upload scores to the web site
-Update the scores as needed during the protest period
-Bring a Windows laptop with the scoring software configured and ready to go

Benefits:
-$100 for your services
-$50 travel/gas
-free hotel bed provided for you (sharing the room with another worker(s))
All the other perks that go along with general volunteering, which are usually along the lines of:
-free lunch during event
-free dinner during event
-free T shirt

Requirements:
-You need to be comfortable using computers, obviously
-You'll need to study the NASA scoring rules
-You'll need to attend a rally and apprentice with a current rally scorer

So, any interest at this stage?

Anders

No one is going to be local. Even if you in a geographically perfect center, you would still be driving, oh, 300 miles to some of the events.

Possibly inerested. Well interested, just don't know my own reliability My job schedule is in a constant flux, keeps life interesting, but makes planning difficult. But would be willing to learn and be a back up I'm very good at being scorekeeper for our rallyx's!

While the 2007 schedule has not been set yet, you can imagine that it will be similar to:

Have a Nice Day?

No, it's not. As the organizer, I invested 650 hours of work last year. (The equivalent of about four months of full time 8 hour days.)The rally "made" about $300 total, after I fronted more than $15,000. THAT is a lot of work for not much money.

Taking the scoring job would pay you about 27 times what I'm making as the organizer.

The job is for a rally fan who wants to be involved. If you want to make money, you can make more in the time involved (2 days driving, one day of rally) by pumping gas or serving burgers for minimum wage.

Cheers,
Anders

You would need to be on site by, oh, 8 PM the day before the rally. What days you need to take off, I can't tell you, it depends on how far you need to drive, whether you tend to drive through the night or not, and all other kinds of stuff. Again I expect the schedule to be similar to this year's schedule:

Only on two day events. For events like Sandblast, Rally West Virginia, and Black River Stages, you would show up Friday night, be done with your responsibilities 24 hours later.

Cheers,
Anders

You also have to be very comfortable working on very tight time pressures in a very loud place with a bunch of impatient competitors milling around trying their best to catch any error you might make. If you are easily frazzled or lose focus easily this isn't the job for you.

That said, it would be a fun job and a neat way to be deeply involved in the events. I wish I could do it but there isn't enough vacation time to spare.
