Actually it appears there's issues with block.
I'm wetarded. My guess is cracked sleeve, scarred sleeve, or something got into bore and made grooves.

If it ever blows up, build a nice shortblock, rotated 30r and leave it alone lol Going fast is the biggest rush imaginable but it comes with a price, that even I was not anticipating when I started this build but I'm addicted and can't stop |

Well... Finally some engine news!!!
Just got off the phone with Nate and the engine will be back up in running in no time! What had happen was... WE MADE TO MUCH DAMN POWER!!! The OEM case bolts were not up to the task of holding the case together which caused the mains to go .005 out do to it stretching and the crank moving back and forth but is being fixed by the machine and we are going to refresh with new bearings all around, new piston rings, ARP case bolts and recheck all clearances so we can hit the 600 mark before taking it to MIR to wreck house! Heads are already completed as well so once the shortblock is back together, we will use ARP L19 headstuds to make the heads dont separate from the block and make some F**king jam!!! |

Progress continues to be made...
The engine should be back in the sti this upcoming week and will be getting around to the fuel system, which I will def taking pictures of to show how we set it up ;-) Things are falling into place and cant wait to get back to the track! On a fun note, my good friend Dave who holds the Evo stock longblock/turbo record going 10.51 @ 127mph last year stopped by TPG Tuning and snapped a pretty nice photo of his evo, my sti, and a customers sti that made me smile while I was sitting in class Here is a link to Dave's record setting run: |

ENGINE UPDATE!
Dividing into 2 sections: Block & Heads SHORTBLOCK UPDATE: Well to start things off, this has been a huge learning experience for myself and there has been a lot of work done to make sure we can make the power this setup is capable of and hopefully someone can take something away from my experiences through this very involved build :-) On to the info!!! As those of you that have followed the build thread so far, the engine experienced a failure that involved one of the intake camshafts grinding through a bucket which then broke a valve stem and locked the valve in the open position loosing compression... After finding this out seeing the metal pieces throughout the engine, we decided to tear down the shortblock as well to make sure nothing got damaged and be cleaned... After tearing it apart we found a few problems with the block: 1. The block mains were stretched out .005" 2. The connecting rod bushing were extruding from the rod 3. The wrist pins were slightly bent The use of the OEM case bolts caused the case to stretch and try to separate but probably the most interesting things were the bushings being pushed out of the rods and the bent wrist pins but I guess the head failure was somewhat of a blessing because we were able to fix the problems before something more serious would happen Another thing that I became aware of was that I am in-fact using a 704 casing but bcz of time I had the block build, I was almost positive that I was using a 703 casing but thankfully after almost 8k miles on this block, the stock sleeves look brand new with no signs of abnormal wearing or cracks through the inspection, testing and reassembly process that I will cover next! After finding this out, we took the following steps: 1. Machined the block halves and line main hone with upgraded ARP case bolts 2. Install new main bearings w/ clearances ranging between .0026 & .0028' 3. Install new rod bearings w/ clearances ranging between .0023 & .0024" 4. Honed connecting rods & installed new "classified" high quality bronze connecting rod bushings 5. Installed new CP piston ring set 6. Installed upgraded CP "Tool Steel" wrist pins(These are not the same type of wrist pins that came with my pistons) 7. Fresh cylinder hone using torque plate and ARP L19 head studs 8. Fully balanced rotating assembly Now this all of these issues addressed the shortblock is ready to be installed and attached to the heads which I will put an update about shortly!!! ENGINE UPDATE!
HEADS UPDATE: Alright, on to the heads... As I stated previously in other posts, the setup I was previously running has been changed greatly after an intake camshaft lobe from my Kelford 220-C was ground down and made its way through my bucket, broke off the valve stem, put a small crack in the head and sent metal everywhere which was amazing to see when disassembling the longblock I guess the worst part of this failure is that we can not clearly determine the cause of the failure but oh well and time to rebuild!!! Changes/Settings: Installed Ferrea "Drag Racing" dual valve springs, seat locators, titanium retainers, lockers and seals Installed Ferrea Competition Plus 1mm+ intake & exhaust valves Installed new valve seats Installed/clearanced Kelford 220-D camshafts(min. clearance .0060") Stick-welded the crack inside of the heads Roughen up intake ports to fix very slight fuel puddling for better atomization Super-Flow flow bench tested= 340CFM Valve spring seat pressure= 90lbs Valve spring open pressure= 315lbs Net valve lift: Intake= 11.55mm Exhaust= 11.00mm Coming Together Nicely!!! Tight Clearances FTW! Awesome Intake Port Work New Valve Seats! Exhaust Port-n-Polish Crack Repaired With Stick-Weld Last edited by baseballdbk1; 11-01-2012 at 10:00 PM. |

No actual numbers given of when to upgrade wristpins and quite honestly, we probably would have been fine getting a new set of the same material but CP had a tool-steel material so we decided to be safe and go with those |

Those aren't copper-beryllium seats and they don't appear new? Your guides are also not new?

I accidentally misunderstood him when I pick up the engine from the machine shop. He was talking about a set of heads previously done with the copper-beryllium but I don't know why I thought he was talking about mine? I was running on about 2 hours of sleep that day so that may have something to do with it lol Last edited by baseballdbk1; 11-01-2012 at 05:09 PM. |
