the door, prior to getting covered in Overkill... You can see what I was talking about..

If the holes had been larger, I would have definitely covered over them with something first.. (yes, there was a lot of bruses and cuts involved..lol)

This gap here, I actually sealed up, just before I put the door panels on here last week, with Nashua Aluminum duck tape.. (like shown in the last pic, it's actually aluminum.. not that cloth crap.. stays forever..)

EDIT: Doors are officially SEALED...

A little clay added to make sure the spacers are sealed to the door... I didn't do it completely, I'm concerned it's going to melt.. lol..

I'm trying to get my hands around what plastic pieces I can cut off the door cards to stop them from contacting the mids...can you or anybody show a picture?

Freakin' rattles frustrate the hell out of me....ha ha ha!

They are "ribs" on the back side in the general area of the speaker.. like reinforcement.. I took a belt sander to mine.. lol..

Note: Extended door pins installed and a bunch of old "peel-n-seal" from years ago..

You can also see the markings from me trying to "relieve" the door card around the speaker with a heat gun and a large coffee can (sitting on the floor in the pic actually.. lol..)

Thanks man...isn't that peel-n-seal used for roofing?

Yeah these damned door cards are annoying as all hell.

Ok so I read through the thread and didn't see it mentioned. How does it sound now? How far would you need to go to make a 06 STI sound more like, oh, a 06 BMW 3-series? I love the speed of the car but my wife *hates* the road and wind noise. I'm mainly concerned with killing as much road and wind noise as possible.

BTW, I weight 120lbs, so as long as we stay under 80 or so pounds of material then I still got 80% of the folks beat on curb weight

AFA the sound, it sounds great.. When I first got the car, it was completely stripped, even the factory sound deadener had been removed...

It WAS hard to scream to have a conversation while at highway speed...

NOW, you can talk, normally, at highway speed.. And it's only going to get better as I recover my door panels with SS Overkill and fabric..

I've never been in a 06' 3 series, so I have nothing to compare to... ?

the 06 3 series, at highway speeds was pretty near silent. Since I drive a Honda Civic (2000) and the 2006 STI it was one of those "Are you serious!?" moments.

About 5 minutes after leaving the dealer I'm wondering what a 335xi would be like instead of the STI. So instead I figured I'd find out how close you can get with sound deadening

this is a nice job on deadening. I did something similar on my old Scion tC which I sold off about 3 years ago. I just haven't got around to doing any deadening on the WRX yet. Maybe one day.

hey aaron, can you post up a link to the place that gave you that you get your stuff from. im looking to seal up my trunk and doors. i figured since ive dropped 160 lbs off the car i can manage adding 60lbs of deadener. i figure for any weight i add, i can just ditch a passenger. as long as my girl doesnt have any passengers anytime soon i think it will work out.

Most of it is Second Skin products with a bulk pack of Cascade vMax and some RAAMat BXT thrown in as well...

How are you liking the weight to your doors? I did a ton of sound proofing to my doors and I was afraid if I went overboard the doors would be to hard to close right.

No, none, cars in cold storage till early spring, when it gets up over 20* so I can actually heat the garage and work (was supposed to installing a furnace, unemployment put the kibash on that.)

Good deal man, you should like it.. start near the speakers areas and work out from there..

I personally LOVE the weight.. lol.. it's like swinging the door on a 88' caddy... lol.. I don't DD the car, so i'm not too concerned about the hinges... but over time, the doors WILL sag to a point..

Quote:

Well, it's hard to quantify, with the 3" TBE and all, it's still loud, but put it this way, when I got it, you had to scream to talk doing 70 on the highway... now you can talk rather normal, with the windows down at 70..

The improvement has been nothing short of amazing, but my car is not quiet in general... so it's a catch 22..

Thanks for the interest guys... more to come, it'll just be a little while..

I just want to say thanks for this writeup and all of the pictures. I had a load of Raammat to install this weekend and the information here was invaluable.

I could do that, but then nobody else would benefit from any of the info.. I like to keep it all out where people can see it.. So post it up... !!

6by9's.... Naw dude.. I think what you are seeing are the holes left by the rear speaker filler plates... I believe that you "could" get a 5x7 in there, with the fillers removed.. But they fit a thin 6.5 easily enough...

No rear speakers at all for me in fact..
