Post Quick question RE: Intake Silencer Removal

THe instructions posted in the mods section..
Is that for all MY's?? I remember reading once that for MY 00-01, the location of the silencer was different from previous MY's.

Thanks

Dave

For 00 and 01, the silencer you're probably looking for is in the engine compartment, below the intake tubing and just aft of the ABS controller. That what you're looking for?

Ross:
I think so....I am very inept when it comes to anything mechnical, especially auto related. Yet I have an engineering degree...go figure...

Anyways, for anybody that did this mod on MY01, help please.

From what I have read, the gains, if any are minimal. But it makes the engine sound more agressive at WOT.
I just feel like doing something to my car. The only "mod" I have done was to put in PIAA super plasmas.
I'm just looking to perform some cheap mods that I may be able to perform myself.

I just ordered the Cobb intake a few days ago. Can't wait....

Cool

This was one of my first mods. Real cool sound, at least better than stock.

The silencer is not in the fender like MY99 and back (not sure how far back). It's located just after the beginning of the intake starting behind the headlight and above the ABS controller. It's the big box-type can just behind the ABS. Undo the bolt holding the beginning of the intake, the one holding down the silencer, and the one on the part of the pipe pointing towards the engine before it snakes back left into the main air box. You should now be able to pull it up pretty good due to the flexible tubing near the engine. When high enough, just pull the silencer off, you may have to use some force, a little twisting. It will leave an open hole which could allow more engine heat in, but I didn't notice any loss, *maybe* a slight gain just in revs. You could block it off I guess. Cool sound, nothing like a real upgraded intake, but worth the trouble. I reset ECU, don't know if it was needed. Figured any change to the "normal" breathing made it necessary.

Sube-Raw:
Thanks. Appreciate the response. Couple more questions:

I have ordered a Cobb intake. Will the silencer removal affect the intake installation in any way?

The "hole" you mentioned. Is it OK to leave it open? Will there be any potential problems with water, dirt, etc getting in? If I were to block it off, what should I use?

Thanks

The whole is goes into the cold air box so do not block it off! If you are worried about the hot air factor remove the vent shield on the passenger side(three nuts and two clips I believe) and this is just less stuff you will have to remove when you get your new intake.

I removed the silencer and the whole mess of the stock intake when I put on my Weapon R intake. The sound is much better. I Actually feel (sounds) like i'm in a rally car..just not the same speed...haha.
The factory intake is mainly set up that way for the everyday person who wants a super quiet car. A bunch of plastick junk if you ask me.

I forgot to mention K&N. If you're removing the silencer, the hole will allow more debris into the intake, especially with it pointed down towards the engine. K&N is definitely worth it.

As far as installing the COBB and this mod making it any different. If anything, this mod will make it easier to install the COBB, less stuff to move out. Also, when you remove the silencer, make sure you put the bolt back in that was holding the silencer down, it also holds down a support bracket for the ABS controller. Doesn't matter that there is a spacer on the top end of the bolt, just tighten it down and you're OK.

I have the snorkusectomy instructions with pics up on my site.

I love it, it really helped with my hesitation problems and the sound is very nice.

It was free too.
