Default 2.2l legacy engine and 2.5l RS engine

Someone told me that the heads are the same????

Is this true???

The heads I am looking at are from a 91 legacy and I can get a good deal on them but I need to know if they are the same.I plan on getting them all redone but dont want to buy them if they dont work.

They are most certainly different . However, what you probably heard is that the 2.2 heads will fit on a 2.5 block and vice versa, which is indeed true.

Also,

heads for the 2.2L (depending on year and vehicle application) are different for the manual transmissions compared to the automatics. Just something to consider. Not sure if this applies to the 2.5 heads as well.

For a performance engine build,Would it be a good idea to get the 2.2 heads to polish, port and blah blah blah or would I be making a bad decision?

Go DOHC 2.5 if you are going N/A. You start with 30 more hp before the build. You are on th right track though.

How do you figure 30 more HP using the 2.5 DOHC heads? The 2nd gen or 2.5 SOHC engine had more horsepower and torque, not much but more.

I am talking about using the whole engine. It is actually more than 30hp. early 90s 2.2 has 132 hp, 97-99 DOHC 2.5 has 165hp.

One question: would the head (2.2 or 2.5) fit on a EJ-18? I heard the block is exactly the same but its displacement was increased.

All of the Subaru EJ series engines are basically the same block just different bore and stroke.

Question

Ok. But would there be any heads which would fit and improve the output of the engine? If so, what are the pros and cons of such a swap?
